Herat Citadel: A Timeless Fortress

The Citadel of Herat, or Qala Ikhtyaruddin, stands as a silent sentinel over the city, its origins shrouded in the mists of time [4, 7]. It is believed that Alexander the Great first established a fort here around 330 BC, after conquering the ancient Persian town of Artacoana [5, 6, 9]. Over the next two millennia, empires rose and fell, each leaving their mark on the Citadel [6]. Destroyed and rebuilt numerous times, it has served as a headquarters for armies, a royal residence, and even a prison [4, 7]. The present structure largely dates back to 1415, when Shah Rukh, son of Timur, rebuilt it after Timur's destruction [4, 5, 9]. The Citadel's imposing walls, rising over 30 meters, and its 18 towers have watched over Herat's successes and setbacks for centuries [4]. A poem in monumental Kufic script once adorned the exterior, proclaiming the castle's grandeur [4]. Although time has taken its toll, remnants of this tilework can still be seen on the northwest wall, known as the 'Timurid Tower' [4].
