Whispers of the Past, Views of the Present

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey through time that took me from the imposing ruins of Saqsaywaman to the bohemian streets of San Blas. It was a day filled with history, art, and the vibrant spirit of Cusco. I started my day eager to absorb more of this city's rich heritage, and I ended it feeling deeply connected to its past and present.

The morning began with a delightful breakfast at Cicciolina. The aroma of freshly baked bread and the promise of cage-free eggs were too enticing to resist. It was a cozy start to what promised to be a day of exploration. I savored every bite, knowing I needed the energy for the adventures ahead.

Fueled and ready, I set off to explore Saqsaywaman. The name itself, meaning 'Royal Eagle' or 'Satisfied Falcon' depending on who you ask, hints at the majesty of this place. As I approached the site, the scale of the stonework was simply breathtaking. These massive walls, built by the Incas in the 15th century, were constructed with stones weighing over 100 tons, fitted together with such precision that no mortar was needed. It's truly a marvel of engineering and a testament to the ingenuity of the Inca civilization.

Wandering through the ruins, I imagined what life must have been like here centuries ago. Saqsaywaman was more than just a fortress; it was a temple, a storage depot, and a ceremonial site. I learned that it even played a crucial role during the Spanish conquest, serving as a stronghold for the Inca resistance. Standing on the elevated rocky promontory, I could see why it was such a strategically important location. The views of Cusco spread out below were simply stunning, a reminder of the power and vision of the Inca rulers.

The stones of Saqsaywaman whisper tales of a civilization that mastered the art of blending architecture with the natural landscape, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire awe.

After immersing myself in the grandeur of Saqsaywaman, I decided to explore the artistic heart of Cusco: the San Blas neighborhood. This bohemian district is known for its narrow, cobblestone streets, its art galleries, and its vibrant community of artisans. As I climbed the steep Cuesta de San Blas, I was rewarded with charming views of the city's red-tiled roofs and blue-painted balconies.

My first stop in San Blas was the San Blas View Point. From here, the panorama of Cusco was even more captivating. The city unfolded beneath me like a tapestry, its ancient streets and colonial buildings blending seamlessly together. I took a moment to simply soak it all in, feeling grateful for the opportunity to witness such beauty.

For lunch, I ventured to Pachapapa, a restaurant known for its traditional Cusquenian cuisine. The restaurant is set in a beautiful old mansion with a rustic courtyard, complete with a wood-fired oven. I opted for the *aji de gallina*, a classic Peruvian dish, and a refreshing *chicha morada*, a local non-alcoholic drink made from purple corn. The food was delicious, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting.

As I savored my meal, I couldn't help but think about Maximilian and Hanna. They would have loved this place! I made a mental note to bring them here someday, to share the flavors and the atmosphere of this special corner of Cusco. I also remembered that I had forgotten to pack an umbrella and a Spanish phrasebook, which I will need to buy tomorrow, before visiting Museo Casa Concha and the Twelve Angled Stone.

With my belly full and my spirit renewed, I spent the afternoon wandering through the streets of San Blas, popping into art galleries and artisan workshops. I was particularly drawn to a small shop selling handmade textiles, where I purchased a colorful scarf as a souvenir for Hanna. I could picture her wearing it, her eyes sparkling with delight.

As evening approached, I made my way to LIMBUS RESTOBAR for dinner. I had heard that this place offered not only delicious food but also some of the best views in Cusco. And it did not disappoint! The restaurant is perched on a hillside overlooking the city, and the panorama was simply breathtaking.

I ordered the *anticuchos*, traditional charcoal-grilled beef heart, and a *Limbus Bitter*, an experimental pisco drink. The food was flavorful, and the drink was a perfect complement to the stunning view. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive, making me feel right at home.

After dinner, I decided to check out Sassy Bar & Lounge. I was in the mood for some music and a bit of local nightlife. The bar had a lively atmosphere, with a mix of locals and tourists enjoying the music and the drinks. I sipped on a cocktail and soaked in the energy of the place, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience Cusco's vibrant nightlife.

As I walked back to Polo Cusco Suites, the city was bathed in the soft glow of streetlights. The air was crisp and cool, and the stars twinkled in the night sky. I couldn't help but smile, feeling content and fulfilled. Today had been a day of discovery, a journey through time and culture that had touched my heart and soul.

Tomorrow, I plan to explore more of Cusco's historical treasures, including the Museo Casa Concha and the Twelve Angled Stone. I'm also looking forward to trying the vegan cuisine at Green Point Vegan Restaurant and browsing the handicrafts at the Handicraft Center Cusco. But for now, I'm content to simply savor the memories of today, the echoes of the Incas and the vibrant spirit of San Blas.

As I reflect on my day, I realize that travel is not just about seeing new places; it's about connecting with the people, the history, and the culture of those places. It's about opening our hearts and minds to new experiences and allowing ourselves to be transformed by them. And it's about creating memories that will last a lifetime. Tonight, I am thankful for the memories I made today, and I am excited for the adventures that await me tomorrow.

The weather today was mild, with light rain in the afternoon. I was glad I had packed my comfortable walking shoes and my lightweight clothing, although I wished I had remembered my umbrella! I will definitely need to buy one tomorrow.

I am looking forward to continue exploring Cusco and sharing my experiences with you all. Stay tuned for more tales from this magical city!

I think back to my childhood in Gyeongju, South Korea, a city also steeped in history and tradition. Perhaps that's why I feel such a strong connection to Cusco. Both cities are living museums, where the past is always present, shaping the future. This trip is not just a vacation for me; it's a pilgrimage, a journey to connect with my roots and to discover new ones.

And now, as the day comes to an end, I am filled with anticipation for what tomorrow will bring. Goodnight from Cusco!
