Discover more about Hubert Richter Chapel - The Tiny Church.

Nestled in the heart of Cullman, Alabama, the Hubert Richter Chapel, often called 'The Tiny Church,' presents a captivating mix of architectural charm and heartfelt history. More than a building, it stands as a living memorial, a testament to love, loss, and community spirit. Located at 419 1st Avenue SE, the chapel welcomes visitors with its inviting facade, promising a moment of peace and reflection. The chapel's story is deeply intertwined with the Richter family. In 1971, tragedy struck when Mike Richter, son of Hubert and Hazel Richter, died in an accident. Years later, in 1988, Hubert Richter passed away following a traffic accident. Hazel Richter, inspired by her late husband's wish for a church that would always be open, envisioned a small chapel as a memorial. Built in October 1989 through community donations, the chapel embodies collaboration and shared remembrance. The community raised $13,000 to bring this vision to life. Daniel Richter, Hubert's youngest son, designed the chapel based on Hazel's notes and measurements from small chapels in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Brad Edison's company constructed the chapel, ensuring a place of beauty and tranquility. The chapel's architecture exudes a dollhouse-like charm, yet it maintains an adult scale, creating a welcoming space. Inside, a stunning stained-glass window featuring a dove graces the space, commissioned by the Richters. Ron Wolf, a Cullman designer, whitewashed the interior and exterior and designed the brick walkway in the shape of a cross. Benches are placed outside for contemplation. The chapel is non-denominational, welcoming people of all faiths to find peace and comfort. Its doors are always open, fulfilling Hubert's dream of a church that never closes.
