Solo Exploration of Cusco: A Journey Through Incan History
Day 10: Sacred Valley Secrets: Unearthing Inca History in Ollantaytambo and Chinchero
Journey through Ollantaytambo and Chinchero, unraveling ancient Incan mysteries and vibrant traditions in the heart of Peru's Sacred Valley.
Echoes of the Inca Empire
Today was a deep dive into the heart of the Sacred Valley, a day filled with ancient stones, breathtaking views, and whispers of a civilization that continues to captivate the world. From the formidable terraces of Ollantaytambo to the vibrant markets of Chinchero, I felt like I was walking through the pages of history, each site revealing a new layer of the Inca story.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Jonas Restaurant Cusco. It had been recommended to me by a fellow traveler I met at Polo Cusco Suites, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

Fueled up for the day, I set off early for Ollantaytambo Sanctuary, eager to explore its towering ruins. The drive itself was stunning, with the Andes Mountains providing a majestic backdrop. The air was crisp and clean, a welcome change from the city bustle. I made sure to bring my travel journal and a pen, as I wanted to record all my thoughts and observations of the day. I also charged my camera to full battery, as I knew I would want to take lots of pictures.

Ollantaytambo is more than just an archaeological site; it's a living testament to Inca ingenuity and resilience. As I climbed the steep terraces, I couldn't help but marvel at the precision of the stonework. Each stone, perfectly fitted without mortar, spoke volumes about the Incas' advanced engineering skills. The sheer scale of the structures was awe-inspiring. It's hard to imagine how they moved these massive stones into place without modern machinery. Apparently, they carved the stone into large blocks using only primitive tools and transported the blocks up to the mountain using a system of pulleys and ropes, fitting the blocks together using a technique called “ashlar,” in which each block is cut to interlock with the ones around it.
Wandering through the complex, I learned that Ollantaytambo was once a royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti. Later, it served as a stronghold for Manco Inca Yupanqui during the Spanish conquest. The Incas even managed to defeat the Spanish here in 1537, a rare victory that filled me with a sense of pride. Standing on the upper terraces, I could see the strategic importance of the site, with its commanding views of the surrounding valley. The Incas were not only skilled builders but also brilliant military strategists.
To truly appreciate the grandeur of the Inca civilization, one must immerse oneself in the landscapes they shaped and the stories etched in stone.
After spending several hours exploring Ollantaytambo, I made my way to Chinchero, a charming town known for its archaeological site and traditional market. The Centro Arqueológico de Chinchero is located about 30 kilometers from Cusco.

Chinchero is built on the ruins of a town belonging to the pre-Inca Ayamarca culture. The town is known as the city of the Rainbow and is surrounded by snow-capped mountains: Salkantay, Verónica and Soray, as well as lagoons such as Piuray and Huaypo. Like Ollantaytambo, Chinchero boasts impressive Inca ruins, including agricultural terraces and remnants of what was believed to be Emperor Túpac Yupanqui's palace. What struck me most was the blend of Inca and colonial architecture. The Spanish built the Church of Nuestra Señora de Monserrat atop Inca foundations, a stark reminder of the cultural collision that shaped Peru's history. The church houses a collection of paintings by the Cusco artist Diego Quispe Tito.
The Chinchero market was a sensory overload in the best way possible. The air was filled with the scent of colorful textiles, freshly baked bread, and exotic spices. Local artisans proudly displayed their handwoven creations, each piece a unique expression of their cultural heritage. I couldn't resist purchasing a beautiful alpaca scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind me of my time in the Sacred Valley. I also picked up some local coca tea, hoping it would help with the altitude as I continue my travels. I remember when Maximilian and I first visited Korea together, and I took him to the local markets. It was a similar experience, a sensory overload of new sights and smells.
For lunch, I stopped at PER.UK, a restaurant that a friend from Heidelberg had raved about.

It was a delightful fusion of Peruvian and British cuisine. I savored a vegan ceviche that was incredibly fresh. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant had a relaxed atmosphere. I made sure to write a positive review on HappyCow, as I always appreciate finding vegan-friendly options while traveling.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the Sacred Valley, I made my way back to Cusco. I decided to treat myself to dinner at El Duende Resto Lounge, drawn in by its cozy ambiance and promise of traditional Peruvian dishes.

The restaurant was in Cusco's Centro Histórico and had a vibrant atmosphere. I enjoyed a flavorful Ají de Gallina while listening to live music. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration.
Before heading back to Polo Cusco Suites, I decided to check out Papacho Bar Cultural.

I had read online that it was a great place to relax and enjoy a drink. The bar had a calm atmosphere and played good music. I ordered a Pisco Sour, a must-try cocktail in Peru, and reflected on the day's adventures. It was a day filled with history, culture, and natural beauty, a day that deepened my appreciation for the Inca civilization and the wonders of the Sacred Valley.
As I write this, back in my cozy room at Polo Cusco Suites, I'm already anticipating tomorrow's itinerary. I'm planning to visit the Cusco Planetarium and the Q'enco Archaeological Complex. I'm also looking forward to trying out LOCAL Restaurante for breakfast and Sepia Cusco for lunch. And, if I have time, I might do some shopping at TEXTILES POMATAYLLA. I feel so grateful for this opportunity to explore Peru and share my experiences with all of you. Good night from Cusco!
