The Citadel of Herat, or Qala Ikhtyaruddin, stands as a silent sentinel over the city, its origins shrouded in the mists of time [4, 7]. It is believed that Alexander the Great first established a fort here around 330 BC, after conquering the ancient Persian town of Artacoana [5, 6, 9].
