Arrival in Paradise: Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park
After months of planning and anticipation, the day finally arrived when I, along with my friends, set foot in the heart of Brazil's Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park. The journey from Berlin to Brasília and then the drive to Alto Paraíso de Goiás was long, but as soon as we entered the park, the weariness of travel melted away, replaced by an exhilarating sense of adventure. The raw beauty of the landscape, with its ancient rock formations and vibrant flora, was immediately captivating. I knew right then that this trip would be something special, a unique blend of exploration, relaxation, and connection with nature.

Our day began with an early breakfast at Restaurante Buritis in Alto Paraíso de Goiás. It was a great way to start the day, fueling up with some hearty Brazilian fare. The owner was incredibly welcoming, and even spoke a bit of English, which made things easier for us. I opted for the local specialty, a savory pastry filled with cheese and herbs, while my friends tried the fresh fruit and granola. It was simple, delicious, and exactly what we needed before diving into our adventure.
After breakfast, we made our way to the park entrance. The anticipation was palpable as we approached the gate, eager to explore the wonders that lay within. The Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park, created in 1961 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001, spans an impressive 2,405 square kilometers. The park is known for its unique plant species, ancient rock formations, and stunning waterfalls. The weather in August is ideal for exploring, with warm days and cool nights.
Once inside, we decided to start with a relatively easy trail, wanting to acclimate to the altitude and the environment. The park's altitude ranges from 600 to 1,650 meters, making it the highest plain in Central Brazil. We chose the Canyons and Cariocas Trail, a moderate hike that promised stunning views and refreshing waterfalls. The trail was well-marked, and the landscape was simply breathtaking. The red rock canyons, carved by centuries of erosion, stood in stark contrast to the lush green vegetation. As we hiked, we marveled at the unique flora and fauna, feeling a world away from our lives back in Berlin.
The dry season, which runs from May to October, is considered the best time to visit, offering sunny days and minimal rainfall. This was certainly a welcome change from the often-gray skies of Berlin. We made sure to bring plenty of water, as the sun can be quite intense, even in August. I even regretted forgetting my insect repellent, as the little buggers were out in full force, a note to self to add it to the list of essentials for tomorrow.
The earth has music for those who listen.
Reaching the Cachoeira das Cariocas was a highlight of the day. The waterfall cascaded down the rocks, forming a series of natural pools that were perfect for a refreshing swim. The water was cool and crystal clear, and we spent a good hour soaking in the beauty and tranquility of the place. It was the perfect way to rejuvenate after our hike. My friend, Klaus, even tried his hand at some amateur photography, attempting to capture the magic of the falls. Lena, ever the pragmatist, reminded him to protect his camera from the spray.
As the afternoon wore on, we made our way back to Alto Paraíso, feeling satisfied and invigorated by our first taste of Chapada dos Veadeiros. For lunch, we stopped at Zu's Bistro, an Italian restaurant known for its homemade cuisine and relaxing atmosphere. I was a bit surprised to find such an establishment in the middle of Brazil, but the food was fantastic. I opted for a risotto with local pequi fruit, while Lena enjoyed a classic lasagna. It was a delightful culinary experience, blending Italian flavors with Brazilian ingredients. The restaurant definitely lived up to its reputation, and we left feeling full and content.

In the evening, we decided to check out Na Varanda Sunset, a bar known for its stunning sunset views and live music. It's a popular spot for those looking to unwind after a day of hiking. Located at Fazenda Conceicao, the bar has a relaxed, bohemian vibe, with small tables, pallet sofas, and beach chairs scattered around. As the sun began to set, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors, painting the landscape in hues of orange, pink, and purple. It was a truly magical sight, and the perfect way to end our first day in Chapada dos Veadeiros.

We enjoyed some local drinks, listened to live music, and soaked in the good vibes. The atmosphere was lively and friendly, and we met several other travelers who were just as captivated by the beauty of the park as we were. It was a great way to connect with like-minded people and share our experiences.
For dinner, we chose La Parrilla, an Argentinian restaurant in Alto Paraíso de Goiás. After a day of hiking and exploring, we were all craving something hearty and flavorful, and La Parrilla did not disappoint. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive. We ordered a selection of grilled meats, including beef, pork, and chicken, all cooked to perfection. The flavors were rich and smoky, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Chapada dos Veadeiros, satisfying our hunger and leaving us feeling content and ready for a good night's sleep.
