A Renaissance Awakening in Urbino
The journey to Urbino was seamless, and I'm thrilled to finally be here! I’m eager to explore this city, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and soak in all its artistic and historical splendor. As a UX designer, I'm always looking for inspiration in the world around me, and I have a feeling Urbino will provide plenty. My heart is full of anticipation as I embark on this solo adventure, ready to lose myself in the beauty and history of Urbino.
After settling into the Hotel Raffaello, I ventured out to begin my exploration of Urbino. Discover the charm of Urbino at Hotel Raffaello, where comfort meets convenience in a centrally located haven for travelers and tourists.

The first stop was the magnificent Palazzo Ducale di Urbino, a building that epitomizes the Renaissance. Explore the Renaissance grandeur of Palazzo Ducale di Urbino, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with art, history, and breathtaking architecture.

From the outside, the Palazzo Ducale offered just a glimpse of what lay within. The solid rock hillside salient was impregnable to siege but was problematic for carving out the foundation of a palace. Built in the 15th century by Duke Federico III da Montefeltro, it is now home to the National Gallery of the Marche - Ducal Palace of Urbino. As I walked through the various rooms, I was struck by the architecture and the sheer scale of the palace. The Galleria houses an impressive collection of Renaissance art, including works by Raphael, Piero della Francesca, and Titian. I spent hours admiring masterpieces such as Raphael's La Muta and Piero della Francesca's The Flagellation of Christ. The way light played across the surfaces of these paintings was simply mesmerizing.
The palace isn't just a gallery; it's a living museum. The architecture embodies the principles of the Mathematical Renaissance, blending mathematics, geometry, astronomy, and art. The two iconic towers reach towards the sky, creating a dialogue with the divine. I learned that the palace was not designed as a fortress but as a cultural meeting point, a place of learning and artistic exchange.
Urbino isn't just a place you visit; it's a feeling you carry with you, a whisper of the Renaissance that echoes in your soul long after you've left.
Leaving the Palazzo Ducale, I made my way to the Casa Natale di Raffaello, Raphael’s birthplace. Explore the birthplace of Raphael at Casa Natale di Raffaello in Urbino, where art and history come alive in a beautifully preserved museum.

It's a modest, 15th-century townhouse where the great artist spent his early years. Walking through the rooms, I could almost feel the presence of the young Raphael, absorbing the artistic atmosphere of his father's workshop. Giovanni Santi, Raphael's father, was a painter himself and introduced his son to the world of art. The house contains some of Raphael’s early works, including a Madonna and Child fresco. It was fascinating to see where this Renaissance master began his journey. The Casa Natale is now managed by the Accademia Raffaello, which was founded in 1869. The Accademia has enriched the house with numerous works of art, including paintings, sculptures, and ceramics.
After immersing myself in art and history, it was time to explore Urbino’s culinary scene. For breakfast, I stopped at Caffe Centrale Urbino. Discover authentic Italian flavors at Caffe Centrale Urbino in Piazza della Repubblica - where every meal tells a story.

This restaurant is known for its traditional Marche cuisine and its historical significance. In the heart of the Renaissance city, the Antica Osteria da la Stella was a meeting and refreshment place for artists and lords of the Duchy of Urbino. Painters like Piero della Francesca and Raphael Sanzio often visited the inn. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the food was exceptional. I savored local specialties, prepared with fresh ingredients from the surrounding territories.
In the late afternoon, I visited Ceramiche Artistiche Urbino, a shop known for its beautiful handmade ceramics. Explore the rich heritage of ceramics at Ceramiche Artistiche Urbino, where every piece tells a story of Italian artistry.

I was captivated by the intricate designs and vibrant colors of the pottery. It was interesting to learn about the local artisan traditions and the techniques used to create these unique pieces. I couldn't resist buying a small, hand-painted bowl as a memento of my visit. Another shop I stumbled upon was Das Andere Urbino Shop, which had unique handcrafted items and souvenirs.
As evening approached, I decided to relax at L'HOST: wine beer & something else. Discover L'HOST in Urbino: A cozy bar offering an exquisite selection of local wines and craft beers in a vibrant atmosphere.

The restaurant had a charming terrace overlooking the cathedral, offering a stunning view. I indulged in a delicious meal of Tagliatelle prepared in the authentic Urbino style. The combination of fresh sausage meat and vegetables was cooked to perfection. The elegant ambiance and exceptional service made it a memorable dining experience.
Before heading back to the hotel, I took a leisurely stroll through the streets of Urbino. The city was alive with activity, and the warm evening air was filled with music and laughter. I paused for a moment to take in the beauty of the illuminated Palazzo Ducale, its silhouette against the night sky a reminder of the city's rich history.
As I walked, I thought about tomorrow’s itinerary. I plan to visit the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista, Chiesa di San Bernardino, and the Botanical Garden of the University. I’m also hoping to check out Old Garage Vintage and perhaps enjoy some live music at the Urbino Jazz Club.
Reflecting on the day, Urbino has already captured my heart. This Renaissance gem is a treasure trove of art, history, and culinary delights. I am so glad I decided to come here, and I look forward to discovering more of its hidden corners in the days to come.
