Today, I allowed myself to get lost in Urbino, and it was the most wonderful experience. I wandered without a specific agenda, discovering hidden corners and letting the city's history wash over me. Each cobblestone seemed to whisper stories of artists, dukes, and the vibrant Renaissance that once thrived here. It's days like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace and to fully immerse myself in the local culture.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Bar Il Caffe' Degli Amici. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the sight of locals chatting animatedly was the perfect way to start the day. I savored a cappuccino and a flaky pastry, watching the morning light bathe the Republic Square.

It's amazing how a simple breakfast can set the tone for an entire day of exploration. The bar was bustling with locals, a testament to its popularity and a great sign of an authentic experience.

Fuelled by caffeine and anticipation, I made my way to the Museo Diocesano Albani. Housed within the Archbishop's Palace, the museum is a treasure trove of religious art and artifacts. I was particularly captivated by the collection of illuminated manuscripts, their intricate details a testament to the skill and dedication of the artists.

The museum offered a glimpse into Urbino's religious history, providing context for the many churches and oratories I had seen throughout the city.

Emerging from the museum, I decided to explore the Historic Centre, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The area is enclosed by Renaissance walls. Wandering through the narrow, winding streets, I felt as though I had stepped back in time.

The architecture was stunning, with sandstone buildings and brickwork creating a harmonious blend of styles. I was struck by the city's authenticity, its commitment to preserving its historical character.

Next on my list was the Republic Square. This bustling hub is the heart of Urbino, a place where locals and tourists alike gather to socialize and soak up the atmosphere.

I sat by the fountain, watching students from the nearby Raffaello College mingle with families and tourists. The square is surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and shops, making it the perfect place to take a break and people-watch. There was a palpable energy in the air, a sense of community and connection. I even spotted a flyer for the Urbino Kite Festival, which takes place in September; maybe Liam, Maya and I can come back.

For lunch, I chose Portanova Ristorante in Urbino. This charming restaurant is known for its creative dishes and use of local ingredients.

After lunch, I indulged in a little retail therapy at Particolari. This unique shop is filled with handmade crafts and local products.

I picked up a few souvenirs for Maya and Liam, wanting to bring a piece of Urbino back to Kelowna with me. Supporting local artisans is important to me, and Particolari offered the perfect opportunity to do so.

As evening approached, I made my way to Ristorante Taverna La Fornarina for dinner. This rustic tavern is known for its traditional Marchigiana cuisine.

Before heading back to the Hotel Raffaello, I decided to experience Urbino's nightlife at The Bosom Pub. This lively pub is a popular spot for locals and students, offering a wide selection of beers and cocktails.

I enjoyed a pint of local brew, soaking up the lively atmosphere and chatting with some of the locals. It was a fun and relaxed way to cap off the evening.

As I walked back to my hotel, I reflected on the day's adventures. Urbino had exceeded all my expectations. The city's rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture had captivated me. I felt a deep connection to this place, a sense of belonging that I hadn't anticipated. Solo travel has a way of opening you up to new experiences and perspectives, and today had been a perfect example of that.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Teatro Comunale D. Bramante and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta. I'm eager to delve deeper into Urbino's cultural and religious heritage. I might also check out Emporio Gamba for some local products, and perhaps unwind at MaiSenza Lounge Bar in the evening. Each day here reveals new layers of beauty and history, and I am excited to see what tomorrow brings.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made a mental note to buy a portable phone charger when I get back to Kelowna. It would have been useful today, especially when taking photos and using maps.
