Day 4: Riding the Waves and Exploring the Port of Essaouira
An exhilarating day of kitesurfing followed by a visit to the bustling port, discovering Essaouira's vibrant coastal life and culinary delights.
Essaouira's Coastal Charms
Today was a perfect blend of adventure and cultural immersion in Essaouira. From the thrill of riding the waves to the vibrant atmosphere of the port, every moment was filled with the unique energy of this coastal town. I'm continually captivated by the way Essaouira balances its rich history with its modern, adventurous spirit.
The day began with an early breakfast at Restaurant Nomade. Located in a small alley in the medina, this restaurant offered revisited Moroccan cuisine. The rooftop terrace, sheltered from the wind, provided a pleasant setting for the meal. I enjoyed roasted monkfish with saffron sauce, reminiscing about Élodie's amazing seafood dishes back in Montreal. It's always a pleasure to discover new culinary twists on classic dishes, and this place definitely delivered.

After breakfast, I headed to Explora Watersports to try my hand at kitesurfing. Essaouira is known as the Wind City of Africa, and for good reason. The consistent trade winds make it an ideal spot for kitesurfing, attracting enthusiasts from around the world. Although I've dabbled in surfing before, kitesurfing was a completely new experience. The team at Explora Watersports were fantastic, providing clear instructions and ensuring I felt safe and confident.

It took a few attempts to get the hang of controlling the kite, but once I did, the feeling of gliding across the water was exhilarating. The wind was strong, and the waves were gentle, making it perfect for a beginner like me. I spent a couple of hours practicing, laughing as I tumbled into the water and celebrating each small victory. By the end of the session, I managed to stay upright for a few brief moments, feeling the full force of the wind propelling me forward. It was an incredible rush, and I can definitely see why people get hooked on this sport.

After the adrenaline-filled morning, I was ready for a hearty lunch. I chose Restaurant la clé de voûte, known for its authentic Moroccan dishes. The restaurant had a warm and welcoming ambiance, with a charming and cozy interior. I opted for one of their seafood dishes and a Moroccan salad, enjoying the burst of flavors and spices. The staff was friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after an active morning.

In the afternoon, I decided to explore the Port de Essaouira. This bustling port is the heart of the city's fishing industry, and it was fascinating to watch the daily activities of the local fishermen. The air was filled with the sounds of seagulls, the smell of the ocean, and the lively chatter of the workers. I strolled along the docks, observing the colorful fishing boats and the fishermen unloading their catch. I learned that Essaouira has been an important port since ancient times, serving as a trading post for the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans. In the 18th and 19th centuries, it became Morocco's primary port, facilitating trade with Europe and beyond.

The port's history is palpable, with its ancient walls and fortifications still standing strong. I climbed the Skala du Port, a fortified sea bastion, to get a panoramic view of the harbor and the ocean. The views were breathtaking, and I could see the Îles Purpuraires in the distance. These islands have a rich history, once serving as a source of Tyrian purple dye for the Roman Empire.
As the sun began to set, I made my way to La Table by Madada for dinner. This restaurant is known for its seafood-focused Moroccan and French cuisine, and it came highly recommended. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with elegant decor and live guitar music. I started with the spider crab gratin, followed by the sea bass in salt. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The service was impeccable, and the overall experience was unforgettable.

After dinner, I decided to experience a bit of Essaouira's nightlife. I ventured to Unknown But Cheap, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists, all enjoying the music and the relaxed vibe. I ordered a local beer and chatted with some of the patrons, learning more about Essaouira's culture and traditions. It was a great way to end the day, immersing myself in the local scene and enjoying the camaraderie of the crowd. Essaouira's nightlife is more laid-back than wild, with a focus on enjoying good company and local vibes.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, I'm excited to explore the Gallery Kasbah and Dar Souiri. I plan to immerse myself in the local art scene and learn more about Essaouira's cultural heritage. I'll also be trying out Chez Zak for breakfast, Le Love by Caravane for lunch, and Restaurant d'Orient et d'Ailleurs for dinner, continuing my culinary exploration of this amazing town. And of course, I'll be sure to stop by Artisan Craft Atelier to pick up some unique souvenirs for Élodie and myself.
Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. The combination of adventure, culture, and culinary delights is what makes each destination unique and memorable. Essaouira has truly captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
