Discover Parma's artistic treasures at the Farnese Theater and Camera di San Paolo, followed by local flavors at traditional restaurants.
Echoes of the Past in Parma's Artistic Heart
Today, Élodie and I delved deeper into the cultural heart of Parma, exploring architectural marvels and savoring the local cuisine. It was a day of historical immersion, artistic appreciation, and, of course, culinary indulgence. As a software developer with a penchant for history, I always find it fascinating to see how technology and art intersect, and Parma certainly didn't disappoint.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante Sapori del Mondo. While the name suggests a global culinary journey, I opted for a classic Italian breakfast: a cappuccino and a freshly baked cornetto. Élodie, ever the pastry chef, couldn't resist trying a few of their miniature pastries, each a tiny work of art. Fuelled up, we set off to explore the wonders Parma had in store for us.
First on our itinerary was the magnificent Farnese Theater. Stepping inside felt like traveling back in time to the opulent court of the Farnese Dukes. The sheer scale of the theater is breathtaking. Originally built in the early 17th century by Giovanni Battista Aleotti, the theater was intended to celebrate the visit of Cosimo II de' Medici. Though Cosimo's visit was eventually cancelled, the theater was later inaugurated in 1628 for the wedding of Margherita de' Medici and Duke Odoardo Farnese. It was almost completely destroyed during World War II, but thankfully, it was rebuilt, allowing us to witness its grandeur today. The wooden structure, with its deep-perspective scenery, truly captures the essence of Baroque architecture. As I stood there, I imagined the lavish performances that once graced its stage, the echoes of music and drama resonating through the hall.

Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
Next, we visited the Camera di San Paolo e Cella di Santa Caterina, a hidden gem within the former Monastery of San Paolo. The Camera di San Paolo, also known as the Abbess' Chamber, is adorned with frescoes by Correggio, commissioned by Abbess Giovanna Piacenza in the early 16th century. The frescoes are a stunning example of illusionistic painting, transforming the chamber into a whimsical pergola opening to the sky. Élodie, with her keen eye for detail, was particularly fascinated by the intricate details and mythological figures. The frescoes, completed around 1520, marked Correggio's first major commission in Parma and significantly influenced Renaissance painting.

It's incredible to think that for centuries, this chamber remained relatively unknown due to enclosure rules imposed on the convent. Rediscovered in the 18th century, it now stands as a testament to the artistic innovation of the Renaissance. The adjacent Cella di Santa Caterina offered a serene contrast with its more austere, yet equally captivating, religious art.
For lunch, we ventured to Osteria Rangon, a traditional osteria known for its authentic Parmigiano cuisine. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with locals and tourists alike enjoying the simple yet delicious fare. I opted for the tortelli d'erbetta, a classic Parma dish consisting of pasta filled with ricotta and herbs. Élodie chose the cappelletti al brodo, small stuffed pasta served in a flavorful broth. The meal was a true taste of Parma, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. We shared a bottle of local Lambrusco, its slight fizz and fruity notes perfectly complementing our meal. The Osteria Rangon is known for its excellent cocktails and informal environment, which makes it perfect for a relaxed lunch.

After lunch, we visited the Pinacoteca Stuard, an art gallery housed in a wing of the ancient Benedictine monastery of St. Paolo. The collection, assembled by Giuseppe Stuard, showcases a diverse range of artworks from the 14th to the 20th centuries. As we wandered through the 22 rooms, we admired paintings, sculptures, and archaeological finds, each telling a story of Parma's rich cultural history. I was particularly drawn to a drawing depicting a greyhound, attributed to Parmigianino, now the symbol of the art gallery. Élodie was captivated by the paintings from the 19th-century artists linked to the Academy of Fine Arts in Parma, such as Enrico Bandini and Giovan Battista Borghesi.

In the late afternoon, we indulged in a bit of retail therapy at ParmaShop. I picked up a few souvenirs for our friends back in Montreal, while Élodie found some exquisite balsamic vinegar to add to her culinary collection. It's always a pleasure to bring a piece of our travels back home, a tangible reminder of the experiences we've shared.

As evening approached, we decided to unwind at Tapas Pub Parma. While tapas might seem out of place in Parma, it was a delightful change of pace. For dinner, we had reservations at Sorelle Picchi, a restaurant renowned for its traditional Parmigiano cuisine. The restaurant's menu is rooted in the gastronomic traditions of the region, using carefully selected local ingredients. I chose the osso buco di vitello ai funghi porcini di Borgo Taro, a veal shank braised with porcini mushrooms. Élodie opted for the filetto di suino nero di Parma con fonduta di parmigiano e scalogno croccante, a black pork fillet with Parmesan fondue and crispy shallots. Each dish was a masterpiece, a testament to the culinary artistry of Parma. We ended our meal with a classic tiramisu and a glass of Vin Santo, a sweet dessert wine.
