Exploring the Coastal Charms of Essaouira
Day 6: Coastal Rhythms: Horseback Riding and Sunset Serenity in Essaouira
Discover Essaouira's charm with a horseback ride at Ranch de Diabat and unwind at Sidi Kaouki Beach. A day of sun, sand, and sea.
Riding the Winds of Essaouira
Today was all about embracing the natural beauty surrounding Essaouira. From the gentle sway of a horse to the rhythmic crashing of waves, it was a day that resonated with the simple joys of life. As an urban beekeeper, I find solace in these natural escapes, a reminder of the world beyond the city rooftops.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Restaurant Berber. It's a small, family-run place tucked away in the Medina, and it felt like stepping into someone's home. The Berber omelette was fantastic, setting me up perfectly for the day ahead. It's these authentic, local experiences that really make a trip special, and it reminded me of the importance of supporting small businesses that are deeply rooted in their communities.

After breakfast, I met up with my friends for our adventure at Ranch de Diabat. As someone more accustomed to the quiet hum of beehives, mounting a horse felt like a step into the unknown, but the team at the ranch were incredibly supportive. The horses looked well cared for, and the guides were clearly passionate about what they do. We set off for a ride through the countryside, the landscape unfolding before us like a tapestry. February in Essaouira is mild, with clear skies, ideal for exploring. The air was crisp, and the sun warmed my face as we ambled along sandy trails, the scent of the ocean carried on the breeze. It was a far cry from the cold, damp air of Hamburg, and I soaked up every moment.

The rhythm of the horse, the vastness of the beach, and the warmth of the sun created a symphony of simple pleasures.
The ride took us along the coast, eventually leading to Sidi Kaouki Beach. The beach is expansive, wild, and beautiful, a perfect spot for those seeking tranquility. The February weather meant it wasn't exactly sunbathing weather. The water temperature hovers around 16-19°C (61-66°F), but the beach was relatively quiet, allowing for a peaceful experience. I took some time to simply walk along the shore, camera in hand, capturing the dramatic coastline and the surfers riding the waves. Sidi Kaouki is known for its consistent waves, making it a popular spot for surfers of all levels. I even considered taking a lesson myself, but perhaps that's an adventure for another day!

For lunch, we headed to Restaurant Nomade. Nestled in an alley in the medina, this restaurant offers a modern twist on Moroccan cuisine. I opted for the roasted monkfish with saffron sauce. The rooftop terrace provided a lovely setting, sheltered from the wind, and it was a great spot to relax and reflect on the day so far. The blend of traditional and modern elements in the decor was really appealing, mirroring the way Essaouira itself blends history and contemporary culture.

As the afternoon waned, we made our way back to Sidi Kaouki to witness the sunset. The sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors – oranges, pinks, and purples blending seamlessly as the sun dipped below the horizon. It was a truly magical moment, one that I shared with my friends, creating memories that will last a lifetime. We sat there, the sound of the waves providing a soothing soundtrack, and simply appreciated the beauty of nature.
For dinner, we chose Restaurant Le Sirocco. The restaurant has a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly welcoming. The menu is a blend of Moroccan and French cuisine, and I decided to try a traditional tagine. It was rich, flavorful, and comforting, the perfect way to end a day of exploration. We enjoyed some live music, which added to the relaxed and convivial atmosphere.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out Bloody Mary, a bar known for its lively atmosphere. Although I am usually not a fan of cocktails, I decided to have one. The bar was a mix of tourists and locals, all enjoying the music and the vibrant energy. It was a fun way to experience Essaouira's nightlife and soak up the local culture.

As I write this, back at Hotel Coté Océan Mogador, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow. We plan to explore the City Walls and Bab Marrakech Tower, delving deeper into Essaouira's rich history. Perhaps I'll even pick up a souvenir at Cooperative ARGAN HAHA. But for now, I'll drift off to sleep, dreaming of horses, beaches, and the captivating charm of Essaouira. The blend of nature, culture, and friendship has made this trip truly special.

I'm also grateful that I remembered to pack my sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes. However, I really wish I had remembered my portable phone charger and travel adapter! Note to self: always double-check the essentials!
It's amazing how travel can bring you closer to nature and to the people you're with. Being away from my urban beekeeping duties in Hamburg, even for a short time, provides a fresh perspective and renewed appreciation for the simple things.
