Sunday Escapades in Sintra

Today was a day of diving deep into Sintra’s royal past and soaking up its breathtaking scenery. Liam and I set out to explore three of Sintra’s most iconic landmarks, each telling a unique story of this enchanting town. From the opulent halls of the Sintra National Palace, to the panoramic views from the Castelo dos Mouros, and the serene beauty of Villa Sassetti, it was a day of contrasts and discoveries. And, of course, we made sure to savor the local flavors along the way!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Pic Nic I. Now, I know what you might be thinking – Indian and Italian? It sounds like an odd combination, but trust me, it works! We fueled up with a mix of savory samosas and creamy cappuccinos, ready to tackle the day's adventures. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, perfect for starting our Sunday explorations. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the menu offered something for everyone - which is always a plus when you're trying to please two different palates!

First on our list was the Sintra National Palace, also known as Palácio da Vila. As the best-preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal, it was continuously inhabited from the early 15th century to the late 19th century. The palace is located in the town of Sintra and is a part of the Sintra Cultural Landscape, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walking through its rooms felt like stepping back in time. Each room was more impressive than the last, with intricate tilework and fascinating historical details. The two massive conical chimneys are truly iconic, and the Mudejar tiles were absolutely stunning. I was particularly captivated by the Swan Room, the oldest state room in the Portuguese palaces. Liam, ever the history buff, was engrossed in the heraldic Room of the Coats of Arms, pointing out the different family crests and sharing stories about their significance. It's amazing to think that so many Portuguese monarchs spent time within these walls!

Sometimes, the most beautiful discoveries are found when you least expect them.

After immersing ourselves in royal history, we decided to embrace the outdoors and headed to Villa Sassetti. Nestled on the north side of Sintra's hill, Villa Sassetti is a hidden gem. It’s a bit of a walk from the National Palace, but the fresh air and scenic views made it totally worth it. The villa was built by Victor Carlos Sassetti, inspired by the castles of Lombardy, and it definitely has a unique Mediterranean aesthetic. The circular tower in the Romanesque Lombard style, boasting terracotta tones that reflect a unique Mediterranean aesthetic.

As we strolled through the charming grounds, the tranquil atmosphere was a welcome change of pace. The gardens were beautifully designed, with artificial watercourses adding to the serenity. Although the interior wasn’t open to the public, the picturesque exterior and peaceful gardens offered a serene retreat. It's a perfect spot for a quiet escape and a reminder of the simple pleasures in life. I can see why Victor Sassetti chose this spot for his summer refuge; it’s truly enchanting.

Next, we made our way to Castelo dos Mouros, or the Castle of the Moors. The views from up there were simply unparalleled! The castle was built in the 8th and 9th centuries during the period of Muslim Iberia, as the central place in a territory that was primarily agricultural, and which was necessary to protect its population.

Walking along the ancient walls, I felt a sense of awe and wonder. The castle is a testament to the rich history of the region and offers a glimpse into the past. The wind was strong, but the panoramic views of Sintra and the surrounding landscape were more than worth it. Liam, being braver than I am, ventured to the highest points, snapping photos and marveling at the scenery. I, on the other hand, stayed closer to the ground, enjoying the views from a slightly safer distance. The flags we saw were all different versions of the Portuguese flag as it evolved throughout the ages, which I think is a really interesting touch. As we explored, we found a wooden door, called the Porta da Traição (the Door of Betrayal), which was built as a last resort escape route out of the castle.

By lunchtime, we were both ravenous. We decided to try A Raposa, a restaurant that had caught my eye earlier. Tucked away from the main tourist drag, it exuded elegance and charm. I opted for a local fish dish, while Liam went for the shredded lamb. Both were cooked to perfection, showcasing the chef’s culinary prowess. The carefully curated wine list was an added bonus, and we enjoyed a delightful bottle of local wine with our meal. It was the perfect spot to relax and refuel after a morning of exploring.

After lunch, we wandered through the charming streets of Sintra, popping into A Loja, a local shop. Although I didn’t find anything to buy, it was lovely to see the local crafts and soak in the atmosphere. I always enjoy browsing local shops, even if I don't always make a purchase. It's a great way to get a feel for the local culture and support local artisans.

As evening approached, we decided to unwind at ZID lounge Bar. The intimate atmosphere was perfect for relaxing after a busy day. We enjoyed perfectly cooked filet américain, and the staff were incredibly friendly. The shisha came highly recommended from many reviewers, who mention that it's the best in Portugal and possibly the world. The bar had a beautiful decor and the music added to the ambiance. It was the ideal spot to unwind and reflect on our day of adventures.

For dinner, we ventured to Curral dos Caprinos, a traditional Portuguese restaurant known for its authentic cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with local families, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. We shared a hearty portion of lamb chops and a flavorful beef skewer, both cooked to perfection. The portions were huge, and the food was incredibly satisfying. It was the perfect way to end our day of culinary delights.
