Exploring the Enchanting Medieval Town of Orvieto with My Husband
Day 7: Unearthing Orvieto's Hidden Gems: Etruscan Echoes and Medieval Charms
Exploring Orvieto's ancient ruins, artistic treasures, and local crafts with my husband, Hans. A day of history, culture, and culinary delights.
Echoes of the Etruscans & Medieval Splendor
Today was a day of delving deep into Orvieto's past, exploring its hidden corners, and soaking in the atmosphere of this enchanting medieval town. Hans and I set out with a sense of adventure, ready to uncover the stories etched into the stones and streets of Orvieto. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the thrill of discovery, the beauty of history, and the simple joy of sharing it all with my beloved Hans.
Our day began, as most do, with a delightful breakfast at Al pozzo etrusco di Fabrizio Grilli. The aroma of freshly baked focaccia and strong Italian coffee filled the air, setting the perfect tone for our explorations. I savored the simplicity of the Italian breakfast, a far cry from the hearty Ukrainian meals of my childhood, but equally satisfying in its own way. Hans enjoyed a cappuccino, remarking on the rich flavor of the coffee beans. It's these small moments, sharing a simple meal, that make our travels so special.

Fueled and ready, our first stop was the Ruins of the Etrurian Temple of Belvedere. Perched on a cliffside with panoramic views of the Umbrian countryside, the site was breathtaking. As we walked through the remnants of the ancient temple, I tried to imagine what life must have been like here centuries ago. The temple, likely dedicated to Tinia, the Etruscan equivalent of Zeus, offered a glimpse into the spiritual practices of this ancient civilization. Though little remains of the original structure, the peaceful setting and stunning surroundings made the visit truly worthwhile.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners of history.
From the temple ruins, we made our way to Palazzo Carvajal. This 16th-century palace, commissioned by Cardinal Bernardino Lopez de Carvajal, is a fascinating blend of Gothic and Renaissance elements. As we approached, I was struck by the building's imposing facade and the intricate details of its architecture. According to a Spanish inscription, Carvajal des Carvajal built the palace for the convenience of his friends. Stepping into the courtyard, we were greeted by a magnificent panoramic view of the Orvieto valley. The palace, now known as Palazzo del Cardinale, even offers B&B accommodation. It’s amazing to think of the stories these walls could tell, the lives that have passed through these rooms over the centuries.

Next on our list was the Museo dei Portici. Nestled in Piazza del Plebiscito, this museum is a treasure trove of local art and history. As we wandered through the exhibits, I was struck by the diversity of artistic styles and the stories behind each piece. The museum not only features local artists but also hosts works from renowned masters, offering a diverse perspective on art. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the cultural evolution of the region. I was particularly drawn to the ceramics, a craft that has deep roots in Ukrainian culture as well. The friendly staff were eager to share insights about the collections, enhancing our visit.

After immersing ourselves in art and history, it was time for a bit of retail therapy. We strolled over to Patris Orvieto, a charming shop specializing in olive wood crafts. The scent of wood filled the air as we stepped inside, and I was immediately drawn to the beautifully crafted kitchenware and decorative items. The store is known for its olive wood items, inlays, and lamps. According to the inscription on the building, Patris is one of the oldest and more characteristic shops in Orvieto. Run today by Patrice's son Ian, the store continues the tradition of craftsmanship. I ended up purchasing a small wooden bowl, its unique grain a reminder of the beautiful olive trees that dot the Umbrian landscape. Hans bought a handcrafted lamp for our living room in Leipzig; it will remind us of our trip every time we turn it on.

Lunch was at Vis à Vis, Orvieto, a restaurant that came highly recommended. Specializing in Italian and vegetarian cuisines, it was a delightful culinary experience. We shared a variety of dishes, from pasta to risotto to antipasto, each bursting with flavor. The service was terrific, and the ambiance was quiet and charming. I was particularly impressed to learn that the restaurant is now fully vegan, a testament to their commitment to ethical and sustainable dining. It’s wonderful to see businesses embracing such values. The owner realized how cruel dairy is and switched to being completely vegan.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Ristorante L'antica Rupe for dinner. Tucked away in a charming alley, this restaurant offered a cozy and intimate atmosphere. We started with the monkfish and speck, followed by panna cotta and tiramisu for dessert. The food was delicious, and the service was impeccable. The restaurant is known for its fair prices and fancy decor, making it a popular choice among locals and tourists alike. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration.

Reflecting on our experiences, I am struck by the layers of history and culture that permeate Orvieto. From the ancient Etruscans to the medieval artisans, this town has been shaped by countless generations. Each street, each building, each artifact tells a story, inviting us to connect with the past in a meaningful way. As we walked back to the Grand Hotel Italia, hand in hand, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such beauty and history with my husband [TravelAccommodationID].

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Lake Bolsena and visit Palazzo Coelli and Sasso Tagliato. I am looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery, soaking in the beauty of this remarkable region. And perhaps, we'll find a cozy bar like Blue Bar to relax in the evening. Until then, I will cherish the memories of today, the echoes of the Etruscans, and the medieval charm of Orvieto.
I am also intrigued by the Orvieto Leadership Summit that is scheduled to take place in Orvieto in June 2025. It combines music, art, science, and decision-making to foster a unique environment for thought leaders and creative individuals. Perhaps, I will attend it next year.
