Day 14: Coastal Serenity and Culinary Delights: A Day of Discovery in Freycinet
Discover Freycinet's hidden gems: Scenic lookouts, pristine beaches, and delightful dining experiences on Tasmania's stunning East Coast.
Finding Paradise on the East Coast
Today was all about embracing the serene beauty of Freycinet National Park and indulging in some of the local culinary delights. It’s amazing how quickly time flies when you’re surrounded by such breathtaking landscapes and delicious food. David, Sophie, and I set out with a plan to explore, relax, and savor every moment, and I think we managed to do just that!
Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Freycinet Lodge. I always appreciate a good breakfast, especially when it sets the tone for a day of exploration. The Lodge offered a beautiful spread, and we enjoyed our meal while overlooking the stunning views of the park. Sophie was particularly excited about the fresh fruit selection, while David and I savored the local pastries and strong coffee. It's these simple moments of family togetherness that I cherish the most.

Whalers Lookout Scenic Reserve
After breakfast, we decided to head towards Bicheno to visit the Whalers Lookout Scenic Reserve. The drive itself was incredibly scenic, with rolling hills and glimpses of the ocean. Once we arrived, the walk to the lookout was a bit steep, but definitely manageable, even for Sophie. The panoramic views from the top were absolutely worth it. We could see the sparkling crescent-shaped harbor and the rugged coastline stretching out before us. Sophie was fascinated by the information signs that provided historical context to the town. It was a great way to get a sense of the area and appreciate its natural beauty. I made sure to snap lots of photos, hoping to capture the essence of this stunning vista.

The beauty of Freycinet isn't just in its iconic views, but in the quiet moments of discovery and connection with nature.
Friendly Beaches
Next on our itinerary was Friendly Beaches. Located a short drive from Coles Bay Road, these beaches are known for their spectacular views and unspoiled white sand. The drive to the carpark involved a few minutes on a dirt road, but it was well worth it. From the carpark, it was just a short walk to the beach. The sand was incredibly soft, and the turquoise waters looked so inviting. We spent a blissful couple of hours here, walking along the shore, building sandcastles, and simply enjoying the tranquility. Sophie loved collecting seashells, and David enjoyed taking photos of the stunning coastal scenery. I even managed to dip my toes in the water, though it was a bit too chilly for a full swim. The vast expanse of the beach made it feel like we had the whole place to ourselves.

Lunch at Iluka Tavern
By lunchtime, we were all feeling quite peckish, so we made our way to Iluka Tavern for a satisfying meal. We opted for some classic pub fare, including fish and chips for David and Sophie, and a delicious burger for me. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and the food hit the spot after our morning of exploring. Sophie, of course, couldn't resist ordering a side of fries, which she happily shared with us. It was a perfect, casual lunch that recharged us for the rest of the day.

Allure Coffee Co.
After lunch, we made a stop at Allure Coffee Co. I am always on the lookout for a good coffee, and this place came highly recommended. It was a cute little shop, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee was intoxicating. I decided to try their signature blend, while David opted for a latte. We also picked up a small treat for Sophie, a delicious-looking pastry. The coffee was rich and flavorful, and it gave us the perfect boost of energy for our afternoon activities. I even bought a bag of their beans to take back home to Toronto, so I can relive a little bit of our Tasmanian adventure every morning.

Dinner at Granite Freycinet
As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to a special dinner at Granite Freycinet. This restaurant is known for its exquisite cuisine and stunning views, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. We started with some local oysters, which were incredibly fresh and flavorful. For our main courses, David chose the seafood platter, while I opted for the lamb. Sophie, surprisingly, went for the pasta, and she devoured every bite. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was perfect for a memorable evening. As we savored our meal, we watched the sunset over the park, painting the sky with vibrant colors. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.
