First Impressions of the Blue Pearl

After a scenic drive from Tangier, I finally arrived in Chefchaouen with my friends. The anticipation had been building ever since we finalized our travel plans back in Heidelberg. Known as the 'Blue Pearl' of Morocco, Chefchaouen was everything I had imagined and more. The city is nestled in the Rif Mountains, and the September air was crisp and refreshing. I couldn't wait to dive into the blue-washed streets and experience the local culture.

Our first stop was Maison D'hôtes Afassi, a charming guesthouse that promised an authentic Moroccan experience. After quickly settling in, we ventured out to explore the famed Chefchaouen Medina.

The moment we stepped into the Medina, it felt like entering another world. Every building, every alleyway was painted in various shades of blue. It was surreal and incredibly beautiful. The light was soft, creating a tranquil atmosphere that immediately put me at ease.

In the heart of Chefchaouen, every corner tells a story, every shade of blue whispers a secret.

Wandering through the Medina's narrow, winding streets was like navigating a captivating labyrinth. Each turn revealed a new picturesque scene: a doorway adorned with colorful plant pots, a small shop selling handcrafted goods, children playing in the alleyways. I made sure to bring my camera, and I couldn't stop snapping photos. I wanted to capture every detail, every shade of blue, every moment of this enchanting place. Maximilian would have loved this place, he always appreciates unique architecture. I made a mental note to bring him back here someday.

Our exploration led us to the Kasbah, a historic fortress located in the heart of the Medina.

Built in the 15th century, the Kasbah once served as a residence for governors, a military arsenal, and even a prison. Today, it houses an ethnological museum that showcases the rich heritage of the region. We paid the entrance fee – 60 Moroccan Dirhams for tourists – and stepped inside. The museum was fascinating, with exhibits featuring traditional musical instruments, pottery, and weaponry.

Climbing to the top of the Kasbah's main tower offered a breathtaking panoramic view of Chefchaouen. From above, the blue-washed Medina looked even more mesmerizing, stretching out like a surreal dreamscape. The surrounding Rif Mountains provided a stunning backdrop, their peaks reaching towards the clear blue sky. I could have stayed there for hours, simply soaking in the beauty of the scene. It reminded me of the mountains back in Gyeongju, but painted in an entirely different palette.

By lunchtime, we were ready for a culinary adventure. Based on a recommendation, we headed to Cafe Clock for breakfast.

The cafe had a cozy, welcoming atmosphere, and the menu was filled with traditional Moroccan dishes. I decided to try the Moroccan chicken, while my friends opted for the Tajine and the Rfissa. The food was delicious, bursting with flavors that were both familiar and new. The staff was friendly and the service was great, adding to the overall positive experience.

After lunch, we continued our exploration of the Medina, eventually stumbling upon Blue. concept store.

This charming shop was a treasure trove of unique, handcrafted items. I found myself drawn to the intricate textiles and beautifully designed home décor. I purchased a small, hand-painted ceramic bowl as a souvenir, a tangible reminder of my time in this magical city. Hanna would love something like this; I'll have to find something similar for her before I leave.

As the afternoon wore on, we made our way to Restaurant Bab Ssour for lunch.

This restaurant was known for its authentic Moroccan cuisine and cozy ambiance. We ordered a variety of dishes, including Moroccan Chicken Tajin, Moroccan Lamb Tajin, and Moroccan Soup Harira. Each dish was a culinary masterpiece, showcasing the rich and diverse flavors of Moroccan cuisine. The tagines were especially delicious, the meat tender and flavorful, the vegetables perfectly cooked.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Morisco, enticed by its reputation for Italian and Mediterranean cuisine with a Moroccan twist.

I ordered a Tagine, while my friends tried the pizza and pasta. The food was excellent, a delightful fusion of flavors and culinary traditions. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere, and the staff was attentive and welcoming. It was the perfect way to end our first day in Chefchaouen.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow over the blue-washed Medina, we found ourselves reflecting on the day's adventures. Chefchaouen had exceeded all expectations, captivating us with its unique charm and beauty. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, when we plan to visit Plaza Uta el Hamman and Ras El Ma. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of this first day, a day spent lost in the blue heart of Morocco. I think I will try to find Bar Oum Rabie tomorrow night, after dinner at Chez Hicham, for a nightcap.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we stopped at a local café for a cup of traditional mint tea. Sipping the sweet, fragrant tea, I watched as the Medina slowly transformed under the soft glow of the streetlights. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music, creating a vibrant, lively atmosphere. It was the perfect ending to a perfect day.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore Plaza Uta el Hamman and Ras El Ma, and I am excited to see what new adventures await. But for now, I'm content to savor the memories of this first day, a day spent lost in the blue heart of Chefchaouen.
