A Final Day of Wonders

As my adventure in Trentino-Alto Adige draws to a close, I can't help but feel a bittersweet mix of emotions. This trip with friends has been nothing short of spectacular, filled with breathtaking landscapes and unforgettable experiences. Today, we set out to explore a unique canyon, reflect at a historical monument, and ascend to a terrace offering panoramic views of the Dolomites. It’s a fitting end to a journey that has rejuvenated my soul and deepened my appreciation for nature's wonders.

The day started with a hearty breakfast at Osteria Casa De Gentili in Sanzeno. Nestled in a charming corner, the osteria exuded a warm, inviting atmosphere. Sipping on a strong Italian coffee and enjoying some local cheese and bread, I felt ready to tackle the day's adventures. It was a bit of a drive to get there, but the cozy ambiance and promise of local flavors made it worthwhile.

Delving into the Depths of Canyon Rio Sass

Our first stop was the Canyon Rio Sass in Fondo. This natural wonder cuts right through the heart of the village, and exploring it felt like stepping into another world. The canyon has been shaped by water over millions of years. Since 2001, it has been accessible via a series of walkways and stairs that allow visitors to safely navigate its depths. As we descended into the cool, damp air of the canyon, I was immediately struck by the dramatic rock formations and the sound of rushing water. The canyon walls are adorned with mosses, ferns, and even red and green algae.

The Rio Sass Canyon is more than just a pretty sight; it's a journey through time. Fossils embedded in the rocks tell tales of ancient marine life, while stalactites and stalagmites add to the otherworldly atmosphere. The highlight for me was the series of waterfalls cascading down the canyon walls, creating a mesmerizing display of nature's power. The interplay of light and shadow, combined with the sound of rushing water, created a truly immersive experience. Exploring the canyon with friends made it even more special, as we shared our awe and wonder at every turn. It was a reminder of the beauty that can be found in the most unexpected places, and I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to witness it firsthand. The canyon is open from April to mid-November, and there are even nighttime tours available with spectacular lighting.

Nature always wears the colors of the spirit.

Reflecting at the Victory Monument

After emerging from the depths of the canyon, we drove to Bolzano to visit the Victory Monument. This monument, erected on the orders of Benito Mussolini, is a complex symbol of the region's history. It commemorates Italy's victory in World War I and its annexation of South Tyrol, which had previously been part of Austria.

Standing before the imposing structure, I couldn't help but feel a sense of conflicting emotions. The monument's grand design and historical significance are undeniable, yet its association with a divisive period in history is equally apparent. The monument has been a focal point of tension between the Italian and German-speaking communities in Bolzano since its construction. It was designed by architect Marcello Piacentini and features lictorial pillars. The Latin inscription on the main façade, HIC PATRIAE FINES SISTE SIGNA / HINC CETEROS EXCOLVIMVS LINGVA LEGIBVS ARTIBVS, translates to: Here at the border of the fatherland set down the banner. From this point on we educated the others with language, law, and culture.

Lunch at Trattoria Piedicastello was a delightful interlude. The restaurant is known for its traditional Italian cuisine, and I enjoyed a plate of ragout, polenta, and tiramisu. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the food provided a much-needed energy boost for the afternoon's adventures. I was particularly impressed by the tiramisu.

Ascending to the Terrazza delle Dolomiti

Our final destination for the day was the Terrazza delle Dolomiti, located on the Sella group in Val di Fassa. To reach it, we took a cable car from Passo Pordoi up to Sass Pordoi. As the cable car ascended, the views became increasingly spectacular. The Dolomites, with their jagged peaks and imposing presence, stretched out before us in all their glory. The Terrazza delle Dolomiti is a natural terrace offering a 360-degree view of the surrounding mountains. From this vantage point, we could see the Conca d'Ampezzo, the Pale di San Martino, the Marmolada, and the Sassolungo. The Rifugio Maria is located at the arrival of the cable car.

Standing on the terrace, surrounded by such natural beauty, I felt a profound sense of peace and gratitude. It was the perfect way to conclude our trip to Trentino-Alto Adige, a region that has captured my heart with its stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the occasional gust of wind. The views were simply breathtaking, and I could have spent hours simply gazing at the mountains. We took countless photos, trying to capture the beauty of the moment, but I knew that no image could truly do it justice.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the mountains, we made our way back down the cable car, filled with memories that will last a lifetime. It was a fitting end to a trip that had been nothing short of magical.

Before heading back, we had a lovely dinner at Ristorante Lusernarhof - cucina di montagna. The restaurant offered a delightful culinary experience set against the stunning backdrop of the Italian Alps. The menu featured mountain cuisine that beautifully combined tradition with modern flair. The QR code menu revealed an array of enticing options, from rich pappardelle with porcini mushrooms to exquisite potato meatballs infused with speck and local cheese. The staff were friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect place to celebrate the end of our adventure and reflect on all that we had experienced.

Finally, before calling it a night, we stopped by Anima Lounge & Fish bar for a nightcap. The bar had a cool atmosphere and offered a range of drinks. It was a great way to unwind and enjoy each other's company before heading back to our accommodations.
