After a long journey from Hamburg, via Marrakesh, I finally arrived in the Dades Valley, ready to immerse myself in its famed landscapes and Berber culture. As an urban beekeeper used to the structured environment of Hamburg, I was eager to embrace the raw, untamed beauty of Morocco. The air here is different – dry and carrying the scent of earth and distant spices. It's a welcome change from the familiar North Sea breeze.

My first day was designed to offer a taste of what this valley is all about, and it certainly delivered. I decided against booking a hotel for this trip, opting instead to throw myself into the local culture by staying in guesthouses and the occasional campsite. I’m hoping it will give me a more intimate understanding of the region, and a chance to support the local economy directly.

Panoramic Vistas and Monkey Business

My initial stop was the Dades panoramic view. The drive there was already captivating, with the landscape transforming into a canvas of ochre and red hues. The panoramic view itself was breathtaking. From this vantage point, the valley unfolded beneath me, a tapestry of winding rivers, steep cliffs, and远处的 mountains. The scale of it all was humbling, a potent reminder of nature's grandeur. I'm already feeling more connected to the earth here than I do back in Hamburg, and that's exactly what I was hoping for from this trip.

Next on the agenda was the Monkey Fingers Canyon. The name alone had piqued my curiosity, and the reality didn't disappoint. The rock formations are truly unique, resembling gnarled fingers reaching skyward. I spent a good couple of hours hiking through the canyon, scrambling over rocks, and marveling at the geological artistry. The November air was crisp and cool, perfect for hiking, and the sun cast long shadows that danced across the canyon walls. While wandering through the canyon, I couldn't help but think about how different this landscape is from the urban environment I am used to. Back home, I work to create green spaces on rooftops; here, nature reigns supreme in its most dramatic form. The experience was both exhilarating and peaceful, a welcome contrast to the hustle and bustle of city life. I even managed to capture some photos that I think will look great on the blog.

A Taste of Berber Hospitality

After a morning of sightseeing, it was time to sample the local cuisine. For breakfast, I stopped at CAFE RESTAURANT AIT SEDRAT. The warm hospitality of the staff made me feel instantly welcome, a sentiment that seems to be echoed by other travelers.

Lunch was at Restaurant Fatima Berber gorges du dades. The tagine here was incredible, packed with flavor and cooked to perfection. It was the perfect place to relax and refuel after a morning of exploration. For dinner, I decided to treat myself to a meal at Chez Pierre. This auberge is known for its innovative cuisine that fuses European and Moroccan flavors. It was a fitting end to a day of sensory overload, a chance to savor the flavors of Morocco in a tranquil and elegant setting. I even chatted with some fellow travelers, swapping stories and travel tips. It's moments like these that make solo travel so rewarding.

A Touch of Commerce

Before dinner, I took some time to explore the local shops, stopping by accessoires dades abd elhamid. Reflections on Day One

As the sun set over the Dades Valley, casting a warm golden glow over the landscape, I reflected on my first day. It had been a whirlwind of sights, sounds, and flavors, a sensory feast that had left me feeling both exhilarated and grounded. The Dades Valley is a place of stark contrasts – rugged mountains and lush oases, ancient traditions and modern life, solitude and connection. It's a place that challenges and inspires, a place that stays with you long after you've left. I already know that this trip will be more than just a vacation; it will be an experience that shapes and changes me. I am looking forward to what tomorrow brings, especially the planned visit to the Roses Valley and the Gorges du Dadés. I’m hoping to find some inspiration there for my beekeeping back in Hamburg.

I'm also grateful that I remembered to pack my hiking boots; they were essential for navigating the rocky terrain of the Monkey Fingers Canyon. However, I am kicking myself for forgetting my portable solar charger and travel guidebook for Morocco. Relying on local guesthouses for charging my devices might be challenging, and a guidebook would have been helpful for understanding the region's history and culture. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!

Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Valley of the Roses and the Gorges du Dadés, and perhaps find a quiet spot to brew some mead using local honey – a little taste of Hamburg in the heart of Morocco.
