Chasing Colors and Tranquility in Freycinet

Today was a day of contrasts, a delightful mix of coastal artistry and serene forest escapes. From the mesmerizing Painted Cliffs to the tranquil depths of Douglas Apsley National Park, Freycinet continues to surprise and enchant us. It’s days like these that remind me why we embarked on this Tasmanian adventure in the first place – to immerse ourselves in nature's grandeur and create lasting memories with my family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Scalefish Takeaway in Coles Bay. David and Sophie were particularly excited about trying their famous fish and chips, and I opted for a classic bacon and egg roll. The crispy batter and fresh fish were a hit, and Sophie declared it the best fish and chips she’s ever had. I must admit, the food was delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to fuel up for our morning adventure. I was so glad the takeaway shop was open today, given that they are closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

With our bellies full, we set off to explore the Painted Cliffs.

I’d heard so much about these natural wonders, and I was eager to see them for myself. The drive to Maria Island, where the cliffs are located, was scenic, with glimpses of the coastline and the Hazards mountain range. However, upon arrival, we learned that the Painted Cliffs are best viewed during low tide, and unfortunately, our timing wasn’t ideal. The cliffs were partially submerged, but we could still appreciate the vibrant patterns and colors etched into the sandstone. The kids were fascinated by the swirling formations of orange, red, and purple, caused by groundwater rich in iron oxides.

We spent some time exploring Hopground Beach, searching for seashells and enjoying the fresh sea air. Sophie loved building sandcastles, and David joined in, creating an elaborate fortress complete with moats and turrets. Even though we didn't get the full Painted Cliffs experience, the beauty of the coastline and the joy of spending time together made it a memorable morning.

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are found not in grand destinations, but in the quiet moments of exploration and connection.

Next on our itinerary was Douglas Apsley National Park.

a stark contrast to the coastal scenery we had just left behind. This park is known for its rugged river gorges, waterfalls, and tall eucalypt forests. The drive to the park was a bit challenging, with some unpaved roads, but the scenery was worth it.

We decided to hike the Apsley River Waterhole and Gorge Walk, a nearly 6km return trail that promised stunning views and a refreshing swim. The trail started with an easy ten-minute walk down to the Apsley River waterhole, a picturesque spot perfect for a quick dip. The water was indeed freezing cold, but Sophie insisted on taking a plunge, shrieking with laughter as she braved the icy temperatures. David and I dipped our toes in, deciding that was enough for us!

As we continued along the trail, the landscape transformed into a lush, green forest. The air was filled with the sounds of birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves. The kids were fascinated by the towering trees and the dense undergrowth, imagining all sorts of creatures lurking within. The trail was well-maintained, but there were a few sections that required some careful footing, especially when crossing the river. We had to hop across rocks, balancing carefully to avoid getting our feet wet. I was glad I had worn my hiking boots, one of my trip essentials!

The highlight of the hike was reaching the Apsley Gorge, a magnificent sight with high dolerite cliff walls and huge boulders. We found a secluded spot by one of the tranquil pools and enjoyed a picnic lunch. I had packed sandwiches, fruit, and some Swiss chocolate, a little taste of home for me. It was so peaceful and quiet, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Toronto. I savored the moment, feeling grateful for the opportunity to share this experience with my family.

After our hike, we were ready for a delicious lunch at Palate Restaurant in Coles Bay.

Luckily for us, Palate showcases multi-course degustation menus matched with outstanding local wines and designed around what is available fresh from the water or paddock that day. The restaurant offers stunning views over Great Oyster Bay and the Hazards Mountains, so we enjoyed the scenery as much as the food.

In the late afternoon, we decided to unwind with a drink at The Branch, a local bar known for its relaxed atmosphere.

David and I enjoyed a glass of Tasmanian wine while Sophie sipped on a juice box. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with exploration and adventure.

For dinner, we chose Richardson's Bistro, enticed by its casual atmosphere and views of Richardson's Beach.

However, upon arrival, we discovered that Richardson's Bistro is closed for the winter season! Luckily, Hazards Bar and Lounge was open and offered casual dining. We enjoyed a relaxed meal of seafood and burgers, reminiscing about the day's adventures.

As I sit here writing this, I can't help but feel a sense of contentment. Today was a reminder that the best travel experiences are often the ones that are unplanned, the detours and unexpected discoveries that lead to unique and unforgettable moments. And tomorrow, we are planning to embark on the Freycinet Walk, plus a Wineglass Bay Cruise. I am so excited to see more of the area!

This trip has been a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with nature and with each other. As a software engineer, I spend so much time in front of a computer screen, immersed in the digital world. It's important for me to step away from that and experience the beauty and serenity of the natural world. And as a mother, I want to instill in Sophie a love for nature and a sense of responsibility for protecting our planet. I hope that this trip will inspire her to be a lifelong explorer and a steward of the environment.

Tomorrow, we plan to tackle the Freycinet Walk and hopefully catch a glimpse of Wineglass Bay from a different perspective. We're also considering a Wineglass Bay Cruise to experience the bay from the water. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us!

Tasmania is celebrating the 25th edition of the Freycinet Challenge in early October 2025, but unfortunately we are visiting outside of that time frame.

And a final note: I really must remember to pack insect repellent next time! Those pesky mosquitoes are relentless, even in October. And an extra SD card for my camera would have been useful too, as I nearly ran out of space today. Note to self: always be prepared!

Despite these minor setbacks, today was a resounding success. Freycinet has captured our hearts, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.
