A Day of Awe and Adventure
Today was a day of contrasts, a perfect blend of natural beauty and local flavor. From the awe-inspiring heights of Cascada Basaseachi to the lively atmosphere of Bar Geronimo, Copper Canyon continues to surprise and delight. It's these kinds of days that remind me why I love to travel, to experience the world in all its varied glory.
Our day began, as it has every day here, with breakfast at Restaurante El Barranco. Élodie and I have grown quite fond of this place. The familiar faces of the staff and the comforting aroma of Mexican coffee have made it feel like a home away from home. After a hearty breakfast of huevos rancheros, we set off to see Cascada Basaseachi. I must admit, after seeing so many incredible vistas in Copper Canyon, I was curious to see how this waterfall would measure up. I had read about it being the second-highest waterfall in Mexico, and I was eager to witness its grandeur firsthand.

The drive to the falls was an adventure in itself. The landscape transformed as we ascended, with the air growing crisper and the views becoming ever more panoramic. The changing scenery reminded me of drives through the Laurentian Mountains back in Quebec, although the flora here is distinctly different. The desert landscape slowly transitioned to pine forests, a welcome change of scenery. I couldn’t help but think of Élodie, who would have loved to see the unique plants and birds along the way. I made a mental note to bring her back someday.
Finally, we arrived at Cascada Basaseachi. The sight that greeted us was nothing short of breathtaking. The water plunged down the cliff face with incredible force, creating a misty spray that kissed our faces as we approached. The sheer height of the falls, 246 meters, was astounding. I spent a good hour simply taking it all in, snapping photos from every conceivable angle. I tried to capture the scale of the falls, the way the water seemed to defy gravity as it cascaded down the rock face. It was a challenge, to say the least, but I think I managed to get a few shots that do it justice.
The park surrounding the falls was beautiful, with well-maintained trails that offered different perspectives of the cascade. We hiked down to a viewpoint closer to the base, the sound of the water growing louder with each step. The air was thick with mist, and the ground was damp beneath our feet. It felt like stepping into another world, a hidden oasis of cool, fresh air and vibrant green foliage.
Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.
After spending the better part of the day exploring the falls and its surroundings, we headed back to town. The sun was beginning to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows across the landscape. We decided to grab dinner again at Restaurante El Barranco. After a long day of hiking and sightseeing, we were both ravenous. We indulged in some local specialties, savoring the flavors of the region. The warm, hearty meal was the perfect end to a perfect day.

But the day wasn't over yet. As the evening wore on, we decided to check out Bar Geronimo. I had heard good things about it from some locals, and I was curious to see what the nightlife was like in Copper Canyon. It turned out to be a great decision. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with music playing and people laughing and talking. The décor was rustic and charming, with wooden beams and exposed brick walls. It felt like a place where locals and travelers alike could come together and enjoy a good time.

I ordered a local craft beer, while my friend opted for a margarita. We struck up a conversation with a couple of locals, who shared some interesting stories about the area. They told us about the history of Copper Canyon, the traditions of the Tarahumara people, and some of the best-kept secrets of the region. It was fascinating to hear their perspectives, to learn about the area through their eyes. It made me realize how much more there is to discover here, how much more I want to explore.
As the night wore on, the bar became more crowded, the music louder. We danced, we laughed, we made new friends. It was exactly the kind of experience I was hoping for, a chance to let loose and enjoy the moment. The atmosphere at Bar Geronimo was electric, a perfect way to end a day filled with natural beauty and cultural immersion. The bar seemed to honor the culture and cuisine of the Southwest.
Tomorrow marks the end of our Copper Canyon adventure. We plan to have breakfast at Restaurante El Barranco, a familiar and comforting start to the day. Then we’ll visit Tienda Comunitaria ONORUAME, a local shop where we can pick up some souvenirs and support the community. It's a fitting way to end our trip, by giving back to the people who have welcomed us with open arms.
As I sit here now, writing this blog post, I can't help but feel a sense of gratitude. This trip to Copper Canyon has been an incredible experience, one that I will cherish for years to come. From the breathtaking landscapes to the warm and welcoming people, this region has captured my heart in a way that few places have. I’m already looking forward to my next adventure, wherever it may lead.
I’m also grateful that I didn’t forget my camera for this trip, unlike that one time in the Laurentian Mountains. I would have been kicking myself if I couldn’t capture the stunning views of Cascada Basaseachi!
Until tomorrow,
Thomas.
