Majestic Caverns: Alabama's Underground Wonderland

Majestic Caverns invites visitors to explore a subterranean world steeped in history and natural beauty [3]. The caverns have a long and storied past, serving as a burial site for the early Native American Copena culture around 0 AD [1, 8]. Caves were ideal burial locations for the Copena people because they provided a tranquil and protective environment for the spirits of the deceased [1, 8]. Archaeological excavations in 1963 uncovered the skeletons of five Native Americans, including a child [1, 8]. In 1796, George Stiggens, a presidential agent, documented the cave's beauty in a letter to President George Washington, marking it as the first cavern on record in the United States [3, 6]. During the Civil War, the Confederate Army utilized the cave as a saltpeter-mining center, a crucial ingredient for gunpowder [1, 8]. In the early 1960s, the Mathis family began developing the caverns into a show cave, installing electric lights to highlight the colorful onyx formations [1]. Initially opened as KyMulga Onyx Cave, it was later renamed DeSoto Caverns in 1976 to honor Hernando de Soto [1]. In June 2022, the park was renamed Majestic Caverns [1].
