A Fond Farewell

As my 12-day solo adventure in Norway's Rondane National Park draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment, a touch of sadness at leaving this serene wilderness, and an overwhelming gratitude for the experiences I've had. This journey has been more than just a trip; it's been a personal retreat, a chance to reconnect with nature and myself.

My final day began with a hearty breakfast at Rondane Haukliseter Fjellhotel. The breakfast buffet was filled with fresh, local ingredients. After breakfast, I decided to take one last hike up Kvamsfjellet. The views from the top were breathtaking, offering a panoramic vista of Rondane's majestic peaks and sprawling plateaus. The air was crisp and clean, and the silence was broken only by the occasional call of a bird. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to this stunning landscape.

As I descended Kvamsfjellet, I made my way towards Elvepromenaden in Otta. This serene trail offered a gentle and peaceful walk along the river, allowing me to reflect on the past twelve days. The sound of the flowing water and the lush greenery created a calming atmosphere, a perfect setting for contemplation. I thought about Sophie and David back home in Toronto, already planning my return and a family adventure to these lands.

The journey may be ending, but the memories and the lessons learned will last a lifetime.

For lunch, I stopped at Rondane Høyfjellshotell. The hotel had a vintage ski hotel vibe. The restaurant served hearty Norwegian fare, and the views from the dining room were simply amazing. I savored each bite, knowing it would be my last taste of traditional Norwegian cuisine on this trip. After lunch, I took a moment to explore the hotel's surroundings, admiring the charming architecture and the stunning natural beauty.

In the late afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Toppen Skybar. Although Toppen Skybar is located in Lillehammer, I was still able to enjoy the evening at the bar. Sipping on an expertly crafted cocktail while watching the sunset over the mountains was the perfect way to celebrate the end of my solo adventure. The atmosphere was sophisticated yet inviting, and I struck up a conversation with a few fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter.

For my final dinner, I chose Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane. This cozy resort offered a wide range of amenities, including a pool, sauna, and steam room. The dinner was delicious, with a focus on regional cuisine. After dinner, I took a relaxing dip in the pool, letting the warm water soothe my tired muscles. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of hiking and exploring.

As I prepare to leave Rondane tomorrow, I am filled with gratitude for this incredible experience. I came here seeking solitude and a connection with nature, and I found exactly that. The majestic mountains, the serene landscapes, and the warm hospitality of the Norwegian people have left an indelible mark on my soul. I will cherish these memories forever, and I know that I will return to Rondane someday soon. The thought of sharing this beautiful place with David and Sophie fills me with excitement. I can already imagine Sophie's eyes widening at the sight of the reindeer and David's appreciation for the minimalist, functional design of the local architecture. Perhaps we'll even try our hand at cross-country skiing together. It's a trip I know they'll both cherish as much as I have this solo journey.

This trip also provided some valuable lessons. Firstly, I really need to remember to pack a portable charger next time []. My phone battery died on the second day, which made navigation a little tricky. Also, I completely forgot a first aid kit []. Luckily, I didn't need it, but it's always better to be prepared. And sunscreen! The Norwegian sun can be surprisingly strong, especially at higher altitudes. I ended up with a bit of a sunburn on my nose. Despite these minor mishaps, the trip was a resounding success. I feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle whatever challenges lie ahead.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to start planning our family trip as soon as I got back to Toronto. I wanted to make sure we booked accommodations well in advance and secured a rental car that could handle the mountain roads. I imagined us hiking together, exploring the local culture, and creating memories that would last a lifetime. It was a comforting thought, and I drifted off to sleep with a smile on my face.

Thank you, Rondane, for the adventure. I'll be back soon.

Safe travels to all!
