A Day Above the Blue Pearl

Today was all about seeing Chefchaouen from new heights, both literally and figuratively. It's amazing how a change in perspective can deepen your appreciation for a place. From mountain summits to ancient fortresses, every moment offered a fresh take on this enchanting blue city.

The day began with an early breakfast at MIDO'S. Maximilian and I fueled up with some hearty Moroccan pancakes and mint tea. I am still trying to adjust to the strong coffee here, so the mint tea has been my go to drink. The owner, a genuinely kind man, made sure we had everything we needed before our ascent. It's these small, personal touches that really make a place memorable. After breakfast, we started our hike up to Jebel El-Kelaa Summit.

The trail was a mix of gentle inclines and steeper paths, perfect for warming up. As we climbed, the panoramic views of the Rif Mountains began to unfold. The air was crisp and carried the scent of aromatic herbs, invigorating each step. It was a challenging trek, but so worth it for the breathtaking vistas. I must admit, I was a little out of breath at times, but Maximilian was a great encouragement, always reminding me to take in the beauty around us. I even managed to snap a few photos that I think will look great in my next blog post about hiking in Morocco!

Sometimes, the most beautiful views are found after the hardest climbs.

Reaching the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa was an incredible feeling. The 360-degree views of Chefchaouen and the surrounding valleys were simply mesmerizing. I could see the blue-washed buildings stretching out below us, like a vibrant tapestry woven into the landscape. It was a perfect moment to reflect on our journey so far and appreciate the beauty of this unique place. We spent some time at the top, taking photos and just soaking it all in. I even journaled a bit, capturing my thoughts and feelings about the experience. The descent offered fresh perspectives of the region, with the trail winding through diverse local vegetation.

After our hike, we made our way to the Kasbah.

This historic fortress, built in the 15th century, stands as a testament to Chefchaouen's rich history. Exploring the Kasbah felt like stepping back in time. The architecture is a remarkable example of Moroccan defensive design, and I was fascinated by the stories it held within its walls. We wandered through the ethnological museum, admiring the displays of traditional musical instruments, pottery, and embroidery. Each object offered a glimpse into the cultural heritage of the region. Climbing to the top of the Kasbah provided another stunning view of Chefchaouen, this time with a closer perspective on the blue medina. It was interesting to compare the views from the summit of Jebel El-Kelaa and the Kasbah, each offering a unique vantage point.

For lunch, we headed to Chez Foad, a local favorite known for its authentic Moroccan dishes.

The restaurant was bustling with locals, which is always a good sign. I ordered a tagine with chicken and olives, while Maximilian opted for the couscous. Both dishes were bursting with flavor, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to refuel after our morning adventures. The tagine was especially delicious, with tender chicken and a rich, savory sauce. I'm definitely going to try to recreate it when I get back to Heidelberg!

As the day drew to a close, we decided to experience the highly recommended Sunset at Sunset bar.

We arrived just in time to witness the sky ablaze with color as the sun dipped below the horizon. Sipping on refreshing cocktails, we watched as the blue walls of Chefchaouen transformed in the warm light. The atmosphere was relaxed and inviting, making it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring. I chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and tips about our adventures in Morocco. It's always inspiring to connect with people from different backgrounds and learn about their experiences.

For dinner, we chose Restaurant Dar El Salam, drawn in by its charming Moroccan decor and inviting atmosphere.

The menu featured a variety of traditional dishes, and we decided to try a few new things. I ordered the harira soup, a flavorful tomato-based soup with lentils and chickpeas, while Maximilian went for the kefta tagine, a meatball tagine with a rich tomato sauce. Both dishes were delicious, and the service was excellent. The staff was friendly and eager to recommend dishes that highlighted the best of local flavors. The ambiance of the restaurant was perfect for a relaxing evening, with soft lighting and traditional Moroccan music playing in the background.

Before heading back to Maison D'hôtes Afassi, we took a leisurely stroll through the medina.

The blue streets were even more magical at night, illuminated by the soft glow of lanterns. The air was filled with the sounds of laughter and music, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. I couldn't resist stopping at a few shops to browse the local handicrafts. I picked up a beautiful ceramic bowl and a handwoven scarf as souvenirs. It's always nice to bring back a little piece of the places I visit.

Tonight, as I sit here writing this blog post, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the experiences of the day. Chefchaouen has a way of captivating your heart and soul, and I'm so grateful to be able to share these moments with Maximilian and my friends. Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Grande Cascade D'akchour and Bab El Hammar. I'm excited to explore more of the natural beauty surrounding this enchanting city. I am also thinking of getting a small souvenir at Boutique andaluz before we leave to bring home to Hanna.
