Day 7: A Day of Renaissance Views and Hidden Gems in Urbino
Discover Urbino's panoramic views, hidden staircases, and artistic tributes in a day filled with Renaissance charm and culinary delights.
Urbino's Unveiled Beauty
Today was a day of wandering through Urbino's picturesque corners, discovering breathtaking views, and stumbling upon hidden gems that whispered stories of the Renaissance. It's days like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace and soak in the unique atmosphere of each place.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at RIO’S. I opted for a simple yet satisfying *piadina* with prosciutto and cheese, accompanied by a strong Italian coffee. Fuelling up for the day ahead was essential, as I knew I would be doing a lot of walking. The brothers running the place were super friendly, making me feel right at home. It’s these small, personal touches that really make a difference when you're travelling alone.

First on my itinerary was the Punto Panoramico di Urbino. The walk up was a bit steep, but the view was more than worth it. From this vantage point, Urbino unfolded before me in all its glory – the terracotta rooftops, the rolling hills in the distance, and the majestic Ducal Palace dominating the skyline. I spent a good hour simply taking it all in, snapping photos, and etching the scene into my memory. It was one of those moments where I felt incredibly grateful for the opportunity to travel and experience such beauty.

The beauty of Urbino isn't just in its grand monuments, but in the quiet corners and hidden details that reveal its soul.
Next, I ventured towards the Scalinata del pozzo della polenta. This staircase, with its intriguing history, is a bit of a hidden gem. The legend says that a farmer lost a sack of cornmeal down the well, leading to the humorous tale of making polenta in the well. It’s a charming story that adds a touch of whimsy to the city's rich history. The staircase itself is quite impressive, and I enjoyed the challenge of climbing up and down, imagining what life must have been like for the people who used it centuries ago. Corinaldo also has a similar story about polenta.

After all that walking, lunch was calling my name. I decided to try Ristorante Pizzeria Locanda Del Blasone. The *passatelli* with porcini mushrooms and truffle oil was incredible. The service was friendly and efficient, and the prices were reasonable. It was the perfect spot to refuel before continuing my exploration of Urbino.

In the afternoon, I paid a visit to the Monument to Raphael. As someone with Israeli roots, I’ve always been drawn to art and history, and Raphael is one of the Renaissance masters I admire most. The monument itself is a fitting tribute to Urbino's most famous son, and the surrounding gardens offer a peaceful place to reflect on his legacy. I took some time to admire the statue and read about Raphael's life and work, feeling a sense of connection to this artistic genius who once walked the same streets as I was now.

Before dinner, I did some shopping at Maroccini - Articoli da Regalo & Liste Nozze. I was looking for a small souvenir to take back home to Maya, and I found a beautiful hand-painted ceramic trinket box that I knew she would love. The shop was filled with all sorts of lovely gifts and homewares, and I could have easily spent hours browsing. It’s nice to support local artisans and find unique items that you won’t see anywhere else.

For dinner, I chose Magna Grecia, a Greek restaurant that came highly recommended. As someone who grew up in Israel, I have a soft spot for Mediterranean cuisine, and this place did not disappoint. I started with the *spanakopita*, followed by the *moussaka*. Everything was delicious and authentic, and the staff were warm and welcoming. It was a nice change of pace from the traditional Italian food I had been eating, and it reminded me of home.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out ENJOY Disco Urbino. I am not much of a disco person, but I figured why not. It was a fun way to unwind and experience a different side of Urbino's nightlife. I nursed a glass of local wine, listened to the music, and watched the locals dance and have a good time. It was a bit outside of my comfort zone, but I am glad I did it. It’s these unexpected experiences that often turn out to be the most memorable.

As I walked back to Hotel Raffaello, I couldn't help but smile. Urbino had charmed me with its beauty, history, and hidden gems. Tomorrow, I am planning to visit Arco di Fondarca and Abbazia di San Vincenzo al Furlo. It’s a reminder that even in a small town like Kelowna, there’s a whole world waiting to be explored. And as a solo traveler, I have the freedom to do just that.

I made sure to call Liam and Maya before going to bed. Maya was excited to hear about the trinket box I bought for her, and Liam was curious about the disco. It’s nice to know that even when I am far away, I am still connected to my family and sharing my experiences with them. Good night from Urbino!
