Nature's Embrace: Rice Terraces and Waterfalls of Shikoku

Today was a day of immersing myself in the natural beauty of Shikoku, a welcome change after the more urban explorations of the past few days. I set out to discover the famed Yoshinobu Rice Terraces and the Amegaeri Waterfall, hoping to capture the essence of rural Japan with my camera and experience the peace that nature so readily offers. The day promised a blend of stunning landscapes and quiet contemplation, and it certainly delivered.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Ombelico. It was a delightful start. The restaurant had a crisp and fragrant crust. I enjoyed a meal on the terrace. I savored every bite, knowing I needed the energy for the day's adventures. Fuelled up, I headed towards the Yoshinobu Rice Terraces.

The drive to the Yoshinobu Rice Terraces was an experience in itself. As I drove, the landscape transformed into rolling hills and verdant valleys, a patchwork of greens and browns stretching as far as the eye could see. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant wildflowers. It was a sensory feast that invigorated my soul and set the tone for the day.

Arriving at the terraces, I was immediately struck by their breathtaking beauty. The terraces cascaded down the mountainside, each level a mirror reflecting the sky above. The intricate patterns formed by the rice paddies were a testament to the hard work and dedication of the local farmers who have cultivated this land for generations. It was a scene straight out of a postcard, a perfect blend of nature and human craftsmanship.

I spent a good hour wandering through the terraces, camera in hand, trying to capture the essence of this stunning landscape. The play of light and shadow on the water created an ever-changing tableau, each angle offering a new perspective. I found myself lost in the moment, appreciating the simple beauty of the natural world and the harmony between man and nature.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of settings.

After soaking in the beauty of the rice terraces, my stomach reminded me it was lunchtime. I drove to Osusowake Shokudo Mado, a local eatery known for its commitment to reducing food waste and supporting the community. The concept of Osusowake, which means sharing and paying it forward, resonated deeply with me. It reminded me a bit of the sustainable practices I try to incorporate into my own life back in Hamburg, particularly with my urban beekeeping.

The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm, friendly atmosphere. It was a small, cozy place known for its commitment to reducing food waste and supporting the local community. The owner gets excess vegetables from local farmers and uses them to create delicious and affordable meals. I ordered a set lunch featuring local vegetables and grilled fish, and it was absolutely delicious. The flavors were fresh and vibrant, a testament to the quality of the locally sourced ingredients. It was a simple, wholesome, and incredibly tasty. I felt good knowing that I was supporting a business that valued sustainability and community engagement.

With my appetite satisfied, I set off towards my next destination: the Amegaeri Waterfall. The drive took me through winding mountain roads, the scenery growing increasingly dramatic with each turn. The forests were lush and dense, the air thick with the scent of pine and damp earth. It was a welcome change from the open landscapes of the rice terraces, a journey into the heart of Shikoku's wilderness.

Arriving at the waterfall, I was immediately captivated by its raw power and beauty. The water cascaded down from a great height, crashing into the rocks below with a thunderous roar. The spray created a fine mist that hung in the air, adding to the mystical atmosphere. The name Amegaeri, which translates to returning rain, hints at the falls' impressive height and the way the water seems to fall endlessly from the sky.

I followed a trail that led me closer to the base of the falls, feeling the cool mist on my skin and hearing the deafening roar of the water. The power of nature was palpable, a reminder of the forces that shape our world. I spent some time simply sitting on a nearby rock, watching the water plunge down and feeling the energy of the falls wash over me. It was a truly awe-inspiring experience.

According to local lore, the name Amegaeri Waterfall comes from the fact that salmon cannot climb it and turn back. It is located in Setogawa Valley. I took some photos of Amegaeri Waterfall,Autumn (Setogawa Valley, Tosa Town, Kochi Prefecture).

As the day drew to a close, I made my way back towards Kochi, feeling a sense of contentment and gratitude. I stopped for dinner at Munagin, a restaurant recommended for its Unagi (freshwater eel). This was a culinary experience I had been looking forward to, and it did not disappoint. The eel was grilled to perfection, with a delicate balance of sweet and savory flavors. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the service was impeccable.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Bar Salvador in Kochi. It was a cozy bar with a vibrant atmosphere and delightful drinks. I ordered a local beer and chatted with some of the locals, learning more about the city and its culture. The trendy decor and warm lighting created an intimate setting. It was a perfect way to wind down after a day of exploring.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I appreciated the opportunity to connect with nature and experience the tranquility of rural Japan. The Yoshinobu Rice Terraces and the Amegaeri Waterfall were both stunning in their own way, offering a glimpse into the beauty and power of the natural world. And the local food and warm hospitality made the experience even more memorable.

Tomorrow, I'm planning to explore the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge and Umpenji Temple, venturing deeper into the heart of Shikoku's remote landscapes. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at Plugs Market Kochi Store. I'm excited to see what adventures await me as I continue my journey through this enchanting island.
