Whispers of the Wild

Today was a day of exploration and connection, a reminder of why we chose Freycinet National Park for our family adventure. It wasn't just about seeing new sights; it was about experiencing them together, creating memories that will last a lifetime. From historical bridges to scenic trails, every moment was a new discovery.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Mount Paul Lounge, located within Freycinet Resort. The views from the restaurant were simply breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of Freycinet National Park and The Hazards. As we savored our meal, we discussed our plans for the day, eager to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Tasmania. The menu featured the best of Tasmanian produce, and it was a great start to our day.

After breakfast, we set out for the Freycinet Experience Walk. This renowned walk promised an immersive journey through the park's diverse landscapes. The trail was well-maintained and offered a moderate challenge, perfect for our family. Sophie was excited, pointing out every bird and flower she spotted along the way. David and I appreciated the opportunity to reconnect with nature and each other, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The walk led us through lush coastal forests, where ancient trees whispered stories of the past. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of eucalyptus and the sound of birdsong. We marveled at the towering granite cliffs, sculpted by wind and sea over millions of years. The views were simply stunning, with the turquoise waters of the bay stretching out before us. The Freycinet Experience Walk truly lived up to its reputation, offering an enriching and memorable journey.

Sometimes, the most scenic roads in life are the detours you didn't mean to take.

As we continued our walk, we stumbled upon hidden beaches, where the sand was as white as snow and the water as clear as glass. Sophie couldn't resist taking off her shoes and splashing in the shallows. David joined her, building sandcastles and collecting seashells. I sat on a nearby rock, watching them play, feeling grateful for this moment of simple joy.

After the Freycinet Experience Walk, we drove to Spiky Bridge, a quirky attraction with a fascinating history. Built by convicts in 1843, the bridge is made from field stones without mortar or cement. The parapet features upright stones, giving the bridge its distinctive spiky appearance. We learned that the bridge was part of the convict-built coach road that connected Swansea to Little Swanport and the east coast road to Hobart.

The history of Spiky Bridge is shrouded in speculation. One theory suggests that the spiky stones were intended to prevent cattle from falling into the gully or to deter suicide jumpers. Another theory claims that the convicts used the stones as a form of revenge. Whatever the reason, Spiky Bridge stands as a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the convicts who built it. It’s a curious stopping point for tourists.

We took some photos of the bridge, marveling at its unique design and historical significance. Sophie was fascinated by the spiky stones, running her fingers along their jagged edges. David and I appreciated the opportunity to learn about Tasmania's convict past and to reflect on the hardships faced by those who built this road.

For lunch, we stopped at Edge of the Bay Resort, where we enjoyed a delightful meal with waterfront dining and amazing views. The restaurant’s menu focused on fresh, local produce, showcasing the incredible flavors of the region. David and I savored the seafood dishes, while Sophie enjoyed a classic burger and fries. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, and the service was impeccable. Edge of the Bay Resort truly lived up to its reputation, offering a perfect blend of culinary excellence and stunning scenery.

After lunch, we decided to visit Coles Bay Convenience - General Store And Post Office to pick up some supplies. The store was well-stocked with a wide range of products, including groceries, fresh meat, fruits, vegetables, and Tasmanian beer and wine. We grabbed some snacks and drinks for our upcoming hikes and a few souvenirs to take back home. I also remembered that I had forgotten to buy insect repellent, so I made sure to grab some. The store was conveniently located and had everything we needed.

As evening approached, we made our way to The Bay Restaurant for dinner. This restaurant, nestled within Freycinet Lodge, offered elegant surroundings and magnificent views overlooking Great Oyster Bay. The menu featured contemporary, seasonal Australian cuisine with a focus on local seafood. David and I indulged in the seafood tower for two, a delectable assortment of Melshell oysters, poached scallops, tiger abalone, and more. Sophie opted for the grilled fish of the day, which she devoured with gusto. The Bay Restaurant provided a perfect ending to our day, with its exquisite cuisine and breathtaking ambiance.

From the Freycinet Experience Walk to Spiky Bridge, every moment was a new discovery, a chance to connect with nature and each other. We look forward to tomorrow's itinerary, which includes a visit to Freycinet Peninsula and Sleepy Bay Track. I'm particularly excited about Sleepy Bay Track, as I have heard it is a hidden gem with stunning coastal views.
