Ave Maria Grotto: Jerusalem in Miniature

Nestled on the grounds of St. Bernard Abbey in Cullman, Alabama, the Ave Maria Grotto, also known as "Jerusalem in Miniature," offers a captivating and unique experience for visitors of all backgrounds [3, 6, 12, 16]. This four-acre park showcases the remarkable work of Brother Joseph Zoettl, a Benedictine monk who dedicated nearly 50 years to creating 125 miniature replicas of famous religious buildings, historical landmarks, and shrines from around the world [3, 6, 11, 12]. Brother Joseph, born in Bavaria in 1878, immigrated to America and joined St. Bernard Abbey [3, 6, 11]. Due to a physical disability, he was unable to become a priest and instead worked in the Abbey's powerhouse [5, 11]. In his spare time, starting around 1912, he began constructing miniature buildings using stone, concrete, and various donated materials such as broken plates, seashells, and costume jewelry [3, 5, 7]. His last miniature was completed in 1958 [3]. The Grotto features replicas of St. Peter's Basilica, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Tower of Babel, and the Alamo [6, 12, 16]. The centerpiece is the Ave Maria Grotto itself, a cave-like structure adorned with statues of the Virgin Mary and other religious figures [6, 11]. Brother Joseph drew inspiration from his extensive readings of the Bible and history, as well as his own imagination [3]. The Ave Maria Grotto was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1976 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1984 [5, 11]. Brother Joseph died in 1961 and is buried in the Abbey cemetery [3, 5]. Visitors can explore the Grotto via a two-block pathway that winds through the landscaped hillside [3].
