Adieu, Lisboa!

Today marked the bittersweet end of our enchanting escape to Sintra and Lisbon. While I was sad to leave Portugal's fairytale landscapes behind, I was also excited to explore Lisbon a bit more before heading back to Dublin. Liam and I packed our day with a boat tour, museum visits, delightful meals, and a bit of shopping.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Solar Saloio. The reviews I had read online raved about their homemade products, and they did not disappoint! We enjoyed a lovely continental breakfast with fresh pastries and strong coffee, which was perfect to kickstart our busy day. It was the ideal way to fuel up before diving into our Lisbon adventures.

With our stomachs full and our spirits high, we headed to the docks for our Lisbon by Boat tour. The January air was crisp, but the sun peeked through the clouds, offering glimpses of warmth. The boat tour provided a unique perspective of the city, showcasing its iconic landmarks from the Tagus River. We sailed past Praça do Comércio, the Belém Tower, and the 25 de Abril Bridge, each monument telling a story of Lisbon's rich history. Liam, ever the romantic, held my hand as we glided along the water, the city skyline creating a breathtaking backdrop. I made sure to apply some sunscreen, knowing how easily I burn, even in January!

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are made when you least expect them, and in places you never thought to look.

After the boat tour, we were ready to immerse ourselves in art and culture at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. This museum is renowned for its diverse collection, spanning from ancient Egyptian artifacts to European masterpieces. I was particularly excited to see the René Lalique jewelry, while Liam was eager to explore the Impressionist paintings. The museum's serene gardens provided a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle. We spent a few hours wandering through the exhibits, marveling at the artistry and history on display. It’s amazing how one man’s passion could create such a diverse and captivating collection.

For lunch, we decided to try Monserrate, a restaurant recommended for its traditional Portuguese cuisine. We savored fresh seafood and local delicacies, accompanied by a crisp Vinho Verde. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to relax and recharge. Liam and I shared stories and laughed over our meal, reminiscing about our favorite moments from the trip. He was particularly fond of Pena Palace, while I adored the Quinta da Regaleira.

In the afternoon, we ventured to the Oceanário de Lisboa, one of the largest aquariums in Europe. I had heard so much about it, and it truly lived up to the hype. The main tank was mesmerizing, with its diverse array of marine life swimming in harmony. We watched sharks, rays, and countless other species glide through the water, feeling a sense of awe and wonder. The aquarium's focus on ocean conservation resonated deeply with my passion for sustainable living. Liam was particularly fascinated by the sea otters, which were incredibly playful and adorable.

Next on our list was a bit of retail therapy at O Mundo das Velharias, a charming antique shop. I love discovering unique treasures, and this shop was a goldmine of vintage finds. I picked up a beautiful hand-painted tile, while Liam found an old map of Lisbon. These souvenirs will serve as reminders of our enchanting escape long after we've returned home. It was fun haggling with the shop owner, a true Lisbon local, who shared stories about the city's past.

As the sun began to set, we sought out the Caipirinha bar for a taste of Lisbon's nightlife. We sipped on expertly crafted caipirinhas, soaking in the lively atmosphere. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all enjoying the vibrant energy of the city. Liam and I shared a dance, laughing as we stumbled through the steps of a traditional Portuguese folk dance. It was a perfect way to unwind and celebrate our final evening in Lisbon. I was glad I had worn comfortable shoes, as the cobblestone streets can be quite unforgiving!

For our farewell dinner, we chose Dom Pipas in Sintra, a restaurant known for its authentic Portuguese cuisine and cozy ambiance. We shared a delicious meal of grilled seafood and traditional almond cake, savoring every bite. The restaurant's warm and inviting atmosphere made it a perfect setting for a romantic farewell dinner. We reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip, expressing gratitude for the memories we had created together. The staff was incredibly friendly, making us feel like we were dining in a family home.

As we savored the last bites of our meal, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of sadness that our trip was coming to an end. But I was also filled with gratitude for the incredible experiences we had shared. From the fairytale landscapes of Sintra to the vibrant streets of Lisbon, Portugal had captured our hearts. I know we'll be back someday to explore more of this beautiful country.

Reflecting on our trip, I realized I had forgotten my portable phone charger! It would have been so useful during our long days of exploring. Note to self: always double-check the essentials before leaving home!

As we prepare to leave for the airport tomorrow, I know we'll be taking with us memories that will last a lifetime. Portugal, thank you for the magic, the beauty, and the unforgettable moments. Until next time, *adeus*!

I'm already looking forward to planning our next adventure, perhaps a sustainable tour through the Irish countryside. But for now, it's time to head back to Dublin and share our stories with friends and family. I hope you enjoyed following along on our journey!
