Chasing Fire and Water on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Today was a day of contrasts, a blend of fire and water that perfectly encapsulates the raw beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. I set out to explore some of the lesser-known gems of this region, places where the echoes of volcanic activity meet the serene flow of Icelandic waters. It's days like these that remind me why I started this blog – to share the magic found in the quiet corners of the world, away from the bustling tourist trails.

My first stop was the Eldborg Crater Trailhead. After a quick stop at Bónus to stock up on some snacks, I felt ready to tackle the hike. The drive there was stunning, with the landscape transforming into a vast lava field. It was a stark reminder of Iceland's volcanic nature. The trailhead itself was easy to find, and I was pleased to see ample parking space. The hike to Eldborg Crater is about 6 kilometers round trip. Though classified as easy, it had its challenges, with a mix of smooth footpaths and rocky stretches. The weather was kind, thankfully, as I could imagine it could get muddy in wet conditions.
As I started my ascent, the landscape opened up, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. The trail was well-marked, making it easy to navigate. The climb to the crater rim involved a steep section, but chains were installed to aid hikers. I found these particularly helpful, especially with my camera gear weighing me down. It was a good thing I remembered to bring my hiking boots; they provided the necessary grip on the rocky terrain.
Reaching the top of Eldborg Crater was a truly rewarding experience. The view from the rim was breathtaking – a vast lava field stretching out in all directions, with the perfectly formed crater in the foreground. I took my time to walk around the rim, soaking in the views and snapping photos. The sheer scale of the crater was humbling, a testament to the powerful forces that shaped this island.

The earth has music for those who listen.

After Eldborg, I was ready for lunch. I drove to Stykkishólmur, a charming town known for its colorful houses and harbor views, and grabbed a bite at Agnið streetfood. I decided to try their fish tacos, which were delicious and fresh. The staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was lively. It was a perfect spot for a quick and satisfying meal. It’s always great to support local businesses, and Agnið streetfood seemed like a real culinary gem.
With renewed energy, I set off to find Bæjarfoss, a waterfall I had read about that's often described as underrated. The drive to Ólafsvík, where Bæjarfoss is located, was scenic, with the road winding along the coastline. Bæjarfoss is easily accessible from Ólafsvík, and there's a short, safe hiking path leading to it. The walk was easy, about 10 minutes, and suitable for all fitness levels.
Bæjarfoss wasn't a towering waterfall, but it had a unique charm. It’s more of a vertical river cascading down the rocks. The surrounding landscape was beautiful, with the ocean providing a stunning backdrop. I spent some time taking photos and simply enjoying the tranquility of the place. It was a peaceful escape, far from the crowds of the more famous waterfalls.

For dinner, I decided to try Hverinn - Restaurant & Bar, located in Kleppjárnsreykir. The restaurant is known for its cozy atmosphere and home-grown vegetables. It's family-run, and you can feel the warmth and care that goes into the place. I ordered the fish and chips, which were light and crispy. I also tried the mushroom soup, which was delicious and flavorful. The owners were incredibly friendly and accommodating, making the dining experience even more enjoyable.
Before heading back to my guesthouse, I made a detour to explore some of the lava rock formations along the Snæfellsnesvegur route. These formations are a testament to Iceland's volcanic activity, with dramatic rock structures and unique textures. The interplay of light and shadows on the black rock was mesmerizing, creating an otherworldly landscape. I lost track of time as I wandered through the formations, marveling at the forces of nature that shaped this unique environment. Other lava fields in the area include Budahraun and Berserkjahraun.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the incredible variety of experiences I had. From hiking a volcanic crater to discovering a hidden waterfall and exploring surreal lava formations, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula had once again exceeded my expectations. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Álftafjörður and visit the Lóndrangar View Point and Gatklettur. I'm excited to see what other hidden gems this peninsula holds. I'm also planning on having breakfast at Kaffi 59, lunch at Skurinn, and dinner at Hlaðan Veitingahús, and maybe a drink at Kaffi 59, if I'm not too tired from all the exploring. It’s days like these that remind me why I love traveling solo – the freedom to explore at my own pace, to discover hidden gems, and to connect with nature in a profound way. And, of course, to share these experiences with all of you. Good night from Iceland!
