Solo Adventure to Askja Caldera: A Journey into Iceland's Wild Heart
Day 4: Dragon's Gully and Highland Wonders: A Day of Discovery in Askja Caldera
Explore the mystical Drekagil and majestic Dyngjufjoll in Askja Caldera. A solo adventure through Iceland's geological marvels.
Whispers of Dragons and Giants
Today was a day of embracing the raw, untamed heart of Iceland. It’s a stark contrast to the manicured parks of Hamburg, but that’s precisely why I came. I wanted to feel the earth breathe, to witness landscapes that have been sculpted by millennia of volcanic activity and glacial movements. I set out with a sense of eager anticipation, ready to explore the famed Drekagil and the imposing Dyngjufjoll mountains.

The day began, as most good days do, with a hearty breakfast. I stopped at Systrakaffi in Kirkjubaejarklaustur. This cozy, family-run restaurant was a delightful surprise. I opted for the local Arctic charr, a decision I didn't regret. Served with baby potatoes, Parisian carrots, and a silky white wine sauce, it was a true taste of Iceland. Fuelled up, I knew I had a long drive ahead of me to reach the northern reaches of the highlands.
The drive itself was an experience. The landscape transformed from lush green pastures to stark, volcanic plains. The roads became increasingly rugged, a true test for my 4x4. I remembered thinking how different this was from my usual cycling routes along the Elbe River, but the anticipation of reaching Askja kept me going.
First on the agenda was Drekagil, the Dragon's Gully. The name alone conjured images of mythical creatures and hidden lairs. And it didn’t disappoint. As I approached, the canyon revealed itself as a dark, narrow gully carved into the landscape. The twisted lava formations were indeed reminiscent of dragons and other fantastical beasts. I could almost imagine them guarding the entrance to some hidden world.
Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that lead you off the beaten path, into the heart of the unknown.
I spent a couple of hours hiking through Drekagil, marveling at the bizarre basalt formations and the dramatic lava fields. The canyon floor was rocky and uneven, requiring careful footing. As I ventured deeper, the walls of the gully grew steeper, casting long shadows that danced across the terrain. The air was still and silent, adding to the sense of mystery and isolation. I reached the end of the canyon where a delicate waterfall cascaded down the cliff face. It was a hidden gem, a reward for those who dared to explore this remote corner of Iceland.
It's incredible to think that NASA used this very location to train astronauts for the moon landing. Standing there, surrounded by the alien landscape, I could understand why. The barren terrain, the lack of vegetation, the stark contrast of light and shadow – it all felt otherworldly. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the vastness of the universe and the insignificance of our place within it.
After Drekagil, my next destination was Dyngjufjoll, the mountain range that surrounds Askja Caldera. The sheer scale of these mountains was awe-inspiring. They rose majestically from the plains, their peaks often shrouded in mist and cloud. As I drove closer, the terrain became even more challenging. The roads were unpaved and rocky, and I had to navigate several river crossings. It was slow going, but the scenery was worth every bump and jolt. The mountains are mostly made of palagonite, with thick layers of lava and ash covering it in most places. The annual rainfall here is minimal, since the area lies in the rain shadow to the northeast of the Vatnajökull glacier.

I stopped for lunch at Grána Bistro in Sauðárkrókur, a charming little place known for its cozy atmosphere and local ingredients. I decided on a light but satisfying meal of grilled squash with whipped ricotta and lemon, which gave me a needed energy boost. It was a welcome respite from the ruggedness of the highlands, a moment to recharge before continuing my adventure.
As I stood at the foot of Dyngjufjoll, I felt a sense of reverence. These mountains have stood for millennia, witnessing countless volcanic eruptions and glacial movements. They are a testament to the power and resilience of nature. I took a deep breath, filling my lungs with the crisp, clean air. It was a moment of pure connection, a feeling of being completely present in the moment.
I decided to hike up one of the lower peaks to get a better view of the surrounding landscape. The trail was steep and challenging, but the views from the top were breathtaking. I could see for miles in every direction – the vast expanse of the highlands, the shimmering waters of Lake Askja, and the distant Vatnajökull glacier. It was a panorama of raw, untamed beauty, a landscape that had been shaped by fire and ice.
The weather in the highlands can be unpredictable, and today was no exception. As I descended from the peak, the sky darkened, and a light rain began to fall. I quickened my pace, eager to reach the shelter of my car. By the time I arrived, the rain had intensified, turning into a full-blown downpour. I was soaked to the bone, but I didn't mind. I felt alive, invigorated by the elements.
For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Drangar Restaurant in Vik. Located in the modern Hotel Kría, the restaurant offered stunning views of the surrounding cliffs. I opted for the Icelandic lamb, which was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. It was a fitting end to a day of adventure, a chance to reflect on the incredible experiences I had had.
After dinner, I decided to check out the local nightlife. I headed to SKY Bar in Reykjavik, hoping to unwind after a long day of exploring. While Askja Caldera itself may be known for its rugged landscapes, SKY Bar offered a vibrant contrast with its stunning views and inviting atmosphere. I enjoyed a couple of local beers while listening to some live music. It was a great way to end the day, a chance to socialize and soak in the atmosphere of Reykjavik.
As I drove back to my campsite, I couldn't help but smile. Today had been everything I had hoped for and more. I had explored mystical canyons, hiked majestic mountains, and witnessed landscapes that had taken my breath away. I had connected with nature on a deep level, feeling a sense of awe and wonder that I will never forget. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Leirhnjukur and Sleðaásgjá. I'm excited to see what new adventures await me in this land of fire and ice.
“The journey, not the arrival, matters; the voyage, not the landing, is what counts.” – Dr. Paul Farmer. Today reinforced that sentiment profoundly.
Back at my campsite, I made a note to buy extra memory cards for my camera; I am running out of space for all the photos I am taking. I also realized that I forgot to pack a portable water filter. I will need to buy one tomorrow when I am in town. But for now, I am content. As I crawled into my sleeping bag, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this incredible place. Iceland, you have captured my heart. Good night!
