Explore Cusco's artistic heart! Discover stunning views, unique museums, and hidden waterfalls in the charming San Blas neighborhood.

San Blas: Cusco's Artistic Soul
Today was all about diving deep into the artistic heart of Cusco, specifically the San Blas neighborhood. I've always been drawn to places where creativity thrives, and San Blas, with its narrow cobblestone streets and vibrant atmosphere, promised a day full of discovery. I was eager to explore its viewpoints, museums, and hidden gems, and to share those experiences with Lena and Kai. It's important for them to see the blend of history and artistry that makes this place so special.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at El Mesón de Don Tomas. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for starting our day. Lena ordered the traditional Peruvian breakfast, while Kai, ever the adventurous one, opted for something new. I stuck with a classic Americano, needing that caffeine kick to fuel our explorations. It was a great way to start the day, chatting about our plans and enjoying the local flavors.
Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
After breakfast, we made our way to the San Blas View Point. The walk itself was an experience, with the steep, narrow streets offering glimpses of local life. When we finally reached the top, the view was absolutely breathtaking. Cusco spread out before us, a tapestry of red-tiled roofs and ancient walls, framed by the majestic Andes. Lena, with her curator's eye, pointed out the historical landmarks, while Kai snapped photos, trying to capture the panoramic beauty. It's moments like these, sharing the wonder of a new place with my family, that make these trips so worthwhile.

Next on our list was the Museo Maximo Laura. I had read about Maximo Laura, a renowned Peruvian weaver, and was eager to see his work up close. The museum was a small but vibrant space, filled with colorful tapestries that seemed to tell stories of their own. The intricate designs and the rich symbolism of the weavings were captivating. Lena was particularly impressed with the craftsmanship, noting the skill and dedication that went into each piece. Kai, surprisingly, was also engaged, asking questions about the different patterns and their meanings. It was fascinating to see how traditional techniques were blended with contemporary aesthetics.

Leaving the museum, we stumbled upon TEXTILES POMATAYLLA, a local shop brimming with handmade textiles. The shop was a treasure trove of traditional Andean craftsmanship. Lena was in her element, examining the intricate weaving techniques and the vibrant colors. Kai, though initially less enthusiastic, soon found himself drawn to the unique patterns and designs. We ended up buying a beautiful, handwoven blanket, a perfect souvenir to remind us of our time in Cusco. Supporting local artisans is something I value, and it felt good to contribute to the community in this small way.

For lunch, we decided to try Marcelo Batata Restaurante. The ambiance was inviting, with a rooftop terrace offering stunning views of the city. We ordered a variety of dishes, from traditional Peruvian cuisine to more contemporary fare. The food was delicious, and the views were even better. It was a perfect spot to relax and recharge after our morning explorations. Kai was particularly impressed with the alpaca steak, declaring it one of the best meals he'd had so far. Lena enjoyed the quinoa dishes, appreciating the fresh, local ingredients.

In the afternoon, we decided to venture off the beaten path and search for the San Blas Waterfall and caves. The hike was a bit challenging, but the reward was well worth it. The waterfall was a hidden oasis, a tranquil spot away from the bustling city. The caves added an element of adventure, and we spent some time exploring their depths, marveling at the natural formations. It was a great way to connect with nature and experience a different side of Cusco. I was reminded of the waterfalls back home in Hilo, a connection to my roots amidst the Andes.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Sumaqcha Restaurant for dinner. The restaurant was known for its authentic Peruvian cuisine and its cozy atmosphere. The owner was incredibly friendly, making us feel right at home. We ordered a variety of dishes, including the Rocoto Relleno, a local Cusqueño specialty. The food was delicious, and the service was exceptional. It was a perfect way to end our day, savoring the flavors of Peru and reflecting on our experiences.

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places, but about immersing ourselves in different cultures, connecting with local communities, and creating lasting memories with my family. San Blas, with its art, views, and hidden gems, offered us a unique and enriching experience. As we head into tomorrow, we plan to explore Plazoleta de San Blas, San Cristobal, and the Regional Historical Museum of Cusco, continuing our journey through the heart of this incredible city. I'm also looking forward to unwinding at Paddy's Irish Pub, a perfect way to relax after a day of sightseeing.
Back at the Sonesta Hotel Cusco, I reflected on the day. We’d walked through living history, seen art that spoke across cultures, and shared meals that warmed our souls.
