Day 4: Whispers of the Ancient Beech Forest: A Day of Discovery in Abruzzo National Park
Immerse yourself in Abruzzo National Park's ancient beech forest and cultural treasures with a day of natural beauty and local history.
Enchanted Forests and Echoes of the Past
Today was a day of diving deep into the heart of Abruzzo National Park, a journey that intertwined the serenity of ancient forests with the echoes of local history. It’s amazing how much you can discover when you let curiosity lead the way, uncovering hidden gems and stories woven into the very fabric of the landscape.
Our day began, as usual, with breakfast at Ristorante “IL PICCHIO”. It’s becoming a comforting ritual, starting the day with the familiar tastes of Pescasseroli. This morning, I savored the delightful *pappardelle* , while David enjoyed a hearty serving of local cheese and salame. Sophie, ever predictable, opted for a simple yet satisfying pastry. The panoramic view of the Sangro River from the veranda was, as always, the perfect backdrop to our morning meal.

Fuelled and ready, we set off for Faggeta Vetusta Coppo del Principe. The drive itself was a treat, winding through roads that offered glimpses of the park’s stunning vistas. As we approached the ancient beech forest, I could feel a palpable sense of anticipation. I had read about these ancient woodlands, a UNESCO World Heritage site, but nothing could have prepared me for the sheer majesty of the place.

Stepping into Faggeta Vetusta Coppo del Principe felt like entering another world. The towering beech trees, some hundreds of years old, created a cathedral-like canopy overhead, filtering the sunlight into dappled patterns on the forest floor. The air was cool and still, filled with the earthy scent of damp wood and moss. Sophie was immediately captivated, her eyes wide with wonder as she skipped ahead on the trail.
We spent hours wandering among the ancient trees, marveling at their gnarled trunks and the intricate patterns of their bark. The silence was broken only by the occasional birdsong and the rustling of leaves underfoot. It was a truly immersive experience, a chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with the natural world.
Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
David, ever the observant architect, was fascinated by the structural integrity of the trees, pointing out how they had adapted to the harsh mountain environment. Sophie, meanwhile, was busy collecting fallen leaves and acorns, her imagination running wild with stories of fairies and woodland creatures. I tried to capture the beauty of the forest with my camera, but I knew that no photograph could ever truly do it justice. It was a place that had to be experienced firsthand.
As we hiked, I couldn't help but reflect on the history of these ancient forests. They have stood here for centuries, witnessing the rise and fall of civilizations, the changing seasons, and the slow, inexorable march of time. It was humbling to think that we were just temporary visitors in this timeless landscape.
After our invigorating hike, hunger beckoned, and we drove back to Pescasseroli for lunch at Ristorante - L'Aquila D'abruzzo. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to sample the regional cuisine. We settled into a cozy corner and ordered a selection of local specialties. I opted for the *carratelli alla pastora* , while David chose the *agnello alla brace*. Sophie, predictably, stuck with pasta. The food was hearty and delicious, the perfect reward after our morning of exploration.

With our bellies full, we decided to explore Pescasseroli Mostra Museo. This small museum offers a glimpse into the history and culture of the town and the surrounding region. We learned about the traditional crafts, the local customs, and the lives of the people who have called this place home for generations.

The museum was housed in a charming old building, its walls lined with photographs, artifacts, and documents. Sophie was particularly fascinated by the displays of traditional costumes, imagining herself as a young girl living in Pescasseroli centuries ago. David, meanwhile, was engrossed in the historical maps of the region, tracing the changes in the landscape over time.
However, upon arrival, we discovered that Pescasseroli Mostra Museo was closed. Apparently, it has been facing some challenges recently. Instead, we stumbled upon a delightful art exhibition, “Emergency in the World,” showcasing paintings by local artists. The vibrant colors and thought-provoking themes offered a different perspective on the region.
Later in the afternoon, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, we decided to stop for a drink at Bar Dell'Orso Di Tarquinio Gaetano. This cozy bar, located in the heart of Pescasseroli, is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. We ordered a round of *spritz* for David and me, and a juice for Sophie. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

As we sipped our drinks, we chatted about our plans for tomorrow. We’re planning to visit Castello Monumentale and Hermitage of Sant'Egidio. I’m particularly excited about the hermitage, a place of quiet contemplation and spiritual significance. David is looking forward to exploring the castle, eager to learn more about its history and architecture. And Sophie, of course, is simply excited about the prospect of another day of adventure.
For dinner, we decided to try Ristorante ConGusto by Panorama. The restaurant is known for its traditional Abruzzese cuisine and its panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. We were not disappointed. The food was delicious, the service was impeccable, and the views were simply breathtaking. As we savored our meal, we watched the sun set over the mountains, painting the sky in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy a portable phone charger. My phone battery barely made it through the day, a rookie mistake for a travel blogger!
