Underground Wonders and Coastal Calm
Today was a day of contrasts, a true testament to the diverse beauty that Abruzzo National Park and its surroundings have to offer. From the depths of the earth to the breezy coastline, it was an experience that both invigorated and calmed the soul.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ristorante “IL PICCHIO”. As always, the food was wonderful, and it set us up perfectly for our first adventure: exploring the Stiffe Caves.

The drive to the caves took us through some of the most scenic landscapes we’ve encountered so far. Rolling hills gave way to dramatic rock formations as we approached Stiffe, a small village seemingly perched on the edge of the world. The anticipation grew as we parked the car and made our way towards the cave entrance.
As we descended into the Stiffe Caves, the temperature dropped noticeably, a welcome change from the warm August air. Sophie was immediately captivated, her eyes wide with wonder as our guide began to explain the cave's history and geology. The caves are a resurgence, where an underground river re-emerges. The interior is a wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites, formed over thousands of years by the dripping water.

The sound of rushing water echoed through the caverns as we ventured deeper. The Sala del Silenzio, aptly named, offered a brief respite from the noise, allowing us to appreciate the sheer scale of the cave. Then, we entered the Sala della Cascata, where a 30-meter waterfall thundered down, a truly awe-inspiring sight. Sophie was thrilled, though the roar of the water made conversation impossible. David, ever the architect, was fascinated by the natural architecture of the cave, pointing out the intricate patterns and formations in the rocks.
Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.
Emerging from the Stiffe Caves, blinking in the sunlight, we felt as though we had journeyed to another world and back. The coolness of the caves lingered as we made our way back to the car, ready for the next part of our adventure.
Our next destination was the Nature Reserve Pineta Dannunziana, located near Pescara on the coast. The drive took us from the mountains to the sea, a transition that perfectly mirrored the shift in landscape and atmosphere. As we approached the coast, the air grew thick with the scent of pine and salt, a refreshing change from the rocky, mineral scent of the caves.

The Nature Reserve Pineta Dannunziana, also known as D'Avalos Park, is a 53-hectare protected area that offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city of Pescara. Named after the famous Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio, the park is a haven for various plant and animal species. As we entered the park, we were immediately struck by the towering pine trees, their branches providing a welcome shade from the afternoon sun.
We strolled along the well-maintained trails, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Sophie loved running ahead, collecting pine cones and leaves, while David and I walked hand in hand, appreciating the serenity of the surroundings. The park is home to the D'Annunzio Theater and the Flaiano Auditorium. While we didn't have time to visit them, it's interesting to know that culture is alive and well, even in the heart of nature.
After our walk, we decided to treat ourselves to a late lunch at Trabocco Punta Cavalluccio. This unique restaurant, built on a traditional fishing platform extending over the sea, offered stunning views and delicious seafood. We savored the fresh flavors of the Adriatic, the gentle sea breeze adding to the experience. Sophie, surprisingly, loved the grilled fish, devouring every last bite.

Before heading back to Pescasseroli, we made a quick stop at La Bifora Antichità, a charming antique shop. While I didn’t find anything to buy, it was fun to browse through the old furniture, ceramics and books, imagining the stories behind each object. It’s these little detours that often make a trip so memorable.

For dinner, we chose Ristorante Luci, known for its traditional Abruzzese cuisine. The meal was a perfect end to a perfect day, filled with local flavors and warm hospitality. As we ate, we reminisced about our adventures, from the depths of the Stiffe Caves to the coastal serenity of Pineta Dannunziana.

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Rocca Calascio, a medieval fortress perched high in the mountains, and the Riserva Naturale Regionale Monte Genzana e Alto Gizio. It promises to be another day of exploration and discovery, and I can’t wait to share it with you all.
As I sit here, writing this blog post, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences we’ve had today. Abruzzo continues to surprise and delight us, offering a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty. I’m so glad we decided to come here, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
Until then, arrivederci!
