A Day of Discovery
Today was a delightful mix of history, culture, and lakeside relaxation. Liam and I explored the region, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the local flavors. It’s amazing how much history is packed into these charming towns, and the views, of course, are simply breathtaking.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant Hafenmeisterei in Konstanz. Overlooking the harbor, the restaurant offered a stunning view of Lake Constance. The fresh air and gentle breeze made it the perfect spot to start our day. I enjoyed a traditional German breakfast of fresh bread, cheeses, and some local fruit, while Liam opted for a more substantial meal of eggs and sausage. The coffee was strong and aromatic, just the way I like it, setting us up perfectly for a day of exploration.
After breakfast, we headed to the Archäologisches Landesmuseum Baden-Württemberg. As someone who appreciates history, I was eager to dive into the region's past. The museum is located in Konstanz, making it easily accessible. I was particularly excited, given my German roots, to learn more about the area's early inhabitants and their way of life. The museum visit felt especially poignant, reminding me of my own heritage and the countless generations who have called this region home. It's fascinating to see artifacts from prehistoric times and to imagine what life was like back then. Liam, who isn't usually as keen on museums, found himself captivated by the interactive exhibits and the stories they told. He even admitted that he learned a thing or two, which is always a win!

Sometimes, the best way to understand where you're going is to appreciate where you've been.
The museum itself was well-organized, with exhibits showcasing everything from ancient tools and pottery to intricate jewelry and burial artifacts. Each display offered a glimpse into the lives of those who lived in the region centuries ago. I was particularly impressed by the collection of Roman artifacts, which highlighted the area's significance during the Roman Empire. Liam was fascinated by the early medieval exhibits, especially the displays about the Alemanni tribes who once inhabited the area. We spent a good few hours wandering through the museum, reading the informative displays, and marveling at the craftsmanship of our ancestors.
After immersing ourselves in history, we decided to take a scenic drive to Meersburg, a charming town on the shores of Lake Constance. The drive itself was stunning, with rolling hills, vineyards, and picturesque villages along the way. I was so glad we decided to rent a car for this trip, as it allowed us to explore the region at our own pace and discover hidden gems that we would have otherwise missed. The roads were well-maintained, and the traffic was light, making for a pleasant and relaxing journey.
Once we arrived in Meersburg, we made our way to Hafenmole Meersburg, a beautiful harbor area with stunning views of the lake. The harbor was bustling with activity, with boats coming and going, and people strolling along the waterfront. We took a leisurely walk along the mole, taking in the sights and sounds of the lake. The air was fresh and clean, and the sun was shining, making it a perfect day to be outdoors. We watched as a group of swans glided gracefully across the water, their white feathers shimmering in the sunlight. It was such a peaceful and idyllic scene, and I felt grateful to be able to share it with Liam.

For lunch, we chose Brasserie Colette Tim Raue, drawn in by its reputation for modern French bistro cuisine. Although there are a few Brasserie Colette restaurants, including one in Berlin, I was excited to try the one here in the Lake Constance area. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with small marble tables and bistro chairs that gave it a French touch. We started with a shared plate of oysters, which were incredibly fresh and briny. For my main course, I opted for the goat's cheese gnocchi, while Liam chose the lobster sandwich. Both dishes were outstanding, and the service was friendly and attentive. The house wines were also surprisingly good, making for a memorable dining experience.

After lunch, we decided to explore Meersburg a bit more. The town is known for its medieval castle, which towers over the lake and offers stunning views of the surrounding area. We climbed the winding staircase to the top of the castle, where we were rewarded with panoramic views of Lake Constance and the Swiss Alps in the distance. I tried to imagine what it must have been like to live in the castle centuries ago, defending the town against invaders. It was a humbling experience, and I felt a sense of connection to the past.
As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back to Konstanz, eager to experience the local nightlife. We decided to check out Strandbar Konstanz, a beach bar located right on the Seerhein. The bar had a relaxed and laid-back vibe, with deck chairs, sandy beaches, and a view of the water. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. We ordered a couple of cocktails and kicked back in the deck chairs, watching the sun slowly sink below the horizon. The sky was ablaze with color, and the air was filled with the sound of laughter and music. It was a magical moment, and I felt grateful to be able to share it with Liam. The bar was open from April to October, and I could see why it was such a popular spot with locals and tourists alike.

For dinner, we decided to try Konzil, a restaurant located in a historic building right on the harbor. The restaurant had a charming and elegant atmosphere, with high ceilings, ornate chandeliers, and large windows overlooking the lake. We started with a shared plate of Maultaschen, a traditional German pasta dish filled with meat and vegetables. For my main course, I opted for the fish fillet, while Liam chose the Wiener Schnitzel. Both dishes were delicious, and the service was impeccable. We finished our meal with a shared plate of crème brûlée, which was the perfect sweet ending to a wonderful day. According to some reviews, Konzil is one of only two restaurants in Konstanz with a lake view and great food, so I was glad we chose it!

As we walked back to our accommodation, hand in hand, I reflected on the day's adventures. We had explored ancient museums, strolled along charming harbors, and indulged in delicious food and drinks. It had been a perfect day, and I felt grateful to be able to share it with Liam. I was also excited for what tomorrow would bring. We plan to watch the sunset at Lake Constance, visit Vogelwarte, and do some local shopping in Immenstaad. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure and discovery in this beautiful region.
