Solo Exploration of Cusco: A Journey Through Incan History
Day 11: Cosmic Wonders and Ancient Rituals: Exploring Cusco's Hidden Gems
Delve into the mysteries of Inca astronomy at Cusco Planetarium and uncover ancient rituals at Q'enco, a day of celestial and earthly wonders.
Under the Stars and Among the Stones
Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took me from the vast expanse of the cosmos to the intricate stonework of ancient rituals. Cusco continues to surprise me with its ability to seamlessly blend the celestial with the terrestrial, offering glimpses into both the mysteries of the universe and the profound spirituality of the Inca civilization. It was a day of exploration that fed my soul and left me pondering the interconnectedness of everything.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at LOCAL Restaurante. I always appreciate a good start to the day, especially knowing I'd be doing a lot of walking. LOCAL Restaurante is a charming spot, and I enjoyed a traditional Peruvian breakfast that gave me the energy I needed for the day's adventures. I savored every bite, thinking about how different this experience was from my usual mornings in Heidelberg, where I often rush through breakfast before diving into translation work.

First on the agenda was the Cusco Planetarium. After breakfast, I made my way to the planetarium, eager to learn about Inca astronomy. The planetarium is nestled in the hills surrounding Cusco, offering stunning views of the city below. The journey there was an adventure in itself, winding through narrow streets and past traditional adobe homes. I couldn't help but think of Hanna and how much she would have loved this part of the trip. She's always been fascinated by stars and planets, and I made a mental note to bring her a souvenir related to astronomy.

The Cusco Planetarium is a unique and intimate experience. It's family-run, which adds a personal touch to the visit. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about sharing the Inca's understanding of the cosmos. We started with a presentation inside a small, cozy dome where we learned about the constellations visible in the Southern Hemisphere and how the Incas used the stars for agriculture, navigation, and religious ceremonies. It was fascinating to discover how deeply intertwined their lives were with the celestial world. They viewed the night sky not just as a backdrop, but as an integral part of their existence.
The universe is not outside of you. Look inside yourself; everything that you want, you already are.
After the presentation, we ventured outside to observe the night sky through telescopes. Unfortunately, the clouds decided to make an appearance, obscuring our view of the stars. However, the guides were quick to adapt, sharing stories and legends about Inca cosmology. They explained how the Incas saw constellations in the dark patches of the Milky Way, identifying shapes of animals and mythical beings. It was a testament to their ingenuity and their ability to find meaning in the seemingly random patterns of the universe. Despite the cloudy conditions, the enthusiasm and knowledge of the guides made the experience truly memorable. I even managed to snap a few photos of the landscape, though the stars remained elusive.
Next on the itinerary was the Q'enco Archaeological Complex. From the planetarium, I took a taxi to Q'enco, an ancient Inca site known for its intricate stonework and underground chambers. The name Q'enco means labyrinth in Quechua, which is fitting considering the complex network of tunnels and passages carved into the rock.

Q'enco is believed to have been a religious site where the Incas performed rituals and ceremonies. As I walked through the complex, I was struck by the precision and skill of the Inca stonemasons. The site is carved entirely from natural rock formations, seamlessly blending with the surrounding landscape. I explored the various chambers and tunnels, imagining what it must have been like to participate in the ancient rituals that took place here.
One of the most intriguing features of Q'enco is the underground chamber known as the Sacrifice Chamber. It's a small, enclosed space with carved stone tables and niches, believed to have been used for offerings and sacrifices. The atmosphere inside the chamber was heavy with a sense of history and mystery. It was easy to imagine the Inca priests performing their sacred rites, seeking guidance and blessings from the gods.
As I wandered through Q'enco, I couldn't help but reflect on the contrasts between the Inca civilization and our modern world. They had a deep connection to nature and the cosmos, living in harmony with their environment and finding meaning in the cycles of the seasons. In contrast, we often seem disconnected from the natural world, caught up in the hustle and bustle of modern life.
After exploring Q'enco, I was ready for lunch. I headed to Sepia Cusco, a restaurant known for its fusion cuisine. I enjoyed a delicious meal that combined traditional Peruvian flavors with modern culinary techniques. It was a delightful experience that satisfied both my hunger and my curiosity.

In the afternoon, I decided to do some shopping at TEXTILES POMATAYLLA. I wanted to find a special souvenir to take back home, something that would remind me of my time in Cusco. TEXTILES POMATAYLLA is a charming clothing store that showcases a stunning array of handcrafted garments and accessories. I spent hours browsing through the collection, admiring the intricate weaving and vibrant colors. I finally settled on a beautiful alpaca scarf, which I knew would be perfect for the chilly German winters.

For dinner, I chose Rucula Peruvian Restaurant. I wanted to try some authentic Peruvian cuisine, and Rucula came highly recommended. I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff was friendly and attentive. I ordered a traditional Peruvian dish, which was bursting with flavor and spices. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Inka Museum and the Coca Museum. I'm excited to delve deeper into the history and traditions of the Inca civilization. I'm also looking forward to trying some local coca tea, which is said to help with altitude sickness. And in the evening, I'm planning to unwind at Molly's Irish Bar and Restaurant Cusco, a popular spot known for its lively atmosphere and delicious drinks.
As I settle in for the night, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the adventures that await me in the days to come. Cusco has captured my heart, and I'm eager to explore every corner of this enchanting city.
The blend of modern life with ancient history continues to fascinate me. I am reminded of a quote I once read in Gyeongju, my hometown:
We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.
It resonates deeply with my experiences here, highlighting the importance of preserving our history and culture for future generations. Good night from Cusco!
