First Impressions of Cusco: A City Steeped in History

Arriving in Cusco felt like stepping into a living history book. The air is thin, a reminder of the altitude, but the energy of the city is palpable. Today, my exploration began in the heart of Cusco, a place where Incan history and Spanish colonial influence blend seamlessly. I'm eager to share my first day’s adventures, filled with cultural immersion and culinary delights.

My day started early, fueled by anticipation and a hearty breakfast at El Jardin - Healthy Food And Coffee. It was a charming spot, the perfect place to gather my thoughts and prepare for the day ahead. I savored a delicious blend of local flavors, setting the tone for a day of exploration and discovery. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day in this vibrant city. It reminded me of the cozy cafes back in Heidelberg, where Maximilian and I often spend our Sunday mornings.

Plaza Mayor: The Heart of Cusco

The Plaza Mayor, also known as Plaza de Armas, was my first official stop. This central square is the historical and cultural heart of Cusco, a place where the city's vibrant life unfolds. The square is surrounded by remarkable architecture, including the impressive Cusco Cathedral and the Colonial-era Church of La Compañía de Jesús. The intricate designs and rich history of these buildings are captivating. Walking through the plaza, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the blend of Incan and Spanish influences.

The Plaza Mayor was bustling with activity. Locals and tourists mingled, creating a lively atmosphere. I watched as children chased pigeons, vendors sold colorful textiles, and couples strolled hand in hand. The energy of the square was infectious, and I found myself smiling as I soaked it all in. It was a perfect introduction to the city, a place where the past and present coexist in harmony. The flower beds were meticulously maintained, adding a splash of color to the already vibrant scene. The gentle sound of the fountain in the center of the square provided a soothing backdrop to the lively chatter of the crowd.

I took some time to sit on one of the benches, simply observing the world around me. It was a perfect spot for people-watching, and I enjoyed seeing the diverse mix of faces and cultures that converged in this central location. I noticed several families, likely tourists, marveling at the architecture and taking photos. It reminded me of when I first brought Hanna to see the Heidelberg Castle; her eyes were wide with wonder, just like the children here.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning you didn't even think to ask.

After soaking in the atmosphere of the Plaza Mayor, I decided to explore the surrounding area. I wandered through the narrow cobblestone streets, admiring the colonial architecture and peeking into the various shops and cafes. I found a charming little shop selling handmade jewelry and couldn't resist buying a delicate silver necklace with a small jade pendant. It reminded me of my Korean heritage, a little piece of home to carry with me on my travels. The shop owner was a friendly woman who shared stories about her craft and the history of jade in Peru. It was a lovely interaction that added a personal touch to my souvenir.

For lunch, I headed to Organika Restaurant, a place recommended by several locals. The restaurant focused on fresh, organic ingredients, and the menu was filled with delicious and healthy options. I ordered a quinoa salad with local vegetables, and it was absolutely divine. The flavors were vibrant and fresh, a true taste of Peru. The ambiance of the restaurant was relaxed and inviting, a perfect place to recharge after a morning of exploring. It was interesting to see how traditional Andean ingredients were being incorporated into modern culinary creations.

Qorikancha: The Golden Temple

In the afternoon, I made my way to Qorikancha, also known as the Temple of the Sun. This was one of the most important temples in the Inca Empire, and it was once covered in gold. Although much of the gold was taken by the Spanish conquistadors, the remaining stonework is still incredibly impressive. The precision and skill of the Inca builders are evident in every stone, a testament to their advanced engineering abilities.

The temple was a place of great reverence and spiritual significance for the Incas. It was dedicated to the worship of the sun god, Inti, and was the center of religious life in the empire. As I walked through the temple grounds, I could feel the weight of history and the spiritual energy of the place. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the rich and complex civilization that once thrived here.

Today, Qorikancha is also home to the Convent of Santo Domingo, a Spanish colonial church built on top of the Inca temple. This juxtaposition of Incan and Spanish architecture is striking, a visual representation of the cultural collision that occurred in Peru. I found myself reflecting on the complexities of colonialism and the ways in which different cultures can coexist, sometimes harmoniously and sometimes not.

I spent several hours exploring Qorikancha, wandering through the temple ruins and admiring the colonial church. I learned about the history of the temple from a local guide, who shared fascinating stories about the Inca civilization and their beliefs. The guide's passion for his culture was infectious, and I found myself even more captivated by the history of this remarkable place. He explained how the temple was once adorned with gold statues and precious stones, a testament to the wealth and power of the Inca Empire.

After visiting Qorikancha, I decided to do a little shopping at Real Plaza Cusco. It was a modern shopping mall, a stark contrast to the historical sites I had visited earlier in the day. I picked up a few souvenirs for Hanna and Maximilian, little reminders of my trip to Peru. It's always nice to bring something back for them, a way to share my experiences even when I'm far away. I found a beautiful hand-painted wooden toy for Hanna and a cozy alpaca scarf for Maximilian.

Dinner at Chicha por Gaston Acurio

For dinner, I had made a reservation at Chicha por Gaston Acurio, a restaurant known for its modern take on traditional Peruvian cuisine. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a testament to its popularity. I ordered a selection of dishes, including ceviche, lomo saltado, and causa, each one bursting with flavor. The presentation of the food was impeccable, a work of art in itself. The meal was a true culinary experience, a celebration of Peruvian gastronomy.

As I savored each bite, I reflected on my first day in Cusco. It had been a day filled with exploration, discovery, and cultural immersion. I had walked through ancient temples, wandered through bustling plazas, and tasted the flavors of Peru. It was a day that had awakened my senses and deepened my appreciation for this remarkable city.

Tomorrow, I plan to visit Saqsaywaman and the San Blas View Point. I’m looking forward to exploring more of Cusco's historical sites and natural beauty. I might even stop by Sassy Bar & Lounge for a nightcap! I'm also eager to experience more of the local cuisine. Perhaps I'll try Pachapapa for lunch, I've heard great things about it. I’m also considering visiting one of the local markets, like San Pedro Market, to experience the local culture firsthand. I hear it's a feast for the senses, offering everything from fresh produce to handmade crafts. It’s supposed to be one of the most authentic markets in Cusco, and I’m excited to explore its colorful aisles and sample some traditional Andean flavors.

Back at Polo Cusco Suites, I’m already looking forward to another day of adventure. Cusco has captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings. I feel so grateful for this opportunity to explore a new culture and share my experiences with all of you. It's moments like these that remind me why I love to travel, to learn, and to connect with people from all walks of life.

Before drifting off to sleep, I made sure to jot down my experiences in my travel journal. It's a habit I've developed over the years, a way to preserve my memories and reflect on my adventures. I also made a note to buy a Spanish phrasebook tomorrow. I realized that while many people in Cusco speak English, knowing a few basic Spanish phrases would greatly enhance my interactions with the locals. It's a small gesture of respect that can go a long way.

As I closed my eyes, I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for the days to come. Cusco is a city that has so much to offer, and I'm eager to uncover its hidden gems and share them with you. Stay tuned for more adventures from this captivating corner of the world!
