Today, I embraced the Florentine spirit, wandering through its historic streets and soaking in the artistic essence that permeates every corner. It was a day of discovery, from the serene beauty of ancient basilicas to the vibrant energy of bustling piazzas, each location whispering tales of the past. As a freelance UX designer and travel blogger, I find myself drawn to the intricate details and hidden stories that shape a city's identity. Florence, with its rich Renaissance heritage, offers an endless source of inspiration.



My day began with a delightful breakfast at the Winter Garden Restaurant, nestled within the St. Regis Florence. The elegant setting, reminiscent of a 16th-century garden, immediately transported me to another era. Surrounded by lush greenery and bathed in soft, romantic lighting, I savored a delicious Italian breakfast while live piano music filled the air. It was the perfect way to start a day dedicated to exploring the artistic and historical treasures of Florence.

First on my itinerary was the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella. Approaching the basilica, I was immediately struck by its stunning facade, a masterpiece of Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The intricate marble work and decorative elements showcased the genius of Leon Battista Alberti, whose designs also grace the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini. Stepping inside, I was enveloped in a sense of reverence. The basilica's interior is predominantly Gothic but houses beautiful frescoes and artworks by masters such as Masaccio, Giotto, and Ghirlandaio.

Once the site of the city's forum, it later became the location of the old ghetto before undergoing significant renovations in the 19th century. The square's most prominent feature is the Colonna dell'Abbondanza, or Column of Abundance, symbolizing prosperity and happiness. Today's column is a recreation from the 20th century. The original is housed at the bank Cassa di Risparmio in via dell'Oriuolo.

I paused to admire the Arcone, a triumphal arch erected in 1895, and soaked in the lively atmosphere. The square's historic cafes, such as Caffè Gilli and Caffè Paskowski, have been meeting points for artists and writers for generations. I couldn't resist stopping for a cappuccino at one of these iconic cafes, savoring the rich coffee while watching the world go by. It was a perfect moment of Florentine bliss.

For lunch, I ventured to Club Culinario Toscano da Osvaldo, a hidden gem near Piazza della Signoria. This charming restaurant offers an intimate and cozy atmosphere with friendly service. The menu is filled with flavorful Tuscan dishes, and I decided to try the fried artichokes with shoulder ham, a local favorite. The attentive staff made me feel welcome, and the meal was a delightful culinary experience. It was a perfect respite from the bustling city streets.

I was captivated by Benvenuto Cellini's Perseus with the Head of Medusa and Giambologna's Rape of the Sabine Women, each sculpture a testament to the artistic genius of the era.

In the late afternoon, I indulged in some retail therapy, exploring the artisan workshops of Sdrucciolo de' Pitti. This charming street is known for its traditional crafts, from leather goods to mosaics and paper products. I visited Artisans of Sdrucciolo, a workshop specializing in mosaics. I was fascinated by the intricate process of creating mosaic inlays using semi-precious stones. The artisans' dedication to their craft was evident in every piece, and I couldn't resist purchasing a small mosaic as a memento of my Florentine adventure.

A visit to Piazza della Santissima Annunziata is also on the cards. Tonight, though, I'll rest and dream of Renaissance masterpieces.
