Adios, Trinidad!

As our Cuban adventure draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the vibrant tapestry of experiences Trinidad has woven into our hearts. It's hard to believe our fifteen days here are up. Today was all about savoring those last moments, those final flavors, and dancing to the rhythms that have become the soundtrack to our journey.

Our last day began with a leisurely breakfast at the Community Bakery. The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the air, a comforting scent reminiscent of mornings back home in Arecibo. I savored a sweet roll, its sugary glaze a delightful contrast to the strong Cuban coffee. Maximilian opted for a heartier pastry, fueling up for our final day of exploration. It was a simple meal, but it was filled with the warmth of the local community. It felt like the perfect way to start our last day in Trinidad, surrounded by the comforting aroma of baking and the friendly faces of the locals.

After breakfast, we wandered through the familiar cobblestone streets, soaking in the colorful architecture one last time. The pastel facades, the wrought-iron balconies, the echoes of music spilling from open doorways—it was all a feast for the senses. I made sure to take extra photos, trying to capture the essence of Trinidad to bring back with me to Heidelberg.

Sometimes, the most profound travel memories are not about grand monuments or famous landmarks, but about the simple, everyday moments that connect us to the heart of a place.

For lunch, we ventured to the Vegetarian Cafe. Finding vegetarian options in Cuba can be a bit of a challenge, so this little gem was a welcome discovery. We shared a table with a local family, exchanging smiles and gestures as we enjoyed our meal. The cafe offered a variety of dishes, and I chose a flavorful vegetable stew accompanied by rice and beans. Maximilian tried a veggie burger, which he declared surprisingly delicious. I was so happy to find vegan options, as it allowed me to stick to my dietary preferences while still experiencing authentic Cuban cuisine.

As the afternoon sun began to dip towards the horizon, we found ourselves drawn to the main square. The air was filled with the sounds of music, laughter, and lively conversation. We sat on a bench, watching the world go by, feeling a sense of contentment wash over us. Children played, couples strolled hand-in-hand, and elderly men shared stories over dominoes. It was a scene that encapsulated the spirit of Trinidad—a place where life is lived fully and joyfully.

Dinner was at the Historic Inn Dining. The restaurant exuded old-world charm, with its antique furnishings and dimly lit ambiance. We savored traditional Cuban dishes, accompanied by glasses of local wine. I opted for ropa vieja, a savory shredded beef dish, while Maximilian chose lechon asado, roasted pork. The flavors were rich and satisfying, a perfect culmination to our culinary journey through Cuba.

But the night was far from over. We couldn't leave Trinidad without experiencing its vibrant nightlife one last time. So, we headed to the Salsa Nightclub. The music pulsed through our veins as we joined the throngs of dancers on the floor. I felt a surge of energy, a release of all the emotions of the past two weeks. We danced until our feet ached, laughing and twirling under the disco lights. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to Trinidad—a final, exhilarating celebration of life, music, and connection.

As we danced, I couldn't help but think about how much I've grown during this trip. Immersing myself in a culture so different from my own has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for the world. I've learned to embrace the unexpected, to find joy in the simple things, and to connect with people from all walks of life. Cuba has a way of stripping away the superficial and revealing what truly matters: human connection, shared experiences, and the pursuit of happiness. I'm bringing home not just souvenirs, but memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we head back to Havana for our flight back to Frankfurt. It's bittersweet, of course. I'm excited to return to the comforts of home, but I'll miss the warmth and vibrancy of Cuba. I'll miss the music, the colors, the friendly faces, and the sense of adventure that has filled our days here. But I know that a part of me will always remain in Trinidad, dancing to the rhythm of its soul.

Thinking back to when I first arrived in Germany, I was very much the outsider, but I quickly learned to adapt and embrace the new culture around me. This experience in Cuba has reaffirmed the importance of embracing new cultures and experiences, and it reminded me of the beauty and richness that comes from immersing oneself in a different way of life. It’s a lesson I'll carry with me always, both in my travels and in my daily life.

As I reflect on our last day, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences we've had, the people we've met, and the memories we've created. Trinidad has captured my heart, and I know I'll be back someday to dance to its rhythm once again. Until then, adios, Trinidad! Thank you for the music, the flavors, and the unforgettable moments.

I can’t wait to share more travel stories with you all soon!

And as the sun sets on our Cuban adventure, I am reminded of a quote by the great Cuban musician, Compay Segundo:

The secret of a long life is to have something to do. After eating, rest, and the older you get, the more you play and have fun.

This trip has certainly been a reminder to embrace life, have fun, and keep dancing, no matter what!

Until next time,
Valentina
