Exploring the Wonders of Snæfellsjökull National Park
Day 2: Chasing Glaciers and Exploring Caves: A Day of Wonder in Snæfellsjökull National Park
Join Ursula and Liam as they explore the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier and the mysterious Vatnshellir Cave in Iceland.
Beneath the Glacier's Shadow
Today was everything I dreamed Iceland would be and more. Leaving the cozy embrace of our eco-friendly accommodation, Liam and I set out to explore the heart of Snæfellsjökull National Park. The crisp air, the promise of adventure, and the sheer otherworldly beauty of the landscape had me buzzing with excitement. Little did I know, the day would hold both breathtaking heights and mysterious depths.

Our morning started with a hearty Icelandic breakfast at Hlaðan Veitingahús. The restaurant was charming, and I enjoyed the traditional Icelandic sides. Fueled up and ready, we began our ascent towards the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier.
As we drove, the landscape transformed into a winter wonderland. Snow-dusted lava fields stretched out before us, and the iconic glacier loomed ever closer, its icy peak piercing the sky. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and reverence for this natural wonder, made even more poignant by its starring role in Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth. Liam, ever the pragmatist, was more concerned with the road conditions, but even he couldn't deny the magic of the place.
The weather in Snæfellsjökull National Park in December is truly an experience. The average temperatures usually range from 30°F to 37°F (-1°C to 3°C). We made sure to wrap up in our warmest thermal clothing, which proved to be a wise decision. The wind was biting, but the views were worth it.
We parked the car and took a moment to simply soak it all in. The glacier glittered in the sunlight, a beacon of ice and snow against the rugged landscape. I snapped countless photos, trying to capture the grandeur of the scene, but no image could truly do it justice. It’s one of those places you have to experience to believe.
Sometimes, reaching for the seemingly impossible is the only journey worth taking.
After our glacial vista, it was time to descend into the depths. We drove to Vatnshellir Cave, an 8,000-year-old lava tube formed by a volcanic eruption. I was a little nervous – I'm not usually one for enclosed spaces – but the allure of exploring a subterranean world was too strong to resist. Thankfully, the cave is easily accessible, and the guided tour made me feel at ease.

Strapping on our helmets and grabbing our flashlights, we followed our guide into the darkness. The temperature dropped noticeably as we descended, and the air grew heavy with the scent of damp rock. The cave was vast and eerily silent, save for the occasional drip of water and the sound of our own breathing. Our guide explained how the cave was formed and pointed out fascinating geological formations – stalactites, stalagmites, and bizarre lava structures that looked like something out of a science fiction film. It was incredible to think that we were walking through a tunnel carved by molten rock millennia ago.
Liam, of course, was in his element, peppering the guide with questions about the cave's geology and history. I was content to simply wander and marvel at the strange beauty of this underground world. At one point, the guide turned off all the lights, plunging us into complete darkness. It was a sensory experience unlike any other – a profound sense of isolation and a deep connection to the earth beneath our feet.
Emerging from the cave, blinking in the sunlight, I felt a sense of accomplishment and a renewed appreciation for the wonders of the natural world. We grabbed a quick lunch at Viðvík Restaurant in Hellissandur. The cozy atmosphere was perfect for relaxing after our subterranean adventure. I had the cod, and Liam enjoyed the fish and chips; both were delicious.

With the afternoon waning, we decided to check out The Freezer Hostel, Apartments & Culture Centre. Although we weren't staying there, it was recommended as a unique spot to grab a drink. The hostel had a quirky, artsy vibe, and we enjoyed chatting with some fellow travelers at the bar. It’s always interesting to hear about other people’s adventures and get recommendations for hidden gems.

As evening approached, we made our way to Hotel Langaholt for dinner. The hotel and restaurant are family-run, adding a personal touch to the experience. I had heard great things about their fish dishes, and I wasn't disappointed. Liam enjoyed the buffet, which had a variety of Icelandic dishes.

The staff was friendly, and the location was amazing. The hotel is located close to many attractions on the peninsula. We were even able to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. Although we weren't able to get a clear view, it was still a magical experience.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Visitor Center at Malarrif and the Stone Bridge. I’m particularly excited about the Visitor Center, as I’m keen to learn more about the park’s history and geology. Plus, we intend to stop by TOKEN of ICELAND, a local shop, to pick up some souvenirs.
Back at our cabin, sipping a cup of herbal tea, I reflected on the day's adventures. From the glacial heights to the subterranean depths, Snæfellsjökull National Park had exceeded all expectations. It's a place of stark beauty, raw power, and undeniable magic – a place that will stay with me long after we've left its shores.
And as I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but wonder what other wonders tomorrow might hold. After all, this is Iceland, where adventure awaits around every corner.
I am so glad Liam and I remembered to pack our portable solar charger and reusable water bottles. However, I am kicking myself for forgetting extra batteries for my camera and the travel-sized first aid kit.
Until tomorrow,
Ursula
