Flavors and Finds in Trinidad

Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Trinidad, a day filled with the simple pleasures of good food and beautiful craftsmanship. Maximilian and I set out to explore the local culinary scene and discover unique treasures made by talented artisans. It was a day that reminded me of the vibrant markets back home in Arecibo, where the spirit of the community shines through every bite and every handmade piece.

Our day began with breakfast at a charming local cafe [CU-TRI-R1]. The air was filled with the aroma of strong Cuban coffee, a scent that always reminds me of my Abuela’s kitchen back in Puerto Rico. I ordered a *tostada con mantequilla* and a *café con leche*, while Maximilian opted for a traditional Cuban breakfast of eggs, black beans, and plantains. The simplicity of the meal was perfect, a hearty start to a day of exploration. The cafe itself was a cozy spot, with locals chatting and laughing, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. It felt like a true taste of Trinidadian life, a far cry from the hurried breakfasts I often have in Heidelberg before diving into lines of code.

After breakfast, we strolled through the cobblestone streets, soaking in the colorful architecture that Trinidad is famous for. The buildings, painted in vibrant shades of blue, yellow, and pink, seemed to tell stories of a bygone era. We passed by the *Plaza Mayor*, the heart of Trinidad, where the colonial history is palpable. The square was bustling with activity, tourists and locals alike enjoying the beautiful morning. The sounds of music drifted from nearby restaurants, a mix of traditional Cuban tunes and modern melodies.

Our next stop was a traditional Cuban eatery for lunch [CU-TRI-R2]. I was eager to try some authentic Cuban cuisine, and this little restaurant did not disappoint. We shared a plate of *ropa vieja*, a classic Cuban dish of shredded beef in a savory tomato sauce, served with rice, beans, and plantains. The flavors were rich and comforting, a true taste of home-style cooking. Maximilian, ever the adventurous one, tried the *lechón asado*, roasted pork that was incredibly tender and flavorful. The restaurant was simple but charming, with walls adorned with vintage photographs and posters. It felt like stepping back in time, a glimpse into Cuba’s rich culinary heritage.

The best souvenirs are not just objects, but the memories and experiences that come with them.

In the afternoon, we ventured into an artisan shop [CU-TRI-S2], hoping to find some unique souvenirs. Trinidad is known for its talented artisans, and this shop was a treasure trove of handmade goods. I was immediately drawn to the colorful pottery, reminiscent of the vibrant ceramics I grew up with in Puerto Rico. Maximilian admired the intricate woodwork, marveling at the skill and craftsmanship of the local artisans. We spent a good hour browsing through the shop, chatting with the owner about the history and techniques behind the various crafts. I ended up buying a beautiful hand-painted ceramic bowl, a perfect reminder of our time in Trinidad. Maximilian chose a small wooden sculpture, a whimsical piece that captured the spirit of the island.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to a romantic rooftop restaurant for dinner [CU-TRI-R3]. The restaurant offered stunning views of the city, with the sun setting over the colorful rooftops and the distant mountains. The atmosphere was magical, perfect for a romantic evening with my husband. We started with *mojitos*, the quintessential Cuban cocktail, and toasted to our wonderful day in Trinidad. For dinner, I ordered grilled fish, fresh from the Caribbean Sea, while Maximilian opted for lobster. The food was delicious, but the real highlight was the ambiance. The gentle breeze, the soft music, and the breathtaking views created an unforgettable experience. It was a perfect way to end a day filled with culinary delights and artistic finds.

One thing I've noticed is that Trinidad seems to be hosting the Trinidad Gourmet Event this month. It's wonderful to see the local cuisine being celebrated and promoted. It makes me think of the culinary festivals we have back in Puerto Rico, where we showcase our unique flavors and culinary traditions.

Reflecting on today's adventures, I can't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience the simple joys of Trinidad. The flavors, the colors, and the warmth of the people have all left a lasting impression on me. As we prepare for tomorrow, I'm excited about the prospect of exploring more of what Trinidad has to offer. Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of the local nightlife, perhaps visiting a cocktail bar [CU-TRI-B3] to sample some more of Cuba's famous drinks. But for tonight, I'm content with the memories of a day well spent, a day that reminded me of the beauty and simplicity of life.

“Travel is not just about seeing new places; it’s about experiencing new cultures and connecting with people.” It’s a sentiment that resonates deeply with me, as I continue to explore the world and share my experiences with you all.

Good night from Trinidad!

P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to find a small artisan shop selling unique jewelry. I bought a delicate silver bracelet with a tiny *coquí* charm, a little frog that's a symbol of Puerto Rico. It's a lovely reminder of home, and I'll cherish it always. And Maximilian, bless his heart, tried to haggle for a better price, just like my Tío Ricardo used to do at the markets in Arecibo. It was a funny moment that made me feel even more connected to my roots.
