Echoes of the Inca Capital

Today was a deep dive into the heart of Cusco, a day filled with history, culture, and the vibrant flavors of Peru. I started with a visit to a museum that showcased artifacts from Machu Picchu, followed by an exploration of ancient stonework and finishing the day with a culinary tour of some of Cusco's finest restaurants. It was a day of discovery, and I'm excited to share it all.

My morning began with a hearty vegan breakfast at Green Point Vegan Restaurant. I opted for a traditional Peruvian breakfast but with a plant-based twist, which was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The restaurant itself was a peaceful oasis, a garden filled with lush plants and the promise of delicious, cruelty-free food. It reminded me of the small garden Max and I keep on our balcony back in Heidelberg, though theirs had a distinctly Peruvian charm.

After breakfast, I headed to the Museo Casa Concha, also known as the Machu Picchu Museum. This museum houses an impressive collection of artifacts recovered from Machu Picchu, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Inca people. As a translator, I found myself particularly drawn to the intricate details of the pottery and textiles, each piece telling a story of a civilization that thrived in these mountains centuries ago. The Casa Concha itself is a beautiful example of colonial architecture, built on the foundations of an Inca palace. The blend of indigenous and Spanish influences is evident throughout the building, a visual representation of the complex history of Cusco.

Wandering through the museum, I couldn't help but imagine what life must have been like in Machu Picchu. The artifacts on display—tools, pottery, and even human remains—painted a vivid picture of a society deeply connected to the land and its gods. It was humbling to stand in the presence of such history, knowing that these objects were once part of the daily lives of people who walked the same paths I was now walking.

To truly understand a place, you must walk its streets, taste its food, and listen to its stories.

Leaving the museum, I made my way to the legendary Twelve Angled Stone. This iconic stone is part of a wall that once belonged to the palace of Inca Roca, and it’s a testament to the incredible skill and precision of Inca stonemasons. Each of the twelve angles fits perfectly with the surrounding stones, without the use of mortar. It’s an architectural marvel that has stood for centuries, a symbol of the ingenuity and resilience of the Inca people. I spent some time admiring the stone, marveling at the way it seamlessly integrated into the wall. It’s hard to believe that such a complex structure could have been built without modern tools, a true testament to the skill and artistry of the Inca civilization.

As I stood there, surrounded by other tourists and locals alike, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe. The Twelve Angled Stone is more than just a rock; it’s a symbol of Cusco’s rich history and cultural heritage. It’s a reminder of the people who came before us, and the incredible things they were able to achieve.

After immersing myself in history and architecture, it was time for lunch. I decided to try Nuna Raymi, a restaurant known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine with a modern twist. The restaurant has an active commitment to working with local producers, emphasizing companies led by young entrepreneurs. I opted for a vegetarian version of Lomo Saltado, a classic Peruvian dish made with stir-fried vegetables, rice, and potatoes. The flavors were incredible, a perfect blend of savory and sweet, and the presentation was beautiful. It was a delicious and satisfying meal that left me feeling energized for the rest of the day.

With my stomach full and my spirits high, I decided to indulge in some shopping at the Handicraft Center Cusco. This sprawling market is a treasure trove of local crafts, from textiles and jewelry to pottery and wood carvings. I wandered through the maze of stalls, admiring the colorful displays and chatting with the artisans. I was particularly drawn to the textiles, with their intricate patterns and vibrant colors. I ended up buying a beautiful alpaca scarf, a perfect souvenir to remind me of my time in Cusco. The Handicraft Center was huge, almost an entire block, with stalls selling clothing, jewelry, food and other items. I even found some exotic fruits I'd never seen before!

As I explored, I imagined bringing Hanna here one day. She would absolutely love the bright colors and the intricate designs. Perhaps I could even find a small alpaca doll for her, a cuddly reminder of our adventures in Peru.

For dinner, I decided to try Fuego, Burgers and Barbecue Restaurant, a place that came highly recommended for its unique blend of American barbecue and Peruvian flavors. I ordered a vegetarian burger with a side of yucca fries, a delicious and satisfying meal that was the perfect end to a long day of exploring. The restaurant had a lively atmosphere, with live music and a friendly crowd. The fusion of flavors was unexpected but delicious, a testament to Cusco's vibrant culinary scene.

As I enjoyed my burger, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the ancient artifacts at Museo Casa Concha to the architectural marvel of the Twelve Angled Stone, Cusco had revealed its secrets to me, one layer at a time. The city’s rich history and vibrant culture had captivated me, and I knew that I would never forget my time here. The blend of old and new, indigenous and Spanish, made Cusco a truly unique and unforgettable destination.

Tomorrow, I’m planning a trip to the Sacred Valley and Pisac. I’ve heard that the landscapes are breathtaking and the markets are full of unique treasures. I’m excited to explore more of this beautiful region and discover even more of its hidden gems. I plan to start the day with breakfast at KUSYKAY Peruvian Craft Food, followed by lunch at A Mi Manera and dinner at Mistura Grill Cusco. I'm also hoping to do some shopping at La Galeria Cusco.

As I head back to Polo Cusco Suites, I feel grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible city. Cusco has exceeded all of my expectations, and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings. I am also glad that I decided to come alone. It has given me time for introspection and to appreciate the beauty and history of this place without any distractions. I am already looking forward to sharing my experiences with Max and Hanna when I return to Heidelberg.
