Ortisei and the Fassa Valley: A Day of Awe-Inspiring Vistas

Today was a symphony of sights and sounds, a perfect blend of charming towns and breathtaking landscapes. The Dolomites continue to amaze me, and I'm so grateful to be sharing this experience with my friends. From the delightful village of Ortisei to the majestic Fassa Valley, every moment was a feast for the senses.

Our day began in the enchanting village of Ortisei in Val Gardena. The crisp morning air was invigorating as we strolled through the pedestrian zone, admiring the traditional Ladin architecture. The village was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to explore the area. I couldn't resist snapping a few photos of the charming shops and cafes, their window boxes overflowing with colorful flowers. It's amazing how well the community integrates tourism and local life, making for a very authentic feel. I even picked up a small, hand-carved wooden figure of a mountain goat as a memento.

We started our day with a delightful breakfast at Antica Trattoria Al Volt. This traditional Trentino restaurant exuded a warm, inviting atmosphere, and the aroma of freshly baked bread and strong coffee filled the air. I savored every bite of my hearty breakfast, fueling up for the day's adventures. The restaurant, with its vaulted ceilings, felt like stepping back in time. It's these kinds of places that really make a trip memorable, offering not just food, but a taste of local culture. The owners, the Tomasi family, clearly pour their hearts into their work.

After breakfast, we decided to explore the hiking trails around Ortisei. With the summer sun shining, the mountains beckoned. We hopped on one of the cable cars that whisked us up to the soaring peaks surrounding Ortisei. As we ascended, the views became increasingly spectacular, revealing a panorama of jagged peaks, lush meadows, and quaint villages nestled in the valleys below. We chose a trail that wound its way through alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. The air was so fresh and clean, a welcome change from the city. The scent of pine filled our nostrils as we hiked along, the only sounds the gentle breeze and the occasional cowbell.

Sometimes, the most breathtaking views are the ones you stumble upon unexpectedly.

One of the highlights of our hike was discovering the Church of Saint Jacob, the oldest church in Val Gardena. The church was simple yet elegant, with beautiful frescoes adorning its exterior. The setting was so peaceful, surrounded by rolling hills and towering peaks. I took a moment to sit on a nearby bench, soaking in the tranquility and marveling at the beauty of the Dolomites. The church is located on the “Troi Paian,” a high-altitude trail that once connected Venice to South Tyrol. Standing there, I couldn't help but feel a connection to the past, imagining the countless travelers who had passed along this very path over the centuries.

After a satisfying morning of hiking, we hopped in our rental car and drove to the Fassa Valley. The drive itself was an adventure, as we navigated winding mountain roads that offered stunning views at every turn. The Fassa Valley is known for its dramatic scenery, and it certainly didn't disappoint. Towering peaks loomed over us as we drove along the valley floor, their jagged silhouettes piercing the sky. We stopped at several viewpoints along the way, each offering a unique perspective on the surrounding landscape.

For lunch, we stopped at Zum Löwen, a restaurant that came highly recommended. It was a cozy spot, filled with locals enjoying traditional dishes. I opted for a hearty plate of schnitzel with potatoes, a classic German dish that I always enjoy. My friends tried the local pasta, which they raved about. The portions were generous, and the prices were reasonable, making it a great value. It felt like stepping into someone's home, with the friendly staff and the comforting aroma of home-cooked food.

In the afternoon, we decided to explore the Sentiero panoramico San Romedio, a scenic trail that leads to the Sanctuary of San Romedio. The trail was well-maintained and easy to follow, winding its way through lush forests and offering stunning views of the surrounding valley. The highlight of the trail was undoubtedly the Sanctuary of San Romedio, a series of chapels built on a sheer cliff face. The architecture was incredible, and the setting was truly awe-inspiring. Legend has it that St. Romedius rode into town on a bear. The sanctuary is a testament to human ingenuity and faith, a place where people have come for centuries to find solace and inspiration.

The path to the sanctuary is carved into the rock, following the route of an old irrigation canal. As we walked along this path, suspended in mid-air, I couldn't help but marvel at the ingenuity of the people who had built it. The views were simply breathtaking, with the valley stretching out before us in all its glory. The canyon is 1.70 metres high in one small spot. The sanctuary itself consists of five buildings connected by 131 steps. The climb was a bit strenuous, but the views from the top were well worth the effort.

For dinner, we indulged in a delightful meal at Ristorante Tipico Al Dosarel. This charming restaurant is known for its traditional dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the service was exceptional. I savored every bite of my homemade pasta, which was cooked to perfection. The restaurant is located in a small village away from the stress of the city. The chef, Daria, is passionate about her work. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day in the Dolomites.

To cap off the evening, we found ourselves at Officina Gambrinus, a local bar known for its lively atmosphere. We enjoyed a few drinks and chatted with the friendly locals, soaking in the vibrant energy of the place. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring. The bar has a great pizza.
