Suspended in Time: Our Meteora Adventure Begins
After months of anticipation, Maximilian and I have finally arrived in Meteora, Greece! The journey here was quite the adventure, flying from Frankfurt to Thessaloniki and then driving through the Greek countryside. As we approached Meteora, the landscape transformed into something truly otherworldly. Towering rock formations pierced the sky, and nestled atop them were the legendary monasteries. It felt like stepping into a dream, a place where history and nature intertwine in the most spectacular way.
Our home for the next few days is Archontiko Mesohori in Kastraki, a charming hotel that promised stunning views and cozy accommodations. And it didn't disappoint! The hotel has a cozy coffee shop and a terrace where you can take in the views. After settling in, we headed straight to the Archontiko Mesohori Café for a late breakfast. Sipping Greek coffee while gazing at the Meteora rocks was the perfect way to start our adventure. Maximilian, ever the early bird, was already snapping photos, trying to capture the sheer magnitude of the landscape. I, on the other hand, was content to simply soak it all in, feeling the crisp December air on my skin and the warmth of the coffee in my hands. I made sure to pack weather-appropriate clothing, knowing that the winters here can be cold.

Our first stop was the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, also known as the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Saviour. The climb was a bit challenging, especially with the wind picking up, but every step was worth it. As we ascended, the views became even more breathtaking, revealing the vast plains of Thessaly stretching out to the horizon. Inside the monastery, we were transported back in time. The intricate frescoes, the ancient artifacts, and the serene atmosphere spoke volumes about the monks who had dedicated their lives to this sacred place. I couldn't help but feel a sense of peace and reverence wash over me.

The beauty of Meteora lies not only in its stunning landscapes but also in the profound sense of spirituality that permeates every stone and every view.
Next on our list was the Holy Monastery of Rousanos, dedicated to Saint Barbara. This monastery, perched on a lower rock formation, was equally captivating. A narrow bridge connected it to the mainland, adding an element of adventure to our visit. Inside, the nuns were welcoming, and the gardens offered a tranquil space for reflection. I lit a candle, thinking of my family back in Puerto Rico, and sent a silent prayer for their well-being.

By lunchtime, we were famished! We decided to try Meteoron Panorama, a restaurant known for its delicious food and, as the name suggests, panoramic views. It was the perfect choice. We sat on the terrace, savoring traditional Greek dishes while feasting our eyes on the monasteries in the distance. Maximilian ordered the slow-cooked lamb, while I opted for a fresh Greek salad with locally sourced feta. The flavors were incredible, and the ambiance was simply magical.

After lunch, we strolled through the Meteora Gift House, hoping to find some unique souvenirs. I picked up a small, hand-painted icon of Saint Barbara, while Maximilian found a beautiful book about the history of Meteora. It's always nice to bring back something that reminds us of our travels, a little piece of the place to keep with us.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Taverna Gardenia for dinner, a traditional Greek taverna in Kastraki. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. We ordered a variety of mezedes (small plates) and a bottle of local wine. The food was delicious, the wine was smooth, and the company was delightful. It felt like we were truly immersed in the Greek culture, experiencing the warmth and hospitality that the country is known for.

Before heading back to the hotel, we took a moment to simply stand and admire the monasteries illuminated against the night sky. The sight was so surreal that it felt like a movie scene. Maximilian wrapped his arm around me, and we stood there in comfortable silence, both of us feeling grateful for this incredible experience.
Winter in Meteora is proving to be a magical experience. Despite the cold, the beauty of the landscape and the warmth of the people have captured our hearts. As I write this, I'm already excited about tomorrow's itinerary, which includes visits to the Monastery of the Holy Trinity, Staurós, and Nice View Sunset Cliff. I'm also looking forward to trying Octo Coffee & Breakfast for breakfast, Meteora Vavitsas Restaurant for lunch and Stefanos Meteora Tavern for dinner. And perhaps a drink at Aérino bar in the evening. I'm sure there will be plenty more adventures and breathtaking views to come!
I almost forgot! I realized I forgot to pack sunscreen and a portable phone charger. I'll have to pick those up tomorrow. For now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploring this incredible corner of the world.
Goodnight from Meteora!
P.S. I'm already thinking of how to incorporate some German idioms I've learned into my blog posts. Maybe tomorrow!
P.P.S. I'm also planning on trying to find some inspiration for a software program I've been working on. Perhaps the monks have some insights into problem-solving!
