First Day on the Trail: Vorokhta and the Call of Hoverla

The journey has begun! After months of planning and dreaming, I've finally arrived in the heart of the Ukrainian Carpathians, ready to tackle Hoverla, the country's highest peak. The air is crisp and clean, filled with the scent of pine and damp earth. It's a world away from my quiet life in Leipzig, and I couldn't be happier. Today was all about getting here, settling in, and soaking up the atmosphere of Vorokhta, the charming village that will be my base for the next few days.

The journey itself was quite the adventure. My flight from Leipzig to Kyiv was smooth enough, but the train ride to the Carpathian region was an experience in itself. The rhythmic clatter of the wheels on the tracks, the ever-changing scenery of rolling fields and dense forests, and the friendly faces of my fellow passengers made the hours fly by. From the train station, I hopped on a local bus that wound its way through the mountains, each turn revealing a more breathtaking view than the last. The landscape here is simply stunning, and I feel a deep connection to this land, a pull that reminds me of my childhood in Khmelnytskyi.

My first stop was Stara Vorokhta for a hearty breakfast. I wanted to fuel up for the day ahead. The restaurant was cozy, and the aroma of traditional Ukrainian dishes filled the air. I ordered deruny (potato pancakes) with mushrooms and sour cream, a classic that never fails to satisfy. It tasted like home, like babushka's cooking, and it warmed me from the inside out. The staff were incredibly welcoming, sharing stories about the area and offering tips for my hike. It's these small interactions that make traveling so special; it's a reminder that no matter where you go, people are generally kind and eager to connect.

With a full stomach and a sense of excitement, I set out to explore Vorokhta. The village is quaint and charming, with traditional wooden houses lining the streets and locals going about their daily lives. I visited Suvenirnyy Mahazyn Vorokhta, a local souvenir shop, where I picked up a few small mementos of my trip. I found a beautiful hand-embroidered vyshyvanka (traditional Ukrainian shirt) with intricate floral patterns, a perfect reminder of my heritage. I also bought a small wooden carving of a Carpathian bear, a symbol of the region's wild beauty. Supporting local artisans is important to me; it's a way to give back to the community and preserve traditional crafts.

Lunch was at Vysokyy Pereval, a restaurant known for its stunning mountain views. And it certainly lived up to its reputation! The restaurant is perched on a hilltop, offering panoramic vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. I savored a bowl of banosh, a traditional Hutsul dish made from cornmeal, sour cream, and bacon. It was rich, creamy, and incredibly satisfying, the perfect fuel for an afternoon of exploring. While enjoying my meal, I couldn't help but reflect on how fortunate I am to be here, experiencing the beauty and culture of my homeland.

After lunch, I ventured into the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve Chornohirskyi Reserve Massif. The reserve is a haven for biodiversity, home to a wide variety of plant and animal species. I hiked along one of the many trails, immersing myself in the tranquility of the forest. The air was filled with the sound of birdsong, and the sunlight filtered through the trees, creating a magical atmosphere. I felt a sense of peace and connection to nature that I rarely experience in the city. It was a reminder of the importance of preserving these natural spaces for future generations.

As evening approached, I made my way to Kolyba-Muzey for dinner. This restaurant is not just a place to eat; it's a cultural experience. The kolyba (traditional shepherd's hut) is decorated with antique tools, traditional costumes, and other artifacts, giving visitors a glimpse into the region's rich history. I indulged in a hearty plate of homemade sausages, served with sauerkraut and mustard. The sausages were flavorful and juicy, and the sauerkraut added a tangy contrast. The atmosphere was lively, with traditional Ukrainian music playing in the background.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a stroll through Vorokhta, soaking up the evening atmosphere. The village was quiet and peaceful, with the stars shining brightly overhead. I couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for this opportunity to reconnect with my roots and explore the beauty of the Carpathians. It's a journey I've been dreaming of for years, and it's finally coming true.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Hoverlyanske Falls and Zhenets’kyy Huk waterfall. I'm also hoping to stop by the Woodstork Bar for a drink in the evening. But for now, it's time to rest and prepare for another day of adventure. I know the climb will be challenging, but I'm ready to embrace whatever comes my way. After all, that's what life is all about: taking risks, exploring new horizons, and discovering the beauty that lies within ourselves and the world around us.

The mountains are calling, and I must answer. Goodnight from Vorokhta!

P.S. I almost forgot my portable charger and raincoat! Thankfully, I realized it before leaving Leipzig. It would have been a disaster to be stuck without power or protection from the rain in the mountains!

P.P.S. I saw a sign for guided tours to Hoverla and other Carpathian attractions. It might be a good option for those who prefer a structured and informative experience. But I'm happy with my solo adventure for now!
