First Impressions of Essaouira: A Coastal Medina's Charm

After a long journey from Hamburg, a scenic drive from Marrakech, and a slightly stressful realization that I'd forgotten my portable phone charger, I finally arrived in Essaouira with my friends. The anticipation had been building for months, and stepping into this coastal city felt like entering a different world. Today was all about immersing ourselves in the heart of Essaouira, exploring its famed Medina of Essaouira.

The air was crisp, carrying a salty tang that hinted at the Atlantic just beyond the city walls. February in Essaouira is quite pleasant; the weather forecast predicted highs around 20°C (68°F), making it perfect for exploring without the intense heat I'm used to in other parts of the world. I was eager to see if Essaouira would live up to its reputation as the 'Wind City of Africa', and so far, the gentle breeze was a welcome change from Hamburg's winter chill. I was excited to start my 10-day adventure, and it felt great to finally get going!

Our first stop was, of course, the Medina of Essaouira, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Entering through one of the ancient gates felt like stepping back in time. The narrow, winding streets were a maze of vibrant colors, sounds, and smells. The architecture was a beautiful blend of Moroccan and European styles, a testament to the city's rich history as a trading port. As an urban beekeeper, I'm always drawn to the natural elements of a place. The cozy atmosphere and retro decor made it the perfect place to start our day. I particularly enjoyed the quirky interior design, with its mix of sixties and seventies furniture. It was a refreshing change from the traditional Moroccan cuisine I expected, blending European flavors with fresh, local ingredients.

After breakfast, we continued our exploration of the Medina, getting lost in its labyrinthine streets. We stumbled upon Koulchi Concept Store, a fascinating shop that combined retail with a rooftop café. I was particularly drawn to the artisan creations on display and the modern decor. The rooftop terrace provided a stunning view of the Medina, and we enjoyed a relaxing coffee break while soaking in the atmosphere. It was a great spot to take a break from shopping and enjoy the views.

Next on our list was the Port de Essaouira. The harbor has been a significant stopover for global commerce since the 7th century BC, with Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Portuguese all passing through. I was excited to see this prominent historical monument. The port was a hive of activity, with fishermen unloading their catch, boats bobbing in the water, and seagulls circling overhead. The smell of the sea was intoxicating, and I watched, fascinated, as the fishermen sorted their haul. I learned that Essaouira remains an important sardine fishing port today.

The restaurant’s fancy decor and pretty atmosphere made me feel relaxed and ready for the rest of the day’s adventures. The prices were attractive, and the service was cool, adding to the overall positive experience.

As the afternoon wore on, we continued to wander through the Medina, discovering hidden courtyards, artisan workshops, and bustling market squares. I opted for the beef tacos, which were a delightful fusion of Moroccan and international flavors. The live music added to the ambiance, making it a truly memorable dining experience. The restaurant is open from 11 AM to 1 AM, making it a perfect spot for both sunset views and late-night relaxation.

As the day drew to a close, we strolled along the beach, watching the sunset over the Atlantic. The sky was ablaze with color, and the sound of the waves was soothing. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this magical place.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Essaouira's historical sites, including the Sqala de La Kasbah, Gallery Kasbah, and Place du Marché aux Grains. I'm also looking forward to trying some new restaurants, such as O'Bleu Mogador for breakfast and Umia Restaurant for dinner. And, of course, I'll be keeping an eye out for more opportunities to connect with the local culture and environment. The gazelle d'Essaouira and Taros bar are also on the list for tomorrow!

Back at Hotel Coté Océan Mogador, I felt a sense of contentment. Despite the slight hiccup with my charger, the day had been a resounding success. Essaouira had captured my heart with its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring.

I’m also hoping to find a local market where I can purchase some fresh, local honey. As an urban beekeeper, I’m always interested in learning about different honey varieties and beekeeping practices.

I'm also looking forward to visiting some of the local artisan shops and perhaps purchasing a small souvenir to remind me of my trip. I'm particularly interested in the woodworking shops and the argan oil products.

Finally, I’m excited to simply wander through the streets of the Medina, soaking in the atmosphere and discovering hidden gems.
