Whispers of the Wild

Today was a day of complete immersion in the heart of Peneda-Gerês National Park. It's amazing how quickly the world outside fades away when you're surrounded by such raw, untouched beauty. The air is crisper here, the sounds are clearer, and the colors are more vibrant. It felt like stepping into a painting, one where every element is perfectly placed to soothe the soul.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Casa Albelo do Gerês. I enjoyed a simple meal of fresh bread, local cheese, and strong coffee. It was the perfect fuel for the day’s adventures. The plan was to explore Mata de Albergaria and chase the elusive Cascata da Rajada, two spots that promised to deliver the serene beauty Gerês is known for.

As I set off, I couldn’t help but double-check my backpack, a habit ingrained in me since forgetting the sunscreen yesterday. Today, I was prepared! The sun was already peeking through the trees, casting long shadows that danced along the path. The bus ride from Porto had been smooth, and the anticipation of diving into nature had kept me buzzing with excitement. I had chosen to camp to fully embrace the experience, and the solitude was exactly what I needed. Liam, back in Dublin, had teased me about going solo, but he knows how much these moments of quiet reflection mean to me. Being away from our usual routine and the demands of city life is incredibly refreshing.

Mata de Albergaria was my first stop, and it was like stepping into an enchanted forest. The ancient Roman road that winds through it is incredibly well-preserved, a testament to the enduring connection between history and nature. Walking along the cobblestones, I imagined the legions who once marched along this very path, their footsteps echoing through the centuries. The canopy above filtered the sunlight, creating a mosaic of light and shadow on the forest floor. The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, a combination that always brings a sense of calm.

I took my time, stopping frequently to admire the towering trees and listen to the gentle rustling of leaves. Every now and then, a bird would flit across my path, its song adding to the symphony of the forest. I even spotted a few wildflowers, their delicate petals adding splashes of color to the verdant landscape. It’s moments like these that remind me why I’m so drawn to sustainable living – the profound respect for nature and the desire to protect its fragile beauty. Back in Dublin, my work at the sustainable packaging company feels even more meaningful, knowing I’m contributing to a larger cause.

The hike to Cascata da Rajada was a bit more challenging, but the reward was well worth the effort. The trail wound its way through dense vegetation, and at times, I had to scramble over rocks and navigate muddy patches. But with each step, the sound of rushing water grew louder, fueling my determination. Finally, I reached the waterfall, and it was even more breathtaking than I had imagined.

The water cascaded down the rocks in a series of shimmering curtains, creating a misty spray that cooled the air. It was a scene of pure, unadulterated beauty, a reminder of the power and grace of nature.

I sat on a nearby rock, mesmerized by the sight. The sound of the waterfall was hypnotic, washing away any lingering stress or tension. I closed my eyes and simply listened, letting the rhythm of the water fill my senses. It was a moment of perfect peace, a feeling of being completely present in the here and now. I thought of Liam, and how much he would have loved this place. We’ve been talking about taking a longer trip together, maybe exploring the Scottish Highlands or the fjords of Norway. But for now, I was content to soak in the beauty of Gerês, grateful for this solo adventure.

For lunch, I stopped at Vai... Vai Gerês, a charming little restaurant that served traditional Portuguese fare. I ordered a hearty stew, packed with vegetables and tender chunks of meat. It was exactly what I needed to replenish my energy after the hike. The owner was incredibly friendly, sharing stories about the region and offering tips on other places to explore. It’s these personal connections that make traveling so rewarding, the chance to meet new people and learn about different cultures.

As the afternoon wore on, I made my way back towards the campsite, stopping along the way to take in the views. The landscape was bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, casting a warm glow over everything. I felt a deep sense of gratitude for this opportunity to connect with nature, to escape the noise and distractions of modern life. It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of Dublin, but trips like these remind me of what truly matters – the beauty of the natural world and the importance of protecting it.

Dinner was at Lurdes Capela, a cozy restaurant known for its authentic dishes. I opted for grilled fish, which was cooked to perfection and served with a side of roasted vegetables. The flavors were simple but delicious, a testament to the quality of the ingredients. The restaurant was filled with locals, and I enjoyed listening to their conversations, even though I couldn’t understand everything they were saying. It was a reminder that even in a foreign land, we are all connected by our shared humanity.

Before heading back to my tent, I decided to check out Pirata Do Gerês, a local bar that seemed to be buzzing with activity. I ordered a glass of vinho verde, a light and refreshing wine that’s typical of the region. The bar was filled with a mix of locals and tourists, all eager to unwind and enjoy the evening. I struck up a conversation with a group of hikers from Spain, sharing stories about our adventures and exchanging tips on the best trails in the park. It was a fun and lively way to end the day, a reminder that travel is not just about seeing new places, but also about connecting with new people.

Back at the campsite, I sat by the fire, watching the flames dance and flicker. The stars were out in full force, their brilliance undimmed by city lights. I felt a sense of peace and contentment, a feeling of being exactly where I was supposed to be. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Miradouro da Preguiça and Poço Azul Gerês, two more gems that promise to captivate my senses. I’m also hoping to find some time to visit the Eco Store, as I’m always on the lookout for sustainable products and souvenirs. But for now, I’m content to simply soak in the beauty of the night, grateful for this incredible journey.

As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn’t help but think about how much I’ve grown since moving to Dublin. Living in a new country has pushed me out of my comfort zone, forcing me to adapt and embrace new experiences. And while I miss my family in Germany, I’ve found a new home here in Ireland, a place where I feel connected to both the land and the people. This solo trip to Gerês is just another chapter in my ongoing adventure, a chance to reconnect with myself and the natural world. And I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.

I was glad I didn’t forget the insect repellent, though!
