Tucked away on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama, the Ave Maria Grotto offers a captivating journey through a miniature world of religious and architectural wonders. This unique four-acre park showcases the remarkable work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk who dedicated nearly 50 years to constructing over 125 miniature replicas of famous churches, shrines, and landmarks from around the globe.Born in Bavaria in 1878, Brother Joseph immigrated to America and joined St. Bernard Abbey in 1892. Despite being unable to become a priest due to a physical disability, he found his calling in creating these intricate miniatures. Using simple tools, donated materials, and his vivid imagination, Brother Joseph meticulously crafted each structure from stone, cement, and an assortment of found objects like marbles, seashells, and broken glass.The grotto opened in 1934 and quickly became a beloved attraction, drawing visitors from near and far. As you stroll along the winding pathways, you'll encounter miniature versions of iconic landmarks such as St. Peter's Basilica, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Tower of Babel, and the Alamo. Many of the miniatures depict scenes and structures from the Bible and the Holy Land, reflecting Brother Joseph's deep spiritual devotion.The Ave Maria Grotto is more than just a collection of miniatures; it's a testament to the power of faith, creativity, and the beauty that can be found in simple materials. The grotto was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1976 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Brother Joseph Zoettl is buried in the Abbey cemetery.
