Echoes of the Past in Iya Valley

Today was a journey deep into the heart of Shikoku, a day where ancient traditions and stunning natural beauty intertwined to create an unforgettable experience. It felt like stepping back in time, surrounded by the serene landscapes and the whispers of history.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Kohanyu. It was a delightful start, with traditional Japanese cuisine setting the tone for a day of cultural immersion. The cozy café atmosphere was perfect, and I savored every bite, knowing I'd need the energy for the adventures ahead.

After breakfast, I headed towards the Oku-Iya Double Vine Bridge, a place I had been eagerly anticipating. The drive itself was an experience, winding through narrow mountain roads with breathtaking views at every turn. When I finally arrived, the sight of the vine bridges was truly awe-inspiring. These bridges, made of wooden slats and twisted vines, spanned a rocky stream, offering a thrilling walk amidst the dramatic mountain scenery. It was easy to imagine the samurai of the Heike clan seeking refuge here centuries ago. I paid the 550 yen entrance fee and ventured onto the 'male' bridge, which stretches 42 meters long. The slight wobble with each step added an extra thrill, and the views of the crystal-clear water below were simply mesmerizing. I then crossed the 'female' bridge, slightly shorter but equally enchanting. The whole area exuded a sense of peace and tranquility, far removed from the hustle and bustle of city life. I spent a couple of hours exploring the area, taking photos, and simply soaking in the atmosphere.

The essence of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in connecting with the history and culture that shapes them.

Next up was Umpenji Temple, the 66th temple on the Shikoku pilgrimage route. The drive to the temple was another adventure, as it's located high in the mountains. I decided to take the ropeway, which offered stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. As I ascended, I could see the lush forests and distant mountains, feeling a sense of awe at the natural beauty of Shikoku. Upon reaching the temple, I was immediately struck by its serene atmosphere. The temple, with a history spanning 1,200 years, exuded a sense of timelessness. I explored the various halls and structures, each with its own unique charm and significance. The main hall houses a hidden statue of Senju Kannon Bosatsu (Thousand-armed Kannon), said to have been carved by Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism. The temple is known as Shikoku-bo, and it once served as a place of study and training for monks from all over Shikoku. I took my time wandering through the temple grounds, admiring the ancient cedar trees and the intricate details of the architecture. The air was filled with the scent of incense, adding to the sense of peace and contemplation.

For lunch, I stopped at Yuzuan Restaurant in Iya Valley. The restaurant offered authentic Japanese dishes made with local ingredients. I opted for a traditional set meal, which included a variety of small dishes, each bursting with flavor. It was a delightful culinary experience, and I enjoyed the chance to sample the local cuisine. The staff were friendly and welcoming, adding to the overall charm of the restaurant.

In the afternoon, I made a stop at Plugs Market Kochi Store. While I wasn't necessarily in the market for plugs, I was curious to see what the store had to offer. It turned out to be a fascinating glimpse into the local economy, with a wide array of electrical supplies and tools. I picked up a few small items as souvenirs, and then continued on my journey.

As the day drew to a close, I arrived at Restaurant Obokekyo Mannaka for dinner. The restaurant is located near the Oboke Gorge, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. I ordered a set meal featuring local specialties, including Awa beef and seasonal vegetables. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and adventure. The restaurant uses a unique machine ticket system for ordering, which I found quite interesting. You select your menu items by remembering the corresponding numbers, adding a touch of novelty to the dining experience.
