Florentine Fairytale: Gardens and Palaces

Today was a day of pure Florentine indulgence, a sensory feast that transported me back to the Renaissance. From meticulously sculpted gardens to the opulent halls of a palace, Florence unveiled more of its captivating stories. It’s days like these that remind me why I traded the predictable for the unknown, Kelowna for captivating Italy, and spreadsheets for stories.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at All’Antico Vinaio. I had heard from other travellers that their sandwiches were not to be missed [it seems that they have locations in the US now too!]. It was an ideal way to fuel up for a day of exploration. This place was buzzing, and I could see why – the sandwiches were generously filled with fresh ingredients. I opted for a vegetarian option with creamy stracciatella, pistachio cream, sun-dried tomatoes, and basil on crispy schiacciata bread. It was the perfect grab-and-go breakfast to start my day of Florentine adventures.

Boboli Gardens: A Green Escape

The first stop was the Boboli Gardens, a sprawling green oasis behind the Pitti Palace. Even though it's early March, the gardens were already showing signs of life, with buds on the trees and the promise of spring in the air. As I wandered through the manicured lawns and gravel paths, I couldn't help but feel like I had stepped into a painting. The statues seemed to watch me as I passed, and the fountains provided a soothing soundtrack to my exploration. I discovered hidden grottoes and grand vistas, each turn revealing a new surprise. The Boboli Gardens, with their blend of art and nature, offered a serene escape from the bustling city.

The Boboli Gardens are more than just a garden; they are a living testament to the artistic vision and power of the Medici family.

It was International Women's Day, and I learned that women had free entry to many state museums. It was a wonderful gesture, and I took full advantage of it. I was happy to see many women enjoying the gardens and museums. I even overheard a tour guide explaining the history of the gardens and the role of women in their creation. It was a lovely touch that added depth to my experience.

Pitti Palace: A Royal Residence

Next on the agenda was the Pitti Palace, a colossal structure that once housed the Medici family. I was immediately struck by the sheer scale of the place. Room after room was filled with priceless artworks, intricate tapestries, and ornate furniture. I wandered through the Palatine Gallery, marveling at masterpieces by Raphael, Titian, and Caravaggio. Each painting seemed to tell a story, and I found myself lost in the details of the brushstrokes and the expressions on the subjects' faces. The palace felt like a time capsule, preserving the legacy of one of the most influential families in history. The opulence of the Pitti Palace was a stark contrast to the simplicity of my own life back in Kelowna, but I found myself drawn to the stories behind the art and the people who once lived within these walls.

Giardino Bardini: A Panoramic View

After the grandeur of the Pitti Palace, I made my way to the Giardino Bardini, another of Florence's beautiful gardens. This one offered a different perspective, with sweeping panoramic views of the city. The climb to the top was well worth it, as I was rewarded with a breathtaking vista of Florence's iconic landmarks: the Duomo, Palazzo Vecchio, and the Arno River snaking its way through the city. The Giardino Bardini was less formal than the Boboli Gardens, with a more naturalistic feel. I strolled along winding paths, admiring the blooming flowers and the lush greenery. It was the perfect spot to reflect on the day's adventures and soak in the beauty of Florence.

A Culinary Interlude

Lunch was at Cuculia, a charming restaurant that came highly recommended. It was described as a blend of art, library, cafe and restaurant, and I was eager to experience it for myself. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with bookshelves lining the walls and artwork adorning every corner. I ordered a tasting menu, which consisted of a selection of small vegetarian dishes. Each dish was a work of art, beautifully presented and bursting with flavor. The staff was friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home. Cuculia was a delightful culinary experience that nourished both my body and my soul.

Evening Indulgence

As evening approached, I decided to treat myself to a truly special dining experience at Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura. The restaurant, located within the Gucci Garden, promised a fusion of fashion and gastronomy. From what I read, the original Michelin-starred Gucci Osteria opened in 2018 in the Gucci Gardens on the main floor of the Palazzo della Mercanzia in Florence, Italy. The ambiance was chic and sophisticated, with cherry red velvet banquettes and herringbone wood flooring. The staff was impeccably dressed, and the attention to detail was evident in every aspect of the dining experience. I opted for the tasting menu, which featured a series of innovative dishes that showcased the chef's creativity and skill. Each course was a surprise, a playful exploration of flavors and textures. The Gucci Osteria was a culinary adventure that left me feeling inspired and delighted.

Before heading back to my hotel, I stopped by the Atrium Bar at the Four Seasons for a nightcap. The bar was elegant and refined, with a sophisticated atmosphere. I ordered a classic Negroni, which was expertly crafted and perfectly balanced. As I sipped my drink, I reflected on the day's adventures. Florence had once again exceeded my expectations, offering a blend of art, history, and culinary delights that was simply unforgettable. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

Tomorrow's Journey

Tomorrow, I plan to immerse myself in the art of Fra Angelico at the San Marco Museum and visit the Galleria dell’Accademia to stand in awe of Michelangelo's David. I'm also excited to explore Piazza San Marco and perhaps find a unique souvenir at the Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique. As I drift off to sleep, I'm already dreaming of the masterpieces that await me tomorrow. Each day in Florence is a new adventure, a new opportunity to discover the beauty and wonder of this incredible city. And I am savouring every moment.

Travel is not just about seeing new places, but about opening your mind to new possibilities.

Tonight, I am grateful for the chance to explore Florence at my own pace, to indulge in its art and culture, and to connect with its rich history. As I continue my solo journey, I am reminded that the most meaningful experiences are often the ones that we stumble upon unexpectedly. And I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

I'm also grateful that Maya is doing well at home with Liam. I sent her a picture of the Boboli Gardens, and she said it looked like a fairytale. I hope to bring her here someday so she can experience the magic of Florence for herself. Maybe Liam can come too!

I'm starting to feel more confident on this solo journey. I still miss Liam and Maya, but I'm also enjoying the freedom and independence of travelling alone. I'm learning to trust my instincts and to embrace the unexpected. And I know that this experience will make me a stronger and more resilient person. This trip is not just a break from my work as a UX designer, but also an opportunity to grow and evolve. And I am embracing it with open arms.
