Guardians of the Coast and Heights of Volcanoes
Day two on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula was nothing short of spectacular. The raw beauty of Iceland continued to unfold before my eyes, revealing dramatic coastlines, towering basalt formations, and panoramic volcanic landscapes. I ventured out early, eager to capture the essence of this magical region.
My first stop was Arnarstapi, a charming village known for its stunning coastal cliffs. I decided to grab breakfast at FRISTA Food Truck Arnarstapi. The food truck was conveniently located and offered delicious and quick bites, perfect for fueling up before exploring the area. I ordered a traditional Icelandic pastry and a cup of strong coffee, which I enjoyed while overlooking the serene harbor. It was a delightful way to start the day, surrounded by the crisp morning air and the gentle sounds of the sea. After a satisfying breakfast, I was ready to explore the coastal wonders of Arnarstapi.
The Arnarstapi Cliff Viewpoint offered breathtaking views of the rugged coastline. The basalt columns, carved over centuries by the relentless force of the North Atlantic Ocean, were a sight to behold. I spent a considerable amount of time simply standing there, camera in hand, trying to capture the intricate patterns and the sheer scale of these natural formations. The air was filled with the sound of crashing waves and the cries of seabirds, creating a symphony of nature that was both invigorating and calming.

Walking along the coastal trail, I reached Gatklettur, the iconic Arch Rock. This massive stone archway framed the ocean perfectly, offering a stunning vista of the sea and the distant Snæfellsjökull volcano. I could see why this spot is a favorite among photographers; the natural frame created by the arch is simply mesmerizing.
Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, like standing on the edge of the world, feeling the wind in your hair, and listening to the ocean's timeless song.
Next on the itinerary was Lóndrangar, the majestic basalt stacks that rise dramatically from the sea. As I drove towards the western tip of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, the landscape transformed into a vast, open expanse. The weather in this region can be quite variable, and today was no exception. The skies alternated between patches of sunshine and fleeting rain showers. Despite the unpredictable weather, the views were nothing short of spectacular.
Arriving at Lóndrangar, I parked the car and took the short walk to the viewpoint. The two basalt cliffs loomed large, standing like ancient sentinels guarding the coastline. The larger of the two peaks reaches a height of 75 meters, while the smaller stands at 61 meters. These imposing structures are remnants of a volcanic crater, shaped by centuries of erosion and the relentless pounding of the waves.

I found a cozy spot at Bjargarsteinn Mathús to have lunch. The restaurant is known for its delicious seafood and panoramic views of the coastline. I ordered the fish of the day, which was freshly caught cod, prepared with local herbs and served with roasted vegetables. The meal was absolutely delightful, and the stunning views made it even more memorable.
After lunch, I continued my journey towards Saxhóll Crater, a volcanic cinder cone that offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The drive to Saxhóll was scenic, passing through lava fields and moss-covered landscapes. As I approached the crater, I could see the staircase leading to the summit, a modern addition that makes the ascent relatively easy.
The climb to the top of Saxhóll Crater was invigorating. The staircase, though a bit steep in places, made the ascent manageable. As I climbed, I paused several times to catch my breath and take in the ever-expanding views. From the summit, the panorama was breathtaking. I could see the vast lava fields stretching towards the coastline, the distant Snæfellsjökull glacier, and the rugged beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

Saxhóll Crater is more than just a geological formation; it is a testament to Iceland's volcanic heritage. Formed over 3,000 years ago, the crater stands as a reminder of the powerful forces that have shaped this island. The experience of standing on the edge of the crater, feeling the wind and taking in the vastness of the landscape, was truly humbling.
After descending from Saxhóll Crater, I decided to treat myself to a nice dinner at Narfeyrarstofa. The restaurant is housed in a charming old building and is known for its traditional Icelandic cuisine with a modern twist. I ordered the lamb shank, which was slow-cooked to perfection and served with root vegetables and a rich gravy. The flavors were exquisite, and the cozy ambiance of the restaurant made it a perfect ending to a day of exploration.
Following dinner, I decided to check out the bar at Narfeyrarstofa for a nightcap. The bar had a great selection of local beers and spirits. I settled on a glass of Icelandic gin, which was infused with local herbs and had a unique, refreshing taste. As I sipped my drink, I reflected on the incredible experiences of the day. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula had truly exceeded my expectations, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, geological wonders, and cultural experiences.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Kirkjufell Mountain and Kirkjufellsfossar. I am also hoping to find some unique souvenirs at Kirkjufell knitting. As I prepare for another day of adventure, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to explore this remarkable corner of the world. The memories and experiences from today will undoubtedly stay with me long after I leave Iceland.
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula continues to captivate me with its diverse landscapes and unique charm. Each day brings new adventures and discoveries, reinforcing my love for solo travel and the freedom to explore at my own pace. As the sun sets over the Icelandic horizon, I am filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring.
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula has a magnetic pull, drawing me deeper into its embrace. It's a place where the forces of nature are on full display, shaping the land and the lives of those who call it home. As I continue my journey, I am reminded of the importance of sustainable travel and the need to protect these precious landscapes for future generations. I made sure to pack all my belongings and leave no trace behind, ensuring that others can enjoy the same pristine beauty that I have experienced.
The journey is far from over, and I am excited to see what other hidden gems and breathtaking vistas await me on this solo adventure through Iceland. Until tomorrow, bless.
