Today was a delightful immersion into the natural beauty and serene landscapes of Lake Constance. From the vibrant floral displays of Mainau Island to the fascinating exhibits at the Bodensee-Naturmuseum, every moment was a reminder of why I cherish this region. It was a day filled with sensory delights and peaceful reflection, making me feel deeply connected to my roots.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Landgasthof Kreuz. I always appreciate starting the day with a traditional German meal, and this place didn't disappoint. The brötchen were perfectly crusty, and the wurst was flavorful. Liam particularly enjoyed the local cheese selection, reminding him of our trips to Irish farmers' markets. It's funny how food can instantly transport you, no matter where you are. I made a mental note to try and recreate some of these dishes back in Dublin, bringing a little piece of Konstanz to our home.

After breakfast, we set off for Mainau Island, also known as the "Flower Island". The journey itself was picturesque, with glimpses of the shimmering lake and charming lakeside villages. As we approached Mainau, the explosion of colors was breathtaking. The island is a meticulously curated garden, boasting millions of flowers, from tulips and daffodils in the spring to roses and dahlias in the summer. Since it's early June, the roses were just beginning to bloom, filling the air with their sweet fragrance. It was truly a feast for the senses.

We strolled hand-in-hand through the Italian Rose Garden, admiring the perfectly manicured beds and the stunning sculptures that dotted the landscape. Liam, ever the romantic, pointed out his favorite rose, a deep crimson variety with velvety petals. I couldn't help but smile, remembering the bouquet of red roses he gave me when he proposed. The island also features a butterfly house, one of the largest in Germany, where hundreds of exotic butterflies flutter freely in a tropical environment. It was magical to watch these delicate creatures dance among the orchids and ferns.

We spent hours wandering through the various themed gardens, each more enchanting than the last. The arboretum, with its collection of rare and ancient trees, provided a cool respite from the sun. We even stumbled upon a small petting zoo, where children were giggling as they fed the goats and ponies. It was heartwarming to see families enjoying the simple pleasures of nature.

For lunch, we opted for Restaurant Anglerstuben, which offered stunning views of the Rhine. The restaurant is a bit outside the city center, but definitely worth it! The food was very creative and elaborate, just fantastic! The service was excellent and the wine advice very knowledgeable. I decided on the fish soup, a local specialty, while Liam chose the maultaschen, a type of Swabian dumpling. Both dishes were delicious, showcasing the fresh, regional ingredients that I love about German cuisine. The service was impeccable, and the ambiance was relaxed and inviting. It was the perfect spot to recharge before continuing our exploration.

In the afternoon, we visited the Bodensee-Naturmuseum, located right on the lakefront in Konstanz. This museum is dedicated to the natural history of Lake Constance, and it offers a fascinating look at the lake's formation, ecosystems, and wildlife. I was particularly interested in the exhibits on the lake's unique flora and fauna, as well as the displays on the impact of climate change on the region. The museum is interactive and engaging, making it a great place for families with children. I even learned a few new things about the lake that I didn't know, despite growing up here.

Those memories are so precious to me, and visiting the museum brought them flooding back.

As the day drew to a close, we decided to treat ourselves to dinner at Romantik Hotel Barbarossa, a charming hotel in the heart of Konstanz's old town. The hotel's restaurant is known for its refined cuisine, featuring regional, seasonal, and Mediterranean specialties. Liam and I both opted for the tasting menu, which included a selection of the chef's signature dishes. Each course was a work of art, both visually stunning and incredibly flavorful. The wine list was extensive, with a focus on local wines. The atmosphere was elegant and romantic, making it the perfect ending to a perfect day.

After dinner, we strolled along the lakefront, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the twinkling lights of the city. We stopped at the Lake Lounge, a trendy bar with a relaxed vibe, for a nightcap. Sipping on a local beer, we watched the boats bobbing gently in the harbor and listened to the sounds of laughter and conversation. It was a scene that could have been lifted straight from a postcard, and I felt incredibly grateful to be sharing it with Liam.

Being back in Konstanz, surrounded by the beauty of Lake Constance, reminded me of who I am and where I come from. And sharing these experiences with Liam made them all the more meaningful.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Uferpromenade in Friedrichshafen and visit the Bismarckturm Konstanz. I’m also hoping to find some time for shopping at REYKJAVIK - nordic lifestyle. It promises to be another day filled with adventure and discovery, and I can't wait to see what Lake Constance has in store for us.
