Finding My Rhythm in Rondane

Today was a symphony of simple pleasures, a day where the rugged beauty of Rondane played its melody against the backdrop of my thoughts. It was a day of rocks and rivers, of quiet contemplation and the gentle buzz of a local pub. Days like this remind me why I crave these solo adventures, a chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the earth beneath my feet.

The day began with a hearty breakfast at Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane. The buffet was a delightful spread of local cheeses, freshly baked bread, and strong coffee – the perfect fuel for a day of exploring. Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane is near Myfallet Waterfall. Sipping my coffee, I gazed out at the rolling hills, a sense of anticipation building within me. Sophie would have loved this breakfast; she’s always been a fan of trying new things, especially when they involve cheese. David, ever the architect, would have been captivated by the structure of the buildings, the way they blend into the landscape. I made a mental note to find some photos to show them later.

First on the agenda was Rullesteinen, a unique rock formation that I had read about. The drive there was an experience in itself, the winding roads offering panoramic views of the park. As I parked the car and started walking, the air was crisp and clean, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. The trail to Rullesteinen was easy enough, a gentle incline that allowed me to soak in the surroundings. The landscape was a tapestry of greens and browns, dotted with wildflowers in vibrant hues. Even though I am Swiss, the Norwegian landscape has something that reminds me of home, of Sarnen and the Alps. It has the same peace, the same quiet strength.

Reaching Rullesteinen, I was struck by its sheer size and unique shape. It was a giant boulder, seemingly out of place amidst the surrounding landscape, a testament to the powerful forces of nature that had shaped this region over millennia. I spent some time simply sitting there, listening to the wind whisper through the trees, lost in thought. It’s moments like these, surrounded by nature’s grandeur, that I find the clarity and perspective that elude me in the hustle of Toronto. I thought about David and Sophie, about our life together, and about the future. It was a peaceful moment, a moment of pure contentment.

Sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in grand expeditions, but in the quiet moments of reflection amidst nature's embrace.
Next on the itinerary was the River Intersection Point, a spot where two rivers converged, creating a mesmerizing display of nature's choreography. The drive to the intersection point was a bit more challenging, the road narrower and winding, but the scenery was even more spectacular. As I arrived, the sound of rushing water filled the air, a symphony of nature's orchestra. The two rivers met with a forceful embrace, their waters swirling and churning before merging into a single, powerful stream. I found a quiet spot on the riverbank and simply watched, mesmerized by the dance of the water. It was a reminder of the constant flow of life, the way things change and evolve, sometimes gently, sometimes dramatically.

Lunch was a simple affair at Rondane Haukliseter Fjellhotel. I opted for a traditional Norwegian meal of smoked salmon and brown bread, a taste of the local cuisine. Rondane Haukliseter Fjellhotell is located 1000 meters above sea level. The hotel had stunning views over Høvringen and the surrounding mountains. The food was hearty and satisfying, and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. I chatted with some of the locals, exchanging stories and laughter. It’s these interactions that add richness to my solo travels, a reminder that even when I’m alone, I’m never truly isolated. It is always nice to learn about other cultures and ways of living.

As the afternoon wore on, I decided to indulge in a bit of local culture with a visit to Kolonialen Pub in Vinstra. It was a cozy little establishment, filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation. I ordered a local beer and settled in, soaking in the atmosphere. The pub was a mix of locals and tourists, all sharing stories and enjoying the camaraderie. I struck up a conversation with a friendly Norwegian man who told me about the history of the area, about the traditions and the people. It was a fascinating glimpse into a different way of life, a reminder that there’s always something new to learn, something new to discover. Kolonialen Pub combines the essence of a traditional pub with a cozy restaurant ambiance. The pub serves local cuisine and drinks in a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.

The evening was spent back at my accommodation, Rondane Friluftssenter AS, where I enjoyed a simple dinner. I sat outside, wrapped in a blanket, watching the sun dip below the horizon, painting the sky in hues of orange and purple. The air was still and quiet, the only sound the gentle rustling of the trees. It was a perfect end to a perfect day, a day of rocks and rivers, of quiet contemplation and the gentle buzz of a local pub. I felt a sense of peace and contentment wash over me, a feeling of gratitude for the simple things in life, for the beauty of nature, and for the opportunity to experience it all on my own terms. As I drifted off to sleep, I thought about Sophie and David. I missed them, of course, but I also knew that this solo adventure was something I needed to do, a chance to recharge and reconnect with myself. I knew that when I returned to Toronto, I would be a better wife, a better mother, and a better version of myself, thanks to the rocks and rivers of Rondane. This park was established as the first Norwegian National Park in 1962. It was expanded in 2003. Rondane National Park is known for its diverse mountainous region. The park seeks to protect the herd of wild reindeer. The park is also home to bears, lynx, moose, musk ox, roe deer, and wolves. It is a truly special place, a place of magic and wonder.
