Cullman, Alabama, was founded in 1873 by Colonel Johann Gottfried Cullmann, a German immigrant. Cullmann was an agent for the North and South Railroad, and he envisioned creating a colony for German immigrants in the South. He chose the area due to its fertile land and temperate climate, which would be ideal for farming and settlement.

The German heritage of Cullman is deeply ingrained in its culture and architecture.
